Refrigerator Perry is getting better

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
You know my first instinct was to think of this as “another fat guy getting skinny”, but that is not what this is about. Refrigerator Perry played for the Chicago Bears and Mike Ditka and that famous 87 team. He was massive before everyone did massive. Sometimes they would move him to fullback on the goal line just to scare the linebackers. Most of the time he was a very good and very large defensive lineman.

Michael Dean "The Fridge" Perry was massive

Now Michael Dean Perry has Guillan-Barre syndrome and there is no cure. Guillaine-Barre uses your immune system to attack your peripheral nerves. Fridge has lost about 150 pounds and his brother recently looked in on him.

Now each day Michael Dean visits William at the North Carolina rehab center — sometimes to encourage him and sometimes to participate in his lengthy recovery.

“Baby steps I call them,” he said Wednesday, adding that William still was not up to granting interviews. “But we can see improvement.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, Guillain-Barre syndrome causes “…the loss of reflexes … and paralysis of respiratory muscles also can occur. A small proportion of patients die, and 20% of hospitalized patients can have prolonged disability.”

Perry is uniquely fitted into NFL lore and we all wish him the best on his recovery.

Brandon Marshall will not be a Bear

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
This is a prediction and you can hold me to it, until it proves to be false, then you never heard it from me. Brandon Marshall wants out of Denver and will not end up a Bear.

Mostly Brandon will not go to Chicago because the Bears have nothing else to give up. Unless they just want to trade franchises or something and that would sort of defeat the purpose.

Jay Cutler would love to throw to Brandon Marshall as a Bear

Jay Cutler would love to throw to Brandon Marshall as a Bear

The Bears gave up two first round picks to get Jay Cutler and would love to get top flight receiver Brandon Marshall.

“I talked to ‘B’ a few days ago,” Cutler told the (Newport News, Va.) Daily Press. “Just checking in on him and seeing how he’s doing, because I went through a similar thing that he’s going through.

“I played with Brandon for three years and I think he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL. I think he can be one of the greatest ever to play.”

Marshall indicated he wants the Broncos to trade him, although the team may not be willing to honor the request.

Kyle Orton in bizarro world

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Things just keep getting crazier for Jay Cutler. After being quietly, well maybe not real quietly, ushered out of Denver, he now finds himself in the unlikely position of having Kyle Orton post a better season.

Relax, relax, nobody is saying that Kyle Orton is as big of a talent as Jay Cutler. It is more what is surrounding each quarterback that makes an enormous difference. Jay Cutler just does not have the weapons around him in Chicago and Kyle Orton does in Denver.

Jay Cutler has the talent, but not the weapons

Jay Cutler has the talent, but not the weapons

The only reason we’re having this discussion is because…well, it’s a gimmick — ex-Bear versus current Bear — and Denver’s wide receivers are clearly better than Chicago’s. It’s not reasonable to prefer Orton based on anything else. But if you’re just looking at the receivers, then you’re not considering the entire passing game. Matt Forte had 63 catches last year while Greg Olsen(notes) and Desmond Clark(notes) combined for 95. And when Devin Hester(notes) possesses the football, he’s among the most dangerous men in the NFL. He’ll finally have a chance to work with an elite passer. Chicago massively upgraded its O-line, too.

Jay Cutler fires it in there

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
The IFO was at the OTA for Da Bears and that is all you need to know.

Huh?

The ball was humming with velocity not seen for some time in these parts.

Huh?

Oh yeah, the Identified Flying Object was the football coming fast at the receivers that were not used to it at the Organized Training Activity. Jay Cutler can wing it and he has the receivers excited.

“You just have to get used to catching a ball that comes that hard,” said Davis. “It comes fast; it’s on you real quick. You’ve got to get your head around. Once you get used to running routes with him and catching the ball from him, it gets a little bit easier. But he throws the ball pretty hard and the heat is still on the ball 20 yards down the field. It’s not like you’re [just] five yards away from him and it’s hot.”

Jay Cutler has a rocket

Now being a Lions fan it will be fun to see the Bears come into town firing the ball all over the place and the Lions with Culpepper or Stafford throwing deep balls. My gosh, these teams might even be entertaining!

Bears set to surprise the NFL

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
SI ranks the NFL teams going into next season. The team ranked number one is only a surprise in that they are not the Super Bowl Champion Steelers. No, it is the New England Patriots with Tom Brady back at quarterback and the knee behaving just fine.

The Steelers are ranked number two and the New York Giants are ranked number 3.

Now the big surprise is the Chicago Bears. The Bears, uhh, excuse me, Dah Bears, have always had a great defense with Brian Urlacher and the boys, but now they finally have a quarterback to go with them. Jay Cutler will make the difference and SI has ranked them number 4.

Jay Cutler will help the Bears to the North Division title

Jay Cutler will help the Bears to the North Division title

Just don’t tell Peyton Manning about this.

How good of a leader can Cutler be, coming in with the knock that he chafes on some teammates. It’ll be interesting to see if he meshes well with Brian Urlacher; I don’t take for granted that he will. Because of the Cutler factor and because I don’t love the defense the way I did two or three years ago, I didn’t want to leap the Bears over so many other teams. But then I went back and looked at their 2008 numbers. The bedrock stats for a good defense, I’ve always thought, are opponents yards per rush, turnovers forced and opponents’ yards per pass. The yards per rush, 3.4, was excellent, third-best in the league. Turnovers forced, 32, was very good, second in the league. And yards per pass play by foes, 6.20, was eighth in the league. All good. If Cutler can lead an offense that puts up 400 points, only a point and a fraction more than a year ago, the Bears should win 12.

Broncos draft a quarterback

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
How strange it will be for the Broncos with Kyle Orton at quarterback. It will take a while to wash away the stain of Jay Cutler. First they tried to get another quarterback from anyone and then they drafted a running back in Knowshon Moreno to help the running game.

Then with the first pick they took Tom Brandstater, a quarterback from Fresno State.

That would be the first pick of the 6th round.

Brandstater said he had some contact with the Broncos but didn’t necessarily expect to be picked by Denver.

“I thought I had a pretty good connection with them, but the draft is so hard to know, who’s interested and who’s not,” Brandstater said.

Brandstater thought all along that Denver would be among his favorites.

“The last two quarterbacks that Coach McDaniels has had were Tom Brady and Matt Cassel,” Brandstater said. “I think my measurables are similar to theirs.

source

Good luck on those measurables translating into being as good as Matt Cassel and we won’t even go to the Tom Brady thing.

Denver needs to move past Jay Cutler

Denver needs to move past Jay Cutler

The odd thing is that Kyle Orton won more games than Jay Cutler and here is where it gets tricky. In Chicago the defense won games and it was Kyle’s job not to lose them. In Denver, last year, the offense won games and the defense was pathetic.

Here is hoping that Denver improved their defense or all the fans will complain that Cutler is gone!

Bears to the air

April 11, 2009 by James Edwards
Filed under Chicago Bears, Jay Cutler, Matt Forte

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Jay Cutler is now the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears and things will have to change. The new Chicago Bears will take to the air like never before. Look for the Bears to try and add a receiver or two to the roster before the start of the season. It will be the Air Bears.

Jay and Lovie will let the ball fly

Jay and Lovie will let the ball fly

Now don’t get too carried away, Lovie Smith still wants to run and with Matt Forte coming off a 1,200 yard plus season, who wouldn’t.

“In a perfect world, you want balance,” says Smith, whose offense still needs an upgrade at receiver to complement Cutler. “If there are 60 plays, you want to run it 30 times and throw it 30 times. But the games always dictate what you do. And there are always situations when the quarterback has to make the throws for you.”

Jay Cutler Growls for the Bears

April 2, 2009 by James Edwards
Filed under Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Jay Cutler

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Oh hand me a beer quick or anything with a mug involved, because this Lions fan has to do some crying. Why did the Lions let Cutler go to the Bears? Instantly the Bears move to the top of the anemic North division of the NFL, which isn’t saying a whole lot, but is still light years ahead of the Lions.

Jay Cutler signing Bronco jerseys

The Bears gave up half of their franchise and then some, but Cutler will bring his passing prowess to Chicago and not Detroit.

The trade gives the Bears the franchise quarterback they have long lacked and instantly affects the balance of power in the division. But it came at an awfully stiff price.

The Bears gave up two first-round picks, a third-round pick and quarterback Kyle Orton, according to multiple reports. One of the first-round picks is in next year’s draft. The Broncos also gave up a fifth-round pick.

source

What this means is that the Lions had better nab a QB in the draft or they are sunk. Do you want to face the NFL with a used up slow Daunte Culpepper and have him get hurt leaving you with my main man from MSU, Drew Stanton? Uhh, no.

So please tell me that Matt Stafford graded off the scale and will be the Lions first pick in the draft.

Now where is that mug?

Matt Forte rules the Lions

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
As predicted by your intrepid author, Matt Forte rode all over my Lions. The Lions were pathetic and Matt Forte had a field day.

Matt had one touchdown on the ground and one through the air.

Chicago Bears 34 Detroit Lions 7

Matt Forte shown here stretching for a touchdown. He was a bit short before his knee hit the ground, but the refs figure the Bears will score on the next play anyway, so they gave him the touchdown

Matt Forte stretches for a Chicago Bears touchdown

Remember this was for your intrepid author to win the weekly Pay the Fan 10 grand.

Unfortunately my other players must have been standing around watching Matt run for two touchdowns, because they did nothing. No 10 grand for the Squibster, but then there is always next week.

Who would have thought that the hot quarterback would have been Kyle Orton?

The thousands of Bears fans at Ford Field on Sunday could relate as they watched little Kyle Orton playing in the Lions’ backyard. He’s still a kid, sure, but suddenly he didn’t look like one. For the first time in Orton’s career, he played like a big boy.

He threw for 334 yards, 104 more than his previous career high. He completed 70 percent of his passes and averaged 13.9 yards per completion. His 121.4 passer rating was the second-best in the NFL on Sunday afternoon. He did not throw an interception, and he did not fumble.

source

For my Lions, Jon Kitna was ineffective and left at halftime with back spasms or so they said. Orlovsky replaced him and continued the standard of less than mediocrity.

Roy Williams, the tall and talented Lions receiver, looked especially frustrated.

Must have been a special night for rookie running backs as Rookie running back Kevin Smith of the Lions had the only Detroit touchdown.

Bears Matt Forte is gunning for the Lions

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Your intrepid author is using Matt Forte for one of his running backs on his Pay the Fan Fantasy Football team.

Pay the Fan lets you pick a new team every week but you can only use a player twice all season. They pay 10,000 bucks if you beat everyone in a single week. Hard to beat that!

Since my Lions have not been able to stop the run all year and Matt Forte has been running hard it seemed like a good time to use him.

Wonder if there is any way Matt Forte can run for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns and my Lions could still win?

Wonder if there is any way my Lions could win, period.

Check out this YouTube of Matt Forte of the Chicago Bears.
