Packers go for North Division title

Green Bay? Green Bay can win the Division? Come on. How can that be. Didn’t they have that quarterback that was always hurt, that Brett Favre wantabe?
No, Aaron Rodgers played every game, even though he was injured. The Packers are young and hungry with plenty of talent to go around.

Ryan Grant with his burst and speed will be key for the Packers
Most of all the Green Bay Packers live in a Division that is one giant unknown. Will the Bears get along with Jay Cutler and who does he throw to? Will the Lions have time to play after introducing themselves to each other? Will Brett Favre be the quarterback in Minnesota or will they have no quarterback in a Division filled with exciting quarterbacks?
Yes, Green Bay is ready and the team chemistry has never been better.
“But we love the guys we’ve got. We have the kind of team (Coach) Mike McCarthy is looking for. We are a team that is very united in the locker room, united in purpose and believes in the schemes on both sides of the ball.”
Universally, well, at least in Green Bay’s locker room, there is no mention of Favre unless it is brought up by someone else. For the most part, his expected return to the Vikings is referred to as the “situation” or “possibility” in Minnesota.
Worrying about what Favre plans to do pales to what the Packers plan to do to him. And Cutler. And Stafford or Daunte Culpepper in Detroit.
Green Bay is busy becoming the only team in the NFC North that will use a 3-4 defense — a defense that specializes in getting after the quarterback.
“With all the new quarterbacks around, I look at it as a chance to add some more names to (my) list,” said defensive end Cullen Jenkins, who missed most of last season with a torn pectoral injury but is expected to be medically cleared by the start of training camp.

Favre - Viking horns or not?

There are reports circulating out there from ESPN that the hunt for Brett Favre has been suspended.
According to Werder, the Vikings have at least temporarily suspended their pursuit of the for-now retired quarterback after he failed to report to the latest session of Organized Team Activities as Childress had mandated. Werder cited team and league sources in his story.

Now that would great, but there are reports out there that Brett Favre may not join the team until July 15th.
So which is it and why all the drama?
Brett Favre may be wearing the Viking horns soon
Brett Favre already holds almost all NFL Quarterback records and now has the record for most unretires and the most faked unretires. Let’s face it, he is the best unretirer ever to unretire in the NFL.
Brett to the Vikings? Well, the most telling evidence may come from his own family members. They booked a room for the Vikings/Packers game.
Favre’s family and friends have booked 25 to 30 rooms at the Midway Motor Lodge near Lambeau Field for the weekend of the Nov. 1 Vikings game at Green Bay, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
The quarterback’s family and friends often stayed at the hotel during Favre’s final years with the Packers, Midway manager Doug Warpinski told the newspaper. Warpinski declined comment to The Associated Press on Tuesday

Brett Favre and the stats may fall

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
This is not really about Brett Favre and only Brett Favre, not that Brett has not created a lot of news lately with the Viking rumors and Fran Tarkenton chiming in about Brett being the enemy as a former Packer, no, this is about records in the NFL and how the longer seasons are destroying records from a different era.
Football is loaded with stats and some stats come up all the time like rushing records or touchdown records, but in this day and age the records are falling simply from the longer seasons.
Dan Marino’s impressive single-season passing-yardage mark of 5,084 is poised to drop quickly, much like Joe Namath’s mark of 4,007 yards did shortly after the NFL went from 14 games to 16 in 1978. Now Namath’s record sits at 72nd overall, buried under an avalanche of passing numbers that have spun north like the wheels of a slot machine.
“In my mind, the numbers don’t really define the player as much as how you remember him in his era,” said Hall of Famer Dan Fouts, who was the first to break Namath’s mark. “Jim Brown was great. Johnny Unitas was great. And they’d be just as great today. For me, having broken records and then having them subsequently broken by other players, once you’re in the Hall of Fame, it doesn’t matter. I don’t even know where I stand anymore in some things because it doesn’t matter to me.”
Brett owns a great number of records just because he played so long. He still had to be great and consistent and Brett would still be considered great and consistent in any era of football.

Brett Favre in any era would have been great!
Actually, to me it is a sadder case in baseball where several records fell due to steroid usage and not something like season lengths. Roger Maris broke the home run record and had and * put beside his record, because Babe Ruth did it in a shorter season. How about two * beside the steroid home run records?
So far football has decided to let the records fall and this has seemed to work out just fine.

Just say No to Favre

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
With a name like a high priced perfume, you would think that bringing Brett Favre into Minnesota would not stink so much for the local fans, but you would be wrong. Maybe they don’t want Green Bay’s leftovers, who knows. There are a sizable number of fans wearing Vikings parkas that do not want Brett on the team.

Brett will soon have your teams jersey on, just wait.
Have they noticed that the Vikings do not have a quarterback? Maybe not or maybe they just don’t care.
If the Vikings want to sell tickets, they should sign Brett Favre. If they want ESPN to build a base camp in Eden Prairie, they should sign Brett Favre. If they want to coax John Madden (or is it Frank Caliendo, I can’t tell them apart anymore) out of retirement, and have him park his Winnebago at Winter Park, they should sign Brett Favre. If they want the Metrodome to become the petri dish in which the most interesting experiment in the NFL is conducted, they should sign Brett Favre.
One of the more interesting comments being made by Vikings fans is that Brett will not get the Vikings to the Super Bowl. Here is a newsflash for you, even without Brett, you are not going to the Super Bowl, so why not hook up with Brett and enjoy the ride?

Brett Favre talking and Vikes listening

You know the facts can get in the way, because they are only revealed at a later date long after the real event has happened. So let us get on with the rumor mill. Our favorite subject is Brett Favre, because his rumors just seem to come true over and over. Brett is like a Rocky movie. This would be Favre 18 or something like that.
Citing a source “with direct knowledge of discussions between the two parties,” ESPN reported the meeting will take place at an undisclosed location, with the understanding that Favre will decide soon after whether to play for Minnesota.
The Vikings would expect Favre to participate in offseason minicamps and training camp, the report said, which helps explain the accelerated timeline of this prospective marriage of longtime enemies.

Brett could be taking his wares to Minnesota
The best news of all for Brett if he decides to play for the Vikings is that his record against the Vikes is 17 - 14. That is not real Favre-like, but would be cured by not having to play against them. Of course, there is that little grudge against the Packers that would make for a couple of fun North division home and away games.

Vikings may want Brett Favre

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Oh, this would be so perfect. How could any fan of the North Division of the NFL ask for more? Brett Favre will soon get his release from the Jets and the rumor mill has Brett playing for the Vikings.
Now before we get into the perfect part, it is time for my rant about end of careers and baseball. Baseball? Yeah, baseball. You see, in my mind, as simple as it is, there is a great reason to have a designated hitter, no matter what Crash Davis says.
What do you believe in, then?
Crash Davis: Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

The reason we have a designated hitter is to see the stars past their prime still whack a baseball. It does not tarnish their career. Why do fans feel if a player is not great to the bitter end they have tarnished their careers? That is nonsense. Let them play until nobody wants them. They can still be fun to watch and Brett Favre is fun to watch.

Will Brett Favre fall all over himself to become a Viking?
Now the perfect part. Read more
Favre released by Jets from retirement

Could this be the year that Brett Favre does not play for your team? Could this fall begin with no gun slinging ex-packer, ex-jet throwing rockets all over the field? Can Brett Favre stand to be retired?
The Jets have released Brett Favre from the reserve retired list, which makes him a free agent. Could Brett come back for his 19th season?
Brett Favre is a free agent
Think of the teams that could use a 39 year old Brett Favre?
After 16 seasons with the Packers, Favre had a tearful retirement in March 2008, but decided to return to American football a few months later. Green Bay had already moved forward, anointing Aaron Rodgers the starter as a bitter falling out with Favre ensued.
The Packers traded him to the Jets, injecting excitement into a team that hasn’t been to a Super Bowl since 1969. Things started off promising as Favre played well and the Jets took over first place in the AFC East, with a playoff run in their sights. But Favre struggled with the arm injury as the Jets finished 1-4 and failed to make the playoffs, costing Coach Eric Mangini his job.
Favre announced his retirement on Feb. 11 — this time for real.
You have to ask yourself, what if Tom Brady is not really ready to play or Peyton Manning stubs his toe or something. Would Brett Favre want to play for a contender? My guess is that he would give it some strong consideration.

Brett Favre retires, sells me a bridge

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Hey, news: Brett Favre announces retirement.
Who is lying? Not me.
Brett told me and then sold me some land with a bridge on it. How cool is that? Have not seen it yet, but Brett said it was awesome and that he would never play in the NFL again!
“I have family and friends who say ‘All right Brett is this the real deal?’ ” Favre said in an evening conference call.
“It is. Believe me.”
The quarterback said injuries, especially a shoulder ailment, took their toll on him this season, and he was unwilling to have surgery that might allow him to play longer without pain.
“How (surgery) would affect my play at 39,” Favre said, “I have no idea. It was not something I was willing to risk.

Brett Favre drives away Cowher

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Rumor has Bill Cowher turning down the Jets job, because Brett Favre is the quarterback. Apparently Coach Cowher is adverse to a risk taking quarterback at the helm.
“There’s no way he’s taking Brett Favre as his quarterback,” the insider said of Cowher.
They never even got around to talking money.
Not to worry, the list of potential Jets coaches is 9 miles long.
Brian Schottenheimer
Bill Callahan
Marty Schottenheimer
Mike Shanahan
Steve Spagnuolo
Mike Holmgren
Jim Fassel
Bill Parcells
Santa Claus
Barney
And the list goes on.
The coaching carousel seems bigger than ever this year.

Matt Cassel returns

With the Patriots in a 3 way tie for first with the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins, who would have thought the Pats would be depending on Matt Cassel?
Cassel has steadily improved since taking over for Tom Brady in the season opener, passing for 3,052 yards and 14 touchdowns while ranking among the AFC leaders in most statistical passing categories. He played well last weekend against the Seahawks, rallying the Patriots from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter with a cool comfort that reminded many of Brady’s best work.
For that matter, who would have thought that Brett Favre would take the Jets to first place or that Miami would even be close to first place?
What a crazy division.
