No football for Army grad Caleb Campbell
July 24, 2008 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Caleb Campbell believes in everything the flag stands for. So does the Squibster!
What the heck is going on?
The Detroit Lions drafted Caleb Campbell and he found a roster spot, but the Army took it away.
The U.S. Army revised its interpretation of U.S. Department of Defense policy two weeks ago regarding soldiers playing professional sports, requiring cadets to complete two years of active duty before applying for a release. Campbell and the Lions didn’t officially receive notice of the change until the eve of training camp.
“It’s unfortunate, but it doesn’t mean Caleb Campbell’s dream is dead. It just means it will be delayed,” Army spokeswoman Lt. Col. Anne Edgecomb told the Associated Press. “We want to take care of soldiers and dashing their hopes is not what we intend. But it is what it is.”
Sounds like someone got some bad press up high and decided to force the issue.
Argue with me if you want, but this just seemed like a win win to me. Caleb would eventually serve his time and in the mean time would be one heck of a recruiter, almost a super hero. Can you imagine a pro football player telling you the Army was a great choice in life?

San Francisco fined for calling Lance Briggs agent

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
The 49ers got a little too eager last year and paid for it.
The San Francisco 49ers forfeited their fifth-round pick in next month’s NFL draft after commissioner Roger Goodell said they tampered with Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs.
In a statement released by the league Monday, Goodell also said the teams will switch picks in the third round of the April 26-27 draft. Chicago, which had the 12th pick, will get San Francisco’s seventh pick and the 49ers will get Chicago’s choice.
Goodell said the 49ers violated the NFL’s anti-tampering policy by contacting Briggs’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about his client during the 2007 season.
The 49ers were a major disappointment last year as Alex Smith failed to develop at QB and the whole team just kind of went downhill.
Now they get a major slap in the face.

Matt Ryan, JaMarcus Russell, Calvin Johnson

And out of the mist came Calvin Johnson
Why do we all think that later on we know better?
Let us go on record here. Your intrepid author wanted Calvin Johnson last year. Still do.
My friend, RonB, actually beat the drum for Adrian Peterson. Did he know something the rest of us didn’t? Maybe. Ask him.
Of course, it is easy to look backwards and say you should have picked the Lottery numbers that won.
Oakland, in my estimation, would have done better to trade their pick away for multiple picks. They are just too weak at many positions. But Al Davis was set on JaMarcus Russell and all his gaudy tryout stats. In other words, he fits the mold of a possible great one. How many of us disagreed with Al? Is that a hand in the back of the room?
Now there are many that are seemingly all knowing and criticize last year’s picks.
Is everybody finally ready to concede what’s now painfully obvious? The Lions blew it when they drafted Calvin Johnson last year with the second overall pick instead of offensive tackle Joe Thomas or running back Adrian Peterson. The final piece of damning evidence against the decision is the team’s preparation for next month’s draft. source
Now you put me in the position of defending the General Manager of the Detroit Lions, Mr. His Name We do not Speak. Not being privy to what other teams were really offering for the pick, Calvin was the obvious choice. Obvious.
Joe Thomas was a left tackle. The Lions had one already.
Adrian Peterson had a history of injuries in college and Kevin Jones was due to return and Tatum Bell was under contract.
Calvin Johnson would fit Mike Martz offensive scheme.
But, more important, the Browns and Vikings are both on an upward trajectory, thanks largely to those selections.
The Lions are headed downward.
The underlying message is irrefutable. Wide receivers aren’t building blocks for success. They’re merely supportive components.
Hope Jerry Rice is not listening or Randy Moss or Terrell Owens.
Wait, did he say the Browns and Vikes are headed up?
The Vikes improved because of Read more

NFL Combine - fun with numbers

Did you check out Chris Johnson?
Chris who?
Chris Johnson from East Carolina in Conference USA.
Conference USA? Who cares?
Hey, they put out football players. Anyway Chris Johnson ran a 4.24.
A what? That is impossible.
Maybe not, because he did it and it is a whole tenth of a second faster than Darren McFadden ran. McFadden ran a 4.33.
Uhh, boss that is 9 tenths faster.
Got it, right, whatever. Still it is blazing fast.
Last year, Yamon Figurs, now a Raven, ran a 4.3 and that was the fastest time. That was enough to move him up to draft day one and into the NFL.
Check out some of this other stuff.
Vernon Gholston and Jake Long both benched 225 pounds 37 times. You ever try any exercise with any weight for 37 times? Go ahead and try it.
Quarterback Josh Johnson had the fastest 40, a 4.55 and the best vertical jump for the quarterbacks of 33.5 inches. Talk about an athlete. This is not your daddy’s quarterback anymore.
Anyway, not all of the positions have been tested, so the Squibster will be back with more.

Darren McFadden - speed forgives all
February 25, 2008 by James Edwards
Filed under Darren McFadden, NFL Draft
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
There are questions about Darren McFadden.
The question about his speed has been answered.
Darren ran a 4.33 40 at the NFL combine.
That is blazing!
He did not wear spikes and he did not appear to be stressed. McFadden looked like he could run 4.33’s all day.
Turns out, Darren had an injury in High School that prevented him from doing squats in college. At age 20, he will only get stronger, more powerful, and maybe faster!
The speed answer makes some of the other questions less important. That is the way it works.
That’s what a 4.33-second time in the 40-yard dash will do at the NFL scouting combine. It doesn’t just turn heads, it turns opinions. In short, the notion that McFadden’s two arrests for fighting and some other more minor issues will get in the way of him being one of the top picks may have disappeared as fast as he ran. source
Not to be cynical, but hey, sounds typical for pro sports, doesn’t it?
Your gallivanting author has discussed McFadden’s troubles before.
Now the jockeying will begin to get that top draft pick and go after Darren McFadden.
For McFadden, speed has forgiven all transgressions.

LaDainian Tomlinson - is age creeping up?

LT runs the football for the San Diego Chargers.
He is the supreme back. LaDainian makes the Chargers the tough team to beat.
On June 23rd, LT will be 29 years old.
The NFL works almost in dog years and 29 for a running back is getting up there.
The question for the NFL and Fantasy Football team owners is at what age will production begin to tail off?
Hey, 29 does not seem too old to me. Your intrepid author would love to be 29 again, but then if you add in 7 seasons of 300 plus carries and it gets a little more problematic.
It’s true, Tomlinson will be 29 at the start of the 2008 season. While his age won’t keep him from being one of the first three backs taken in all fantasy drafts, it could be enough to make some owners take Adrian Peterson ahead of him. Tomlinson has recorded 300-plus carries in all seven seasons at the NFL level, and the injured knee he sustained late the postseason could be an indication that the wear and tear could set in soon. However, his value won’t fall until at least 2009 drafts. source

Matt Ryan - learn about him

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Here is a video interview of Matt Ryan from the NFL combine by Rivals.com.
Matt says all the right things. He is not only quick on the field, but at the mike.
Don’t believe me? Check out what he said about the Atlanta Falcons drafting him.
“It’s a great city,” said Ryan, who was measured at 6 feet 4 7/8 and 228 pounds Friday. “(Falcons owner) Arthur Blank has done a great job, I think, in Atlanta. He’s made a strong commitment to the city, with everything that’s gone on the past year, and he’s done it with class. I have strong respect for that organization.” source
Yeah, right. Didn’t they cut the last quarterback, trade the one before that, and jail the one before that?
That is for sure where you want to play.
He had great things to say about the 1 - 15 Dolphins, too. Hey, he wanted to play for Bill Parcells, except Big Tuna will not be the coach, just the GM.
Actually Matt Ryan played my Michigan State Spartans and he showed a strong arm and an accurate short passing ability. Remind you of anyone with the initials Tom Brady?
Not saying he is, just that scouts notice those abilities.
“We sometimes called him the Tom Brady of college football,” Virginia Tech wide receiver Eddie Royal said. “In the fourth quarter you’d kind of feel comfortable, then he comes back and beats you in the last second.”
Oops, there goes that Tom Brady reference again.
Matt Ryan is poised to go at the top of the draft.

Darren McFadden could be a problem

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
No one questions the skills of Darren McFadden.
He has it all.
The speed, the burst, the size, it is all there.
There are some questions, however, on the other side of the ledger and those questions will be asked at the NFL scouting combine.
Just what sort of character does he have?
Now before you dismiss that and say “So what?”, consider that Darren may get a 20 million dollar plus contract.
Last year, JaMarcus Russell received a 29 million dollar contract. If you screw up on a draft pick for those kinds of guaranteed money, you will be hearing about it for a very long time.
So, just what did Darren do?
That includes at least two reported altercations – the first occurring at a nightclub in Little Rock in July 2006 believed to have resulted in surgery on his left big toe; the second allegedly following an argument at a piano bar in Little Rock early last month. source
