Clinton Portis goes off on Coach Zorn

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Clinton Portis

Clinton Portis

Clinton Portis is unhappy in Washington with the way things are going.

“Outside of Jim Zorn and the coaches on that team and maybe the quarterbacks, I guarantee you I know our system better than anybody else,” Portis said. “I guarantee you when we go into blitz pickup, I don’t miss my man. So I don’t know what it is. If anybody’s got a problem with me, they need to talk to me. I don’t know what’s going on.”

Portis was almost derisive when asked if teams have figured out how to defend Zorn’s offense after the team’s hot start.

“We got a genius for a head coach, I don’t know, so I’m sure he’s on top of things,” Portis said. “He’s got everything figured out. All I can do is when he calls the plays is to try and execute to the best of my ability.”

Should be fun to see how this works out. Will the new coach win or the star player?

Clinton Portis hit by killer whale, may not play against Ravens

December 2, 2008 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Clinton Portis just played against Pitt, Dallas, Seattle, and the Giants. With the exception of the Seahawks, Clinton Portis took a severe beating.

Now he has to face the Baltimore Ravens.

Clinton cannot even practice anymore his body is so beat up.

There is talk that the Redskins may hold him out of the Baltimore game.

And now the Killer Whale. What more can a NFL running back handle?

Portis is a perfect example of the violence of applied physics in action on a football field. In a fascinating small book called “The Physics of Football,” Timothy Gay conducts a series of basic equations to help us quantify how Newtonian laws work on the body of a running back. Example: Newton’s Second Law says that force is the product of an object’s mass and acceleration. Let’s say Portis sprints through a hole opened up by his offensive line, at a speed of 30 feet per second. Now Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce enters the picture. Pierce hits him; Portis’s speed immediately after the hit is zero. It takes two-tenths of a second to complete the tackle, from the initial contact of the pads to the moment when Portis’s forward motion is completely stopped.

Dividing Portis’s speed change by the time interval over which it occurred tells us what Portis’s rate of deceleration was — about 150 feet per second squared. Now multiply it by his mass, to find out how much force acted on him. Gay’s equation works out to negative 1,150 pounds of force. In other words, about three-fifths of a ton slammed him in the backward direction. As Gay points out, “That’s the weight of a small adult killer whale.”

Says Portis, “That makes sense to me.”

Ok, so it was a small adult killer whale.

Santana Moss made the Detroit Lions fuzzy

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Santana Moss proved to be too much for the Fuzzy Lions

Santana Moss scoring on Lions

Oh man, after umpteen years of sell outs, my sad sack Lions finally did not sell out and were blacked out.

Now my house is at the rim of the black out, but now a days, we are all at the mercy of cable or satellite and what they want to do. Just so happens my cable channel does not offer the correct channel to the west of me to get the game. So out came the rabbit ears and the Lions went fuzzy.

Maybe, just maybe, enough Lions fans will disconnect from the team to warrant new GM, coach, and even owner! We are already getting a new GM.

But a blackout becomes important because NFL play isn’t an obsession, it’s a habit. The league banks on fans needing that weekly fix.

This blackout is bad for the Lions because their fans could figure out that they can make it through a Sunday with no television contact with the team without the universe crashing around them.

This afternoon is basically Lions rehab. People will realize that if they can make it through one Lions-free Sunday without a cold sweat, they can make it through a second week, then a third, then a fourth.

Then you could have that emotional disconnect the Lions arrogantly think will never happen.

And that frightens even the mighty Fords.

source

At least my Lions stayed winless and still in the hunt for the number one pick and maybe a piece of history. No team has remained winless for the entire season.

Moss returned a punt 80 yards early in the fourth quarter, scoring what proved to be Washington’s game-winning touchdown in a 25-17 win over the Lions today.

Rams beat hot Skins and step backward

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
The St. Louis Rams beat the hottest team in football, the Washington Redskins 19 - 17.

Many Rams fans would love to see them lose to get rid of Jay Zygmunt the GM and to keep in the hunt for the top draft pick for next year. Believe me the Rams tried, even getting a 15 yard penalty before drilling a 49 yard kick for the winning field goal.

They fumbled at their own 4-yard line on their second play from scrimmage. They were going nowhere until a fluke turnover flipped the momentum. They blew a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter. They set themselves up for a gimme field goal to win the game, then committed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

source

The Redskins won the statistical battle.
Passing Yards:
Marc Bulger StL 136 yds 72 qb rating
Jason Campbell Was 208 yds 93.1 qb rating

Rushing Yards
Steven Jackson StL 79 yds 0 touchdowns
Clinton Portis Was 129 yds 2 touchdowns

Receiving Yards
Donnie Avery StL 73 yds
Antwaan Randle El Was 87 yds

So how bad are the Rams?

The Rams are really bad.

Between 1990 and 1998, the Rams lost 99 games, the worst in the NFL during that stretch. In the 1990s, this team lost 102 games, the second worst record behind the Cincinnati Bengals during that same stretch of time. In fact, the Rams were the worst franchise of the decade until the fourth game of the miracle ‘99 season when they won their first four games and the Bengals lost their first four. From 2002 through today, the Rams have lost another 59 games. So if you throw out the fluke three-year stretch from 1999 through 2001, the true personality of this organization is the other 16 seasons starting with 1990, which had only one winning season (12-4 in ‘03).

Since that last winning season, the Rams are a dismal 25-42, the fourth worst in pro football behind only Oakland (16-51), Detroit (21-46) and Cleveland (24-43).
source

Now that the Rams have fired Scott Linehan, what about GM Jay Zygmunt?

Beyond this move, sources close to the scene have indicated that president of football operations/general manager Jay Zygmunt, who numerous league observers believe is more to blame for the Rams’ embarrassing decline than Linehan, is expected to be out of the picture at season’s end due to serious health issues.
“Apparently a few people have been through here (interviewing for Zygmunt’s job),” one team insider told PFW.

Jason Campbell & Clinton Portis - Redskins beat Cowboys

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Jason Campbell came out on top against Dallas, even when sacked by Chris Canty of the Cowboys

Jason Campbell Washington Redskins sacked by Chris Canty Cowboys

All the questions were answered and all the answers said that Washington will be good this year. Jim Zorn, the new coach, is making a difference and Clinton Portis and Jason Campbell are making plays.

Washington 26 Dallas 24

Jason Campbell threw two touchdown passes and Clinton Portis ran for 121 yards, leading Washington to a 26-24 victory Sunday that gave the Dallas Cowboys their first loss and made the toughest division in the NFL even more interesting.

The Redskins came in with consecutive wins since a lousy performance in the opener, but there were still questions about how good they were. Going on the road to beat one of the most talented teams in football certainly improves their perception. For now, at least, Washington has turned the NFC East into a four-team race.

“It feels good watching our players take these strides,” Zorn said. “The football team believes in what we’re doing and that feels good.”

Cowboys cry

In the toughest division in the NFL, the Washington Redskins beat the Dallas Cowboys in a huge early season game.

The Washington Redskins just had it working and the Cowboys did not.

You just love to hear the whining from the so called America’s team. It seems everything just went wrong…

Like the Cowboys’ run defense allowing Clinton Portis to pick up 121 yards on 21 carries after stifling Cleveland, Philadelphia and Green Bay.

Like Tony Romo being pressured too often – although not sacked – despite the absence of the Redskins’ best pass rusher, Jason Taylor.

And like a 12-men-on-the-field penalty – after a Redskins timeout – that not only wiped out a potential third-down stop but allowed the Redskins to eat away more than three minutes before Shaun Suisham’s 29-yard field goal with 3:22 to play forced the Cowboys to try the aforementioned onside kick.

source

Jason Campbell

It was a great day for Jason Campbell and the fans let him know it. The much maligned quarterback is King in Washington right now. No bailout was needed while Jason was on the field.

As a large group of Redskins fans converged at the railing atop the tunnel at Texas Stadium, Campbell stopped to chat before joining Washington’s latest locker-room celebration, thanking them for their support throughout the biggest victory of his career. It appeared the appreciation was mutual.

The crowd continued to chant his name as he disappeared beneath them, a fitting ending for Campbell after his strong performance in the first half helped propel the Redskins to an impressive victory against their biggest NFC East rival in front of 63,462.

LaDainian Tomlinson - return of the rush monster

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

LaDainian Tomlinson leading the orchestra called the Chargers!

If you are into Fantasy Football then pay close attention. Mike Harmon of Fox Sports is going to let you in a little secret of his. Go with LT. You know, LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers.

What? You already knew that? How about some of Mike’s wisdom on the subject?

1. LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego
Tomlinson has ranked inside the top 10 in this category in each of his seven NFL seasons. He’s led the pack in three of the past four seasons (third in 2005), as he possesses an amazing ability to avoid lengthy injury issues despite a heavy weekly workload. The change in his blocking block might have some impact, but I believe it’s been a bit overblown. Now, I don’t expect Tomlinson to approach his ridiculous 2006 output (28 touchdowns), but he’s averaged 14.5 touchdowns per year in his six non-record breaking seasons. The No. 1 player on my board will light up the scoreboard frequently in 2008.
2007 Total: 15 touchdowns
Projected 2008 Total: 18 touchdowns

source

So who does Mike rate after LT?

2. Marion Barber III, Dallas
3. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota
4. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville
5. Joseph Addai, Indianapolis
5. Clinton Portis, Washington
5. Brandon Jacobs, New York Giants
Yes, that is 3 number 5’s.

Mike goes right on up to a number 13.

Controversy? No Stephen Jackson! Westbrook, a perennial favorite for fantasy owners, is way down the list. Ryan Grant in a tie at number 8?

Oh well, it is a start.

Rushing To Judgement

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

By Guest Blogger, Kori Ellis

If you are a running back in the NFL, chances are you’ve been injured at some point this season. Rare is the running back who has been healthy throughout the year.

Several top backs, including Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams and Sammy Morris, are out for the season due to injury. That said, even in this year of the injury, one running back is going to have to lead the league in rushing.

Here is a quick look at the five most likely players to do so:

1) Willie Parker, Pittsburgh Steelers
Parker has by far the most carries in the league this season and is currently second in the NFL in rushing yardage. The Steelers are a run first team and there’s a good chance that Parker will be able to run his way to a rushing title.

2) LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers
LT led the league in rushing last year and still has a pretty good chance of doing so this year. While he’s currently 7th in the league, LT is an extremely explosive back who could go on a tear down the stretch run of the season.

3) Joseph Addai, Indianapolis Colts
Addai is fourth in the league in rushing despite missing a game due to injury. He’s been banged up since the first contest of the year but still has had an outstanding season. If he can remain healthy, he could climb the charts.

4) Clinton Portis, Washington Redskins
Portis has been on fire lately (333 yards in his last two games), as he sits third in the league in rushing. Portis, who has battled injuries over the last couple seasons, has stayed relatively healthy this season.

5) Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings
Peterson, the rookie out of Oklahoma, currently leads the league in rushing. The problem is a torn tendon in his knee will keep him out for at least a couple weeks. That said, he’s had such a spectacular season that he could conceivably miss two or three games, come back and still end up leading the league in rushing yards.

Who do you think will lead the NFL in rushing yards this season? Leave your comments here and let us know!
