Roy Williams, Mike Williams, tired of the Shaun’s the Lions move to the William’s

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Roy Williams has big mitts

Roy WilliamsCan a week go by without your intrepid author going on a Lions rant? No it can not!

So let’s get right to it.

Shaun’s and Roger’s

Whether it is Charles Rogers, Shaun Rogers, Daryl Rogers, Shaun Cody or any combination of Rogers’ or Shauns’ it makes no difference. None of them are helping the team today.

The latest was Shaun Rogers, who while on suspension had minor knee surgery, only now the knee keeps swelling every time he tries to practice. He may be stamped IR and done for the year.

Move to the Williams

So in true revolving fashion the Lions move on to the Williams. Roy Williams is having a great year. He is already over a 1000 yards. His mouth is having a better year and is already over 2000 yards.

Oddly, Roy has very few touchdowns this year, only 4 of them. His mouth wants to score more, though.

Mike Williams? Will they just tell us the truth! He is big, fast, great hands, highly ranked, doing everything they ask and sitting the pine most of the time. What gives?

The Lions played Josh McCowen at wide receiver and he caught more balls last Sunday than Mike Williams. In case you don’t know, Josh is the backup quarterback.

NFL Football Rob Bironas factoid Rob kicked a 60 yard field goal for Tennessee to beat Indy 20 to 17. It was only the 6th kicker to kick on for 60 yards or longer. He is only in his second year. What do you do for an encore?

Jon Kitna and other QBs

Hey, big news, read all about it. Quarterback controversy. Jon Kitna is playing so bad that he will be replaced by…well, no one. How can they. The backup is playing receiver, remember. So Coach Rod Marinelli announces Jon is still his quarterback!

Actually Jon is having a great year considering nobody on the offensive line will be playing for the Lions next year. What??? Oh, sorry, your gallivanting author forgot he is not the general manager; instead they have someone with less experience at that position, Matt Millen. It least the Squibster has managed a Fantasy Football team to several victories.

And how bad must it hurt to see former Lions quarterbacks Joey Harrington, Charlie Batch, and Jeff Garcia doing well in backup roles turn starter.

Kevin Jones and Ernie Sims

Kevin Jones is back and in the Mike Martz offense is the featured player. Kevin has over 1000 combined yards on the season. So, of course, the talk goes to Mike Martz leaving to be a head coach somewhere.

Ernie Sims is one of the bright spots on Defense. Ernie has over 100 tackles plus assists on the year. Pretty impressive for a rookie.

Happy Pearl Harbor day! Happy Bday Grandma Katie!

Don’t forget to vote in the Matt Millen poll at the right sidebar.

NFL Football Fan Question Can Mike Williams catch a ball? Can Roy Williams close his mouth and stick to catching balls? Will the Lions win the Brady Quinn award for first pick?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

Saints over Ravens, or so the experts say

October 29, 2006 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

The Baltimore Ravens will be visiting the New Orleans Saints today for a big matchup in pro football. Peter Schmuck (yeah, that is his real name) of the Baltimore-Sun is predicting that the Ravens will pull off the victory. Is he biased? Probably. Is he correct? Probably.

New Orleans is at home and has had the great start to their season. Drew, Deuce, Reggie are all on a role, so what could be the problem?

The problem is the defense of the Ravens. In six games they have allowed 69 total points. New Orleans has not tested their new group of offensive players against such a defense. Your intrepid author predicts Baltimore by 6.

NFL Football Fan Question Does strong defense always dictate how games will go?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

Detroit Lions - Just when you think they got it, they don’t

September 13, 2006 by James Edwards

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Detroit fan like what they see
As Lions fans go, you can count the Squibster as a total devotee. So, Sunday’s loss to Seattle was actually pretty good. How can a loss be good? The team attitude was positive. Well, the Lions did a lot of good things in the game. They looked very aggressive. As fans, we were excited! We are not used to the Lions doing a lot of good things in a game.

Roy WilliamsUnfortunately, well ahead of schedule to be a great team, Roy Williams guaransheeds a victor-Roy. We all remember Rasheed Wallace and his guarantees to victory. Even then we cringed, but at least the Pistons were a great team. The Lions are not. It is good Roy Williams is enthusiastic, but maybe he can work on his timing a little.

Upon further questioning, Roy backed off a little, but you can bet the quote is hanging in the Bears locker room. Not good to rattle the cage of last years division winner with the best defense in football when you are going to play on their field and you could not even produce 1 lousy touchdown in your game.

My stance, and let us hope this does not happen, is that the Lions are learning to be tough and aggressive and to still execute properly and that may take time. That meant a little house cleaning, a la Charles Rogers, Artose Pinner, Joey Harrington, etc. That also means, and this is where Lions fans want me to be wrong, that the Lions are going to lose for a while. Look we saw the Chicago Bears go through this and come out a much better team.

Az-Zahir Hakim Det Free PressNFL Football Related Lions News The Lions resigned Az-Zahir Hakim to add some speed to the slot position. This could be a big uh oh for Furrey and Drummond. Hakim suffered injury after injury in his prior stint as a Lions receiver.

Coaches have the right stuff
We can tell that Donnie Henderson with the defense and Mike Martz with the offense will do just fine in the long run. We can tell the Rod Marinelli is exceeding all of our expectations, not something expected as he is a Matt Millen hire. In fact, check this article out on Rod Marinelli. It is just more positive than a Lions fan can handle. What we can’t tell is how long it will take for the Lions to gain the confidence that the can get it done. My guess is that it may take a while. In the Lions favor is a fairly weak schedule.

Of course it is never all roses in Lions land, but you would think that by now your intrepid author has worked off at least 250 years of bad Karma, wouldn’t ya?

NFL Football Fan Question Is the Squibster crazy to be excited about the Lions?

Jeremy Bloom

75686.jpgMy good friend Sasha observed that American Olympic skiier Jeremy Bloom is slated for the NFL draft this year. Of course, as an adopted-Aussie, she had no clue about Mr. Bloom but that’s okay… she kept us informed on the Commonwealth Games.

Personally, I don’t expect him to go before the 4th round myself. It takes a Deion Sanders or Bo Jackson to pull off dual-sports well when the NFL is one of the sports.

Draft Outlook: Titans Draft Young

April 19, 2006 by admin

I’ve been scouring blogs from NFL fans and have found quite a lot of diverse opinions and thoughts but very few have been as thoughtful or analytical as Jeff Fuqua for GoTitans.net who predicts Vince Young will be a Titan.

If the Titans are going to try and take the safest approach in drafting for a position known to be difficult to draft talent for to begin with, then all logic points to taking Matt Leinart. You have the results which show Leinart to be a proven leader. You have an established relationship with former USC offensive coordinator and current Titans OC Norm Chow. You have Leinart with experience in a pro-style offense and, specifically, one which would fit the Titans current offense nicely. All indications are that Leinart could contribute the soonest and is the ideal fit for the Titans on many levels.

<snip>

There is no doubt what Matt Leinart brings to the game. He has over 10,000 passing yards while at USC and just under 100 touchdown passes. He has a passer rating of nearly 160.0. The two National Championships and a Heisman Trophy speaks for itself. Few QBs have brought so many credentials to the draft.

<snip>

Despite over 3,000 yard passing, over 1,000 yards rushing, a passer rating of 164.0 and 38 touchdowns, and one of the most dominating performances in college football history when he lead the Longhorns to a National Championship victory over the Trojans, there remain doubts that Young can be successful in the NFL.

Many of the so-called “draft experts” bring up the same issues of Young as were mentioned of McNair leading to the ‘95 draft. They question his ability to read defenses. They wonder if he can take a snap from under center and play in a pro-style offense. They have no one to compare Young to which makes may take them out of their comfort zone.

<snip>

If available with the third pick of the 2006 NFL Draft, the Titans will take Vince Young.

I tend to disagree, but then again, there’s nothing that anyone can agree on in thins draft.

Chargers destroy Brees’ career, release him

February 21, 2006 by admin

NFL.com reports that the Chargers will let Drew Brees go in free agency. This move comes after the Chargers all but ruined his career in playing him against Denver in the final game of the season. He suffered a shoulder injury that makes all teams instantly wary of him.

It doesn’t mean no one will take him, they will, it just means he won’t do nearly as well until he proves he’s okay. I can easily see the Jets, the Bengals, and a bunch of other teams all taking a good look at him.

Greetings,

You have just stumbled upon (or been directed to) the SquibKick.com, the first of many excellent sports blogs yet to come from b5media. At squibkick.com we will be extensively (yes, even in the offseason) covering all things football. Whether or not I ever cover college football is up in the air, but with the draft just around the corner, you can bet I’ll be spending a lot of time talking abou it.

To get a better idea of what this blog is about and what it will be like, feel free to take a look at the categories (this blog has been posted under all the categories I will be using) as well as the twenty or so posts I have written so far.

I would also encourage you to take a look at the following pages:

Contact- This is the easiest way to get in touch with me. I read everything and respond to everything but spam, in which case I delete the message and blacklist you. Sorry.

Comment Policy- To ensure you

Links- My “blogroll”. Seeing as I already have the 80 or so b5 blogs linked to in my sidebar, having another 100 links could make things messy, ergo the seperate page. I don’t do link exchanges or any other such business, though I ask, nay, I beg that you send me links to good posts you have. My blog will thrive off of outside content, so you, the reader, must do your part.

Another thing:

The main site feed is here. Subscription buttons are on the top-right. If you want to subscribe to an individual category, the address is http://www.everyjoe.com/squibkick/thecategoryyoulike/feed. The feed for the comments is here.

Super Bowl XL- Why the Steelers will win

February 3, 2006 by admin

As the game draws closer, it’s time for people to start mailing in their predictions.

The SI writers already have, Gil Brandt has, and Cheeks has, and in his article Brandt mentioned that 4/5 former players who are now in the Hall of Fame all picked the Steelers, with the fifth not picking anyone.

All in all, about 80 percent of the people are picking the Steelers. Yet everyone is talking about how much respect the Seahawks deserve, and how the more they think about it, the more they like the Seahawks.

It almost reminds me of….last year. When the matchup was decided, everyone instantly said the Pats would run away with it. Then as time went on people started thinking the Eagles had a chance. And they did. But the Patriots were the better team, and everyone knew it. So a couple people picked the Eagles, and then we waited.

The problem with people picking the Eagles last year, and the Seahawks this year, is that everyone knew they weren’t as good as the other team. Everyone knows the Steelers are the better team this year, yet people spend their whole day trying to figure out how they can spin things to make the Seahawks look better. Instead of figuring out how to determine which team to raise above the other, they are using all their effort to convince us that they are even equal.

I think much like last year the team that was first favoured to win will win, though I don’t think it will be as close as last year.

People are talking constantly about two things:

  1. The Steelers can get beaten deep- Yes and no. Yes, normally they are vulnerable, but look at what they have done in the playoffs. They shut down Cincy, Indy, and Denver in consecutive weeks. Ike Taylor has succesfully shut down Chad Johnson, Marvin Harrison, and Rod Smith three weeks in a row. In case you’re counting, those are three Pro Bowl recievers.
  2. Shaun Alexander is amazing, he ran for 1800 yards, and almost thirty touchdowns- Yes he did. But people seem to forget that the Steelers have one of the best rush defenses in the NFL. They simply never give up 100 yard rushing games. They did against the Colts, but that was because they trailed the whole game, so the Colts were able to pound James. Look it up, no one rushes for 100 yards against the Steelers, so I don’t see why Shaun Alexander will be able to, as I don’t think he’ll be the best rusher they’ve faced all year.

Another thing to consider is the Steelers rushing game- It’s pretty darn good. And Seattle’s defensive line is overrated. And the Steelers offensive line is underrated. Simmons, Smith, Faneca, Hartings: They can all get it done. And with the game on artificial turf, I can see Willie Parker having a huge game.

But maybe that’s just me. We’ll have to see. This the NFL Championship, and anything can happen. Except it won’t.

Steelers 34
Seahawks 20
