Last year in the playoffs, Philip Rivers played even though he had a torn ACL. That move symbolized Rivers taking the next step. He’s now a rugged leader and with LaDainian Tomlinson slowing down, he could become the best player on the team sooner than later.

4. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
I guess the Packers were right. The management were all but pushing Brett Favre out the door — and now we see why. Aaron Rodgers can really play and he should continue to get better and better.

3. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Sure, he’s a choker in December. But when he’s on, Tony Romo is really on. He has a good arm and usually makes really good decisions … well, before the month of December. This season, he has a chance to prove he’s not a December choker but don’t hold your breath.

2. Kurt Warner, Arizona Cardinals
Old Man Warner can still play. Who knew? This guy looked washed up for about the last half decade. Now suddenly he’s reminding football fans why he’s a former MVP and Super Bowl champion.

1. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
Is there any quarterback you’d like leading your team? Sure, he can make bad decisions sometimes but Drew Brees has a huge heart and a knack to make the big play. He single-handedly has made the Saints a contender the last few seasons.

In watching the hall of fame game tonight, I got to watch football return. How happy was I? Well, not so much. See it’s not the games fault. I don’t blame the Indianapolis Colts or the Washington Redskins. They just wanted to play ball. It’s not their fault that Brett Favre is all anyone wants to talk about.

They showed his private jet landing and all the fans. They tried to get everyone’s opinion on him. They showed his wife in his suite during Green Bay’s scrimage and said that hey, he might be in that stadium somewhere. Brett Favre! Brett Favre! Brett Favre! Do they not know how annoying this is? But this is what they want. No matter if I like that he’s talked about every hour on the hour or that I loathe it, they want me to talk about. I’m buying into the system here. Maybe I shouldn’t write about out at all. But if I don’t I’ll go insane. Brett Favre will make me go nuts! So I have to get this out.

Dear Media: I DON’T CARE! I just don’t. There, I feel better. Now I move on. But how will Aaron Rodgers move on? He has to deal with this too. Now Brett Favre is invited back to compete for the starting QB position. Hey Aaron, just do one thing for me. Send Green Bay a letter that looks like this:

Dear Green Bay,

TRADE ME!

xoxo,

It’s not going unnoticed that Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers are creating a large drama in the state of Wisconsin. It’s no secret that Favre is not only the icon and hero of many “cheeseheads,” but also a living legend. The Packers are fine if Favre wants to come back, however, they would like him to come back as the number two quarterback.

Favre is seeking a release from the Packers in order to take his game to another team, where he can be the starting QB; not QB2 behind Aaron Rodgers. I doubt that Favre (or any Packer fan) expects Rodgers to complete the entire season as the starting QB, especially if Favre is on the roster.

Maybe the Packers were just calling Favre’s bluff. However, I can’t see #4 on the sideline as a backup. He’s got a couple more good seasons left in that gunslinging arm.

Usually, I use the Actual Meaning Translator to find out what athletes really mean. Today, things will be done a little differently. Instead of finding out what Brett Favre meant in his recent quotes, we’ll find out what the Green Bay Packers fans heard.

“It would be hard to pass up, I guess,” he told the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald. “But three months from now, say that presents itself, I may say, you know what, I’m so glad I made that decision. I’m feel very comfortable in what I’m doing and my decision.

“Yeah, I can probably be up there doing that and playing, but again, I don’t know. It’s only speculating. I think the world of that team. I had a lot of fun, not only this year, but over my career.”

But if Aaron Rodgers went down with an injury?

“Aaron has fallen into a great situation,” Favre said. “And if that opportunity presented itself and they did call, it would be tempting. And I very well could be enticed do it.”

This could be quite dangerous for Mr. Rodgers.

…translating…

…translating…

Destroy Aaron Rodgers.

(Note: this command may also come from local dogs.)
