Steelers take on Obama

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Ben faded back into the pocket and Barack Obama rushed him from the right defensive end position.

Obama, referring to Pittsburgh as Six-Burgh in honor of the Steelers’ sixth Super bowl victory in February, conducted what he called the most unique visit by a championship team to the White House.

The Steelers players and coaches joined the President and others, including Pennsylvania Sens. Arlen Specter and Bob Casey, in assembling 3,000 USO care packages that will be sent to the troops overseas.

Obama also joked about being a Bears fan, and come to think of it, he is from Illinois.

Meanwhile in this wacky world we live in Big Ben had to deny having skin cancer.

Ben Roethlisberger does not have cancer, and neither does he have a Facebook page.

“There’s no truth to it. I don’t have any of that stuff,” the Steelers quarterback proclaimed yesterday.

“That stuff” are accounts on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and any other social networking Web sites. Roethlisberger said he does not use them, including the one under his name that proclaimed he had skin cancer.

“I had a bunch of people ask me about it. Obviously it’s not true,” Roethlisberger said after yesterday’s spring practice. “We had to go on our Web site to let them know I don’t have an account. There’s nothing going on.”

No Cancer for Big Ben Roethlisberger

No Cancer for Big Ben Roethlisberger

The Steelers have to be happy that there are no motorcycle accidents in Big Ben’s life right now and especially no cancer. Take it from a cancer survivor (me, the Squibster), you do not want to have any kind of cancer.

This is the kind of off season the Steelers hoped for.

Bears set to surprise the NFL

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
SI ranks the NFL teams going into next season. The team ranked number one is only a surprise in that they are not the Super Bowl Champion Steelers. No, it is the New England Patriots with Tom Brady back at quarterback and the knee behaving just fine.

The Steelers are ranked number two and the New York Giants are ranked number 3.

Now the big surprise is the Chicago Bears. The Bears, uhh, excuse me, Dah Bears, have always had a great defense with Brian Urlacher and the boys, but now they finally have a quarterback to go with them. Jay Cutler will make the difference and SI has ranked them number 4.

Jay Cutler will help the Bears to the North Division title

Jay Cutler will help the Bears to the North Division title

Just don’t tell Peyton Manning about this.

How good of a leader can Cutler be, coming in with the knock that he chafes on some teammates. It’ll be interesting to see if he meshes well with Brian Urlacher; I don’t take for granted that he will. Because of the Cutler factor and because I don’t love the defense the way I did two or three years ago, I didn’t want to leap the Bears over so many other teams. But then I went back and looked at their 2008 numbers. The bedrock stats for a good defense, I’ve always thought, are opponents yards per rush, turnovers forced and opponents’ yards per pass. The yards per rush, 3.4, was excellent, third-best in the league. Turnovers forced, 32, was very good, second in the league. And yards per pass play by foes, 6.20, was eighth in the league. All good. If Cutler can lead an offense that puts up 400 points, only a point and a fraction more than a year ago, the Bears should win 12.

Harrison signed by Pittsburgh

April 13, 2009 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
No, not that Harrison, the other Harrison. The one that can still play big-time football. James Harrison, already of the Steelers, signed a long term contract to stay with the Steelers.

The Steelers have signed linebacker James Harrison to a new contract that will pay him $51.175 million over the next six years.

Harrison, the NFL’s 2008 defensive player of the year, will receive $20 million in bonus money.

James Harrison is a winner again

James Harrison is a winner again

The Steelers are loaded with great defenders, but keeping James Harrison was a high priority. Harrison has taken an odd route to stardom and it is quite a surprise that he has ended up with such an awesome career.

Harrison, who will turn 31 on May 4, has had quite a spike in his career since signing with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He was cut a few times by the Steelers, briefly signed by the Baltimore Ravens and spent time in NFL Europe before settling in with the Steelers, becoming a regular contributor toward the end of the 2004 season.

Steelers go after Arizona again

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Will it be a replay of the Super Bowl? Probably not, the intensity would never be matched. It was, with a special emphasis on was, a pretty intense and exciting Super Bowl.

Cardinals or Terrell Owens?

Cardinals or Terrell Owens?

What we have here is a rematch of not immense proportions. Oddly this rematch will lack any intensity at all. After all, it will be exhibition season.

As enticing a matchup as that looks on paper, typically coaches play their first teams no longer than the first quarter of the first exhibition game.

The second exhibition game in Heinz Field against Buffalo holds more promise because it will be played at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29. Typically in that game, coaches play their first teams for nearly three quarters. That game will feature new Bills receiver Terrell Owens, who last visited Heinz Field Dec. 7 with the Cowboys, 20-13 losers to the Steelers.

source

As much as playing the Cardinals sounds like fun, you have to admit watching Terrell Owens go against the first team Steeler defense will be a whole lot more fun.

Steelers win Super Bowl as predicted!

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Let the record show that your humble author, the Squibster, predicted the final playoff victory games for the Cardinals and Steelers and the Super Bowl victory for the Steelers.

Let the record show that those predictions were in hard print before the games were played.

Why is the Squibster making such a big deal out of all this?

NFL Timeout for a Shout out: Just where is Nick Young?

The Squibster was 3 - 20 in predictions his first year of blogging and so pathetic in his second year until the playoffs where he shined, except for the final Giants victory.

This past year the Squibster shied away from predictions until the playoffs.

Let the record show that it would have been easy for the Squibster to predict 15 out of 16 Lions losses this year, but none of my predictions have involved bad teams. That would be too easy to build a track record not representing my true abilities.

What was the one game of the Lions that would have been wrong? Well, in the opener against Atlanta with a new quarterback from Boston College and a losing atmosphere for several years, who knew that they would be good?

Let the record show that the Squibster did incorrectly call the Super Bowl last summer having picked the New England Patriots prior to Tom Brady’s knee injury.

The previous year my pick was New England and they lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl. The year before that my pick was the Colts and they won it all.

Never at any time before the playoffs did the Squibster feel that the Pittsburgh Steelers would win it all.

Let the record show it still amazes me.

Steeler fans get Coke zero

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Here is a YouTube of the Coke Zero commercial shown during the Super Bowl.

Troy Polamalu does a nice job in this commercial and the Coke guys are fun as always, but the ripping off the guy’s shirt to imitate the ripping off of a jersey didn’t do it for me.

What do you think?

Big Ben to Holmes for Super Bowl victory

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Santonio Holmes hauls in the game winning pass

Santonio Holmes hauls in the game winning pass

This was an amazing Super Bowl game. It had everything that you would ever want to see in any football game, let alone a Super Bowl. Often Super Bowls are just not that good of a game, kind of an anti-climax to a long season, but this game was different and was filled with everything.

We had the longest play in Super Bowl history when James Harrison ran an interception back 100 yards to close the half or should we say when he lumbered 100 yards running over Cardinals all over the field.

Kurt Warner had a fantastic day passing with over 300 yards and 3 tds with the last one an incredible play to Larry Fitzgerald up the middle for 64 yards.

The Pittsburgh defense was steady as usual holding Arizona to 7 points until a fourth quarter explosion that led to 16 points and the lead. How did they get 16 points? 2 tds and a safety on a holding call when they had the Steelers pinned down on the 1 yards line.

But true to form, Big Ben Roethlisberger drove the Steelers down the field with a clutch pass to Santonio Holmes and then a fantastic pass to Holmes in the corner of the end zone.

The game was filled with penalties, challenges, replays, and clutch plays by both teams. The commercials were excellent and Faith Hill looked hot singing in the beginning of the game, and the Boss, Bruce Springsteen, was great getting the crowd going at halftime.

There were all kinds of movie previews, for Star Trek, Fast and the Furious, and Race to Witch Mountain; even Jason Statham driving a car in a commercial.

All in all, a wonderful Super Bowl.

NFL Playoffs Squibkick predictions

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Kurt Warner having a season of the ages

Kurt Warner having a season of the ages

Arizona Cardinals over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Philadelphia Eagles have the more complete team and a rejuvenated Donovan McNabb. The Cardinals have Larry Fitzgerald. Kurt Warner is having the season of the ages and at an old football age. Changed my mind on this game over and over.

Pittsburgh Steelers over the Baltimore Ravens.
The battle of two great defenses, but Pittsburgh has the more experienced quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, and more offensive weapons.

Sensible people do not bet money on Squibster’s predictions. Please be a sensible person and do not bet money on my predictions.
