William Clay Ford believe it or not

If you are a long suffering Lions fan like me then you will not believe. Owner William Clay Ford claims he does not control who the Lions play on the field. The issue has come up, of course, because of the very very large contract of Matthew Stafford.
In the back of all of the mindless minds of the Detroit Lions fans are thoughts of Ford controlling everything from who they pick in the draft to what kind of hotdogs are sold in the stadium.

Will Matthew Stafford be told to start by Owner Mr. Ford?
Ford denies it and states it quite emphatically.
“I do not, contrary to public opinion, interfere with the football side of it,” Ford said. “I mean, if so-and-so plays lousy, I’ll say ‘I think he’s a bum.’ But, no, I’ve never said, ‘Play this guy or that guy’ or “Don’t play him.’ No, these guys know more about the game than I do by 10 miles. I’m not going to try to second-guess them. Now, if it goes wrong, we’ll talk about it.”

How bad are the Lions when they seem so poorly run that we can’t imagine the General Manager or coaches screwing up that bad? Ok, that is a lot of that bads, but you get the point.

Brandon Marshall will not be a Bear

This is a prediction and you can hold me to it, until it proves to be false, then you never heard it from me. Brandon Marshall wants out of Denver and will not end up a Bear.
Mostly Brandon will not go to Chicago because the Bears have nothing else to give up. Unless they just want to trade franchises or something and that would sort of defeat the purpose.
Jay Cutler would love to throw to Brandon Marshall as a Bear
The Bears gave up two first round picks to get Jay Cutler and would love to get top flight receiver Brandon Marshall.
“I talked to ‘B’ a few days ago,” Cutler told the (Newport News, Va.) Daily Press. “Just checking in on him and seeing how he’s doing, because I went through a similar thing that he’s going through.
“I played with Brandon for three years and I think he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL. I think he can be one of the greatest ever to play.”
Marshall indicated he wants the Broncos to trade him, although the team may not be willing to honor the request.

Jennings second highest paid receiver
June 25, 2009 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
How can this be happening and happening in Green Bay, where they are typically very sharp about their payouts to players?
Greg Jennings signed a contract that makes him the second highest paid receiver in the National Football League. He is second only to Larry Fitzgerald.

Hey, Greg Jennings, look at the ball!
You can almost hear the rush to the phones as quite a few NFL receivers are texting their agents to ask for a better deal.
They always think they’re underpaid, and they always wait for that one example – a player they think can’t compare to them on the field – to use as leverage.
Jennings will become that guy for wide receivers throughout the league. He will become the new guy to emulate when it comes to negotiations and contract demands.
Jennings, who is only 25 years old, had solid numbers in 2008 (80 receptions, 1,292 yards, nine TDs),

Ahh, the NFL money beat goes on. Remember when the Detroit Lions made Cory Redding the highest paid defensive lineman after one good year? Quite a few NFL players benefited from that and quite a few more will benefit from this signing.

Shawne Merriman number 12
June 24, 2009 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
This one is kind of funny and kind of sad. Mr. Steroid induced awesome built super qb rushing defensive Charger found a list of the league’s top linebackers and his name was on the list at number 12. Needless to say he freaked out and could not believe it.
Shawne has just spent 9 months recuperating from surgery and wants to prove he is number one in the linebacker business. There is no way there are 11 better linebackers and in Shawne’s eyes there can be zero better linebackers.

Shawne Merriman must prove he is number one linebacker in the NFL
Couple these feelings with the idea that this could be the year for the Chargers, and Shawne is very motivated. Oh, and did any mention that this is Merriman’s contract year come up?
But it’s hard to ignore all of it – particularly when the upcoming season represents a crossroads of sorts for Merriman.
Once considered one of the best players in football – not just defensive players, mind you, but in all the NFL – Merriman is perched on a potential career-changing season. He’s in a contract year with a franchise known for letting talent walk in free agency (see: Drew Brees(notes) and Michael Turner(notes)), and he’s returning to a defense that, in his absence, displayed the speed and agility of a cement mixer. With the major contract-extension hurdle of quarterback Philip Rivers(notes) still standing, and time running short for running back LaDainian Tomlinson(notes), Merriman’s here-and-now urgency isn’t being taken lightly – especially with an offense that looks Super Bowl-ready right now.

Roy Williams never touched the weights
June 23, 2009 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
How is it the Roy Williams can play for Texas and the Detroit Lions and never lift weights? Crimony, my wife lifts weights and she can catch a football. Lucky for Roy, she doesn’t try out for the Cowboys. This story just makes no sense at all. Aren’t these football teams?
“I’m serious,” King quoted the guy. “Roy never lifted before. Now that he has, and now that he’s serious about making himself a great football player, especially with T.O. gone, I think he’s really going to have a good year.”
Think about that. Williams played at Texas and for the Lions, and neither required him to do any weight training?
You know Roy has great hands and while with the Lions he was often their only hope, their only threat on the field, until Calvin Johnson came along, but no weight program? Man, if you are not happy that Marinelli is gone from the Lions after hearing that, then you are just plain crazy.
Roy must lift the plates!
Here is hoping that the new number one Dallas Cowboy receiver, Roy Williams, lifts some weights and has a great year!

Bernie is broke
June 22, 2009 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Bernie Kosar was one of the great all time NFL quarterbacks. Now he is broke.
Bernie came out of Miami and went to the Cleveland Browns. He threw for 124 touchdowns and was all pro in 1987.

Bernie Kosar will pass for money
Since then Bernie has had his share of problems. So after 23,000 yards passing, 3 pro teams, Miami, Cleveland, and Dallas, a failed marriage, and a lost chance at the Miami college coaching job, Bernie finds himself deep in debt.
Kosar’s Chapter 11 filing Friday lists assets between $1 million and $10 million and liabilities of between $10 million and $50 million.
Kosar owes almost $1.5 million in “unsecured debt” to the Cleveland Browns, who he played for from 1985 to 1993. Kosar also owes his ex-wife Babette $3 million and $725,000 (from a personal loan) to the owner of the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League. He owes a bank more than $9 million for bad real estate deals.
Man, it can be tough to get by on those millions.

Josh Freeman may start for Bucs
June 21, 2009 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Growing up, it was not uncommon for NFL quarterback wantabe’s to sit on the bench for 5 years learning their craft and honing their skills in preparation of becoming the starting quarterback. Boy, that was a long time ago.
Last year, Matt Ryan at Atlanta and Joe Flacco at Baltimore took teams into the playoffs. Yeah, yeah, they did not win, but then again, where would those teams have been without them? Home watching TV, that is where.

Josh Freeman may not be looking up the depth chart much longer
Now Josh Freeman, the brilliant rookie for the Tampa Bay Bucs, has a chance to take over the starting reigns at Tampa Bay a year sooner than was planned.
If the Bucs do accelerate Freeman’s ascent to the quarterback throne, it will almost certainly have as much to do with the play of the other contenders for that job as it does Freeman.
Neither Luke McCown nor Byron Leftwich performed exceptionally well during the recent minicamp, and it’s becoming apparent the Bucs have concerns about both.
They’re concerned about McCown’s lack of experience, of course, but even moreso they seem to be concerned about Leftwich’s lack of top-level athleticism and escapability

With all the money thrown at these rookie quarterbacks, it is hard to be patient.

Tom Brady making more beautiful babies

Tom Brady has it all and now he has even more of it all. Tom reportedly has another child on the way. This one by gorgeous model Gisele Bundchen. The baby is due sometime early next year.
Tom already has a son, Jack, by another gorgeous babe, Bridget Moynahan. Yes, apparently life is really tough when you are tall, good looking and throw tons of NFL touchdown passes.

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady
The rumor mill has the New England Patriots already finding a way to sign both children, just in case they can throw like daddy.
Late last month, the New England Patriots quarterback said Bundchen was not pregnant. “One is enough,” Brady said on May 28. “I have dogs, and that’s all I need.”
RadarOnline.com previously had reported that Bundchen was telling friends she’s pregnant.

Matt Millen clueless
June 18, 2009 by James Edwards
Filed under Detroit Lions, NFL Football
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
What is wrong with Matt Millen? Are we still trying to figure that out? Every year he was the General Manager of the Detroit Lions things just got worse until our season was basically over when the draft was over. The only thing to wait for was the following years high draft pick of a wide receiver.
Now Matt stands in denial that he had anything to do with it. To him the losing just happened at a time that he happened to be in charge. Matt will move on and make more millions broadcasting, but few, if any, Detroit fans will forgive him for what he did as he systematically destroyed the Lions franchise.
But for Millen to portray himself as a victim is downright offensive to the people of Detroit, Lions fans everywhere and those who cover the team. As a media member, he should know how criticism works. As a former player and executive, he should know how accountability works. He has criticized, hired and fired people himself.
Millen was not a convenient scapegoat. He was not a “cheap and easy story to jump on.” He was not blamed for the fall of the auto industry, the housing market and the Kilpatrick mayoral scandal. For Millen to rub salt in those wounds is inappropriate at best. Maybe Millen was trying to be funny. Doesn’t matter.
Even Sergeant Schultz, on Hogan’s Heroes, admitted to more problems than Matt Millen.

Brandon Marshall wants out of Denver
June 17, 2009 by James Edwards
Filed under Denver Broncos, NFL Football
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
This time we can’t blame Josh McDaniels for someone wanting to leave. Sure, Jay Cutler just wanted out of Denver and did not respond well to McDaniels, but now Brandon Marshall, the All Pro receiver, wants out of Denver and the sticking point appears to be money.
Marshall and his agent, Kennard McGuire, have taken the offensive. McGuire told Fox 31 News that “there was a request for a trade. Mr. Bowlen has said that ownership will do everything in its power to accommodate his wishes.”
However, there is no indication the Broncos will seek to deal Marshall, who is unhappy with his contract that will pay him $2.198 million this season, the final year of his deal.
Jay Cutler wanted out and now so does Brandon Marshall
How typical of pro sports and the selfishness of the athletes involved. They sign a contract and immediately if they do better, they want more. Just once it would be nice to see one of these athletes then turn around and have a bad season and offer the money back or ask for less. OK, maybe just feeling a little upset about this, but it just seems like a contract is not worth the digital paper it is created on.
