Eugene Monroe out of the top five

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Face it we love mock drafts even though they don’t mean anything, anything at all. They are just fun. We all feel compelled to put in our two cents. Come draft time, we are all experts, just like Mel Kiper. In fact, Mel just wants to be like us.

So one of the latest mock drafts has Eugene Monroe dropping out of the top five. Last week a prominent mock draft had the Lions taking Monroe number one. What happened? It seems that Eugene may have a knee injury that is causing him to drop down the draft board.

Well, the Lions are going this way…

1. Detroit Lions: QB Matthew Stafford, Georgia
The Lions have been trying to hold their cards and maintain their best poker face, but they are not fooling the rest of the league, who fully expect the rocket-armed junior to be the first quarterback drafted. Stafford’s impressive interviews and overall intelligence have not been lost on any team that has come into contact with him. He has handled all the pressure extremely well, being described by one team as “just one of the guys” with the even-keeled temperament to win over an offensive line and perform at a high level in the NFL.

Forget Monroe, Lions want Stafford

and Eugene Monroe is going that way…

8. Jacksonville Jaguars: OLT Eugene Monroe, Virginia
Tra Thomas may not be enough of a short-term solution to get the Jaguars through the season, as his performance gradually declined in Philadelphia last season, making Monroe’s availability in this spot a pleasant surprise. Despite desperately trying to trade down, GM Gene Smith may not be able to, or want to, if Monroe is available.

Are Sanchez and Stafford ready?

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
All the bad teams in the league seem to need a new quarterback, but if you want to draft your new quarterback with a high draft pick then you have to shell out a lot of money. Now a days, that means they had better be ready to play right away. The money matters.

Is Matt Stafford ready?

Is Matt Stafford ready?

Mel Kiper Jr. believes that Matt Stafford and Mark Sanchez are both quarterbacks that will do well in the NFL, but does he think they are ready?

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. raises all of the pertinent questions concerning Stafford and Sanchez. “How NFL-ready is he? How much time do we have to spend with him? Do we want to commit all these dollars?” Kiper wonders aloud. “They don’t treat quarterbacks like they did in the 1980s, where you have three to four years to develop them. They want them to play right away.

“In Matthew Stafford’s case, that’s not realistic. In Mark Sanchez’s case, it’s not realistic.”

The Detroit Lions are probably chasing Matt Stafford and the Seattle Seahawks will probably go for Mark Sanchez. It remains to be seen if Mel is right and they are not ready.

Where are the Lions believers?

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
For those of you that do not follow the Detroit Lions NFL team religiously and that is most of the world, you have to realize that the season for the Lions is fast approaching. The beginning of the season is during the morning of the draft and ends when the draft is over.

The exhibition season is a chance to see how bad all the newcomers are and the regular season is a chance to lose enough games to prepare for the real season, which is draft day, in case you forgot.

This year we plan on drafting Matt Stafford, because, well, because that would be the most fun for draft day. Even if a tackle would ultimately lead to more victories, it is more fun to think of Matt Stafford throwing game winning bombs to Calvin Johnson.

Calvin Johnson was a real victory in the real season of 2007

Calvin Johnson was a real victory in the real season of 2007

So when that regular season begins, how will the Lions perform? Will they lose enough games to do well in the real season (you know, draft day. Geez, how many reminders do you need?).

This schedule has 3-13 written all over it – and that’s only if divine intervention kisses the Lions,” writes Sharp. “There’s only one game in which the Lions should even be a slight favorite: at home against St. Louis on Nov. 1. They’re 0-6 before that game.”

You can read the rest of Drew’s article but I’m sending him a bill for ruining my cornflakes.

At least Nicholas J. Cotsonika, the Freep’s Lions beat writer, has broken the schedule down, game by game, this morning, although I’m not sure he’s expecting the Lions to do much better.

“At this point – the low point – the goal is modest,” writes Cotsonika. “It isn’t the Super Bowl. It isn’t the playoffs. It isn’t 8-8 or even something like 6-10. It’s a W.”

Well, from behind the security net of this Web site, I’m predicting an 8-8 year, with a chance of 9-7, and, oh yes, a 3-1 preseason record.

How do you like that, Drew?

Braylon to replace Plax

April 14, 2009 by James Edwards
Filed under New York Giants, Trades

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Tis a sad day for us Michigan State Spartans, as the New York Giants replace a Spartan alum with a Wolverine alum. Yeah, Braylon Edwards was from that school down the road called Michigan. Oh, and while he was at Michigan, he managed to thump my Spartans with regularity.

Braylon will have some pretty big shoes to fill, although the exact size of Plaxico Burress’s shoes are unknown at this time.

The Giants are in win right now mode and think Braylon is just the ticket.

Burress was a key contributor for the Giants however, and he caught the game-winning pass in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants won just one game after his suspension and lost in their first playoff game in January.

“The Giants are motivated, they’re trying to win right now,” Yahoo’s NFL insider told the site. “Edwards is a bigger guy that (Giants QB) Eli (Manning) wants to throw to, like he had with Plaxico. The Giants know they can’t leave Eli with no great receivers. They saw what happened last year.”

Harrison signed by Pittsburgh

April 13, 2009 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
No, not that Harrison, the other Harrison. The one that can still play big-time football. James Harrison, already of the Steelers, signed a long term contract to stay with the Steelers.

The Steelers have signed linebacker James Harrison to a new contract that will pay him $51.175 million over the next six years.

Harrison, the NFL’s 2008 defensive player of the year, will receive $20 million in bonus money.

James Harrison is a winner again

James Harrison is a winner again

The Steelers are loaded with great defenders, but keeping James Harrison was a high priority. Harrison has taken an odd route to stardom and it is quite a surprise that he has ended up with such an awesome career.

Harrison, who will turn 31 on May 4, has had quite a spike in his career since signing with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He was cut a few times by the Steelers, briefly signed by the Baltimore Ravens and spent time in NFL Europe before settling in with the Steelers, becoming a regular contributor toward the end of the 2004 season.

The North, home of the quarterback

April 12, 2009 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
What? The North Division the home of the quarterback. Isn’t this the division that had Kyle Orton, Dan Orlovsky, Tarvaris Jackson, and Aaron Rodgers? Not exactly the future Hall of Fame. But that is just winding the tape in reverse when we should be looking to the new season ahead.

Aaron Rodgers is not Brett Favre, but he turned out to be a pretty darn good quarterback for the Packers. The Detroit Lions seem to be on course to draft Matt Stafford giving the Lions a young strong armed quarterback for the future. Even Minnesota will go with the experienced Gus Frerotte.

Matt Stafford will bring his strong arm to the Lions

Matt Stafford will bring his strong arm to the Lions

The really big change will be in Chicago with the trade for Jay Cutler. Cutler will bring his All Pro talents to the field and immediately change the landscape of the North Division. Just see what Steve Wyche of NFL.com has to say:

I still believe that Detroit will select Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick.

The Lions, by adding Stafford, could give the once quarterback-drought-stricken NFC North a trio of young guns (Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, Cutler, Stafford) that could re-energize one of the more bland offensive divisions in the league.

Bears to the air

April 11, 2009 by James Edwards
Filed under Chicago Bears, Jay Cutler, Matt Forte

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Jay Cutler is now the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears and things will have to change. The new Chicago Bears will take to the air like never before. Look for the Bears to try and add a receiver or two to the roster before the start of the season. It will be the Air Bears.

Jay and Lovie will let the ball fly

Jay and Lovie will let the ball fly

Now don’t get too carried away, Lovie Smith still wants to run and with Matt Forte coming off a 1,200 yard plus season, who wouldn’t.

“In a perfect world, you want balance,” says Smith, whose offense still needs an upgrade at receiver to complement Cutler. “If there are 60 plays, you want to run it 30 times and throw it 30 times. But the games always dictate what you do. And there are always situations when the quarterback has to make the throws for you.”

Foster tells Stafford about Calvin Johnson

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
This has turned into a gossip column, instead of a sports report. You know, he said and then she said and then he said back. Well, this time it is more than gossip, it is just a feeling people have about Calvin Johnson.

George Foster, a tackle on the Detroit Lions, told Matt Stafford all about Calvin Johnson. Calvin is awesome. Those are the Squibster’s words not George’s. Calvin caught 78 balls for over 1,300 yards playing for the hapless Lions. They used about 5 different worthless quarterbacks.

Calvin soars to bring down a touchdown against the Bears

So will the Lions agree with George Foster? [Read more]

Roy Williams not impressing Troy Aikman

April 8, 2009 by James Edwards
Filed under Dallas Cowboys, Terrell Owens

Troy Aikman thought that getting rid of Terrell Owens was a good deal for the Cowboys. Now he is beginning to wonder about the Roy Williams deal.

Even Roy Williams wonders when you will see the real Roy

Even Roy Williams wonders when you will see the real Roy

How bad can my Lions be when their arguably second best player is traded to the Cowboys and can’t even get on the field? Ok, the answer is not a mystery. The Lions are pretty darn bad.

When asked to clarify his thoughts, the former Cowboys quarterback didn’t hold anything back.

“I just think that when you have the chance to evaluate a player to the degree the Cowboys were able to and then to give up what you gave up, if he’s not a No. 1 receiver and not a highly productive player for this team, that’s a huge flaw within their scouting department,” Aikman said.

…The Cowboys sent three 2009 draft picks — a first-, third- and sixth-rounder — to the Lions for Williams just before the trade deadline on Oct. 14. In a way, the trade also cost them Terrell Owens, whom Jones released after the season partly because of the investment in Williams.

Why Quinn may be a Bronco

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Can Denver live with Kyle Orton at quarterback? It is not that Orton does not win games, he does. It is not that Kyle is not talented in some ways, he is. It is just that, well, Orton just does not impress. Does that make sense?

USC used to chase Brady Quinn. Now the Broncos may be chasing him.

USC used to chase Brady Quinn. Now the Broncos may be chasing him.

Denver has to believe that there is a better option. Cleveland cannot continue with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn on the same team. Two starting quarterback salaries? Better to get a draft pick or player for one of them and move on.

Denver may want Mark Sanchez of USC. But can they get him?

Speculation in Denver and elsewhere is that the Broncos might use their two first-round draft picks — No. 12 and No. 18 — to move up high enough to select Mark Sanchez of Southern California. Seattle, sitting at No. 4, already is giving signals it suddenly loves Sanchez, perhaps to sway a deal with Denver.

source

A cheaper more believable option may be Brady Quinn.

So there’s Quinn, still not endorsed by the Browns as their starting quarterback as he enters his third season. And there’s McDaniels in Denver, filled with positive feedback about Quinn from Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis, whom McDaniels adores as an offensive football coach. If McDaniels can’t trust Weis, then who can he trust?

Trading the No. 18 pick to the Browns for Quinn (who was taken 22nd in 2007) makes so much sense for the Broncos, I can’t believe it hasn’t happened yet. They get a young quarterback schooled in McDaniels’ system whom the new coach can develop and appoint as the face of his team going forward. Denver also saves its No. 12 pick for much-needed defensive help.

Quinn or no Quinn, you have to think that Denver is not done.
