Dario Franchitti, driver of the no. 40 Target car for Chip Ganassi Racing, returned to the track on Tuesday for the first time since incurring his ankle injury a month ago at Talladega. Dario was on-hand for NASCAR’s test session at Pocono Raceway in preparation for the upcoming Pocono 500 two weeks from now which the husband of movie star, Ashley Judd, plans to participate in.

Since the injury to Franchitti back on April 26th in the Nationwide’s Aaron’s 312, car owner, Chip Ganassi, has used an extended list of contacts to keep the seat of the no. 40 car filled for the interim. Ganassi turned to Penske Racing’s test driver, David Stremme, for the Cup race at Talladega, and then Ken Schrader for Richmond, and then most recently, former Ganassi driver, Sterling Marlin, at Darlington and last weekend at Lowe’s. The team failed to qualify for the Dan Lowry 400 in Richmond, and posted an average finish of just 31.0 in the other three events.

Though Franchitti is considering possibly competing in this weekend’s Nationwide race at Dover, the Heluva Good! 200, Ganassi plans to run Jeremy Mayfield in the car for Sunday’s Cup race. Mayfield has been out of a ride since his release from Haas CNC Racing earlier in the season, and many people feel that he has just about run out of anymore good potential opportunities for the future. After touring with the soldiers in Iraq for 12 days earlier in the month, Mayfield now must concentrate on putting together a solid run this weekend if he hopes to have a shot at landing a solid ride for 2009.

Stewart worked with his unofficial restrictor plate teammate, Dale Earnhardt Jr, throughout the race to keep their cars at the front of the field. With only five laps left, the caution flag waived for debris, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. The two drivers raced in line for the first lap, but Junior pulled out of line after that to try and slingshot past him. Unfortunately for Earnhardt Nation, though, Junior didn’t get the support behind him that he was hoping for, and Stewart cruised to the finish to pick up the win.

The next four cars in line behind Stewart all went onto pass Earnhardt, and surprisingly enough, none of them are Sprint Cup regulars. Stewart was followed to the line by David Stremme, Bobby Hamilton Jr, Jason Leffler, and Mark Green, all of whom recorded their best finishes of the season. Earnhardt eventually finished in sixth.

The race was plagued with 8 caution flags, one of which was a 12-car wreck set off by Kevin Lepage. Carl Edwards – who came into the race only nine points out of the series lead – was collected in the carnage, and the race was then red flagged for about 25 minutes. Clint Bowyer, the series points leader, finished 25th and Kyle Busch came home 18th.

The victory marked Stewart’s third win in the Nationwide Series in 2008 in only five races run, and it was the first in his career at Talladega in any of the series. He’s finished 2nd in the Sprint Cup Series on six occasions, and last year’s 2nd place run in the Nationwide Series was his previous best effort prior to this race. Before finishing 2nd last year, he had 4 consecutive DNF’s in the Nationwide Series. The win is also the sixth time a Joe Gibbs Racing car has won this year in the series, as well as their fourth in a row.

Stewart Tears Up ‘Dega

Santerre said to reporters, “Needless to say we are shocked and disappointed. We are being made an example … We admit there was a rules infraction, but it was a shock to us with as much as it was unintentional and unknown prior to post-race inspection.”

The team is obviously disappointed that they have been penalized with the loss of their race win on top of whatever other penalties NASCAR decides to hand to them, but to make matters worse, they deemed the car with a  30th place finish. The win was then awarded to Sellers’ teammate and original second-place finisher, Austin Dillon – grandson to Sprint Cup Series car owner, Richard Childress.

In Other News:
- Due to the Nationwide Series’ race in Talladega and the Craftsman Truck Series race in Kansas both being held on Saturday, Kyle Busch has conceded running the truck race this weekend. The series’ points leader will be replaced in the no. 51 Billy Ballew Motorsports truck by Shane Sieg. Shane has made 29 career starts in the truck series and has posted two top-ten finishes. One of those top-ten’s actually came behind the wheel of a Billy Ballew Motorsports truck last year at Loudon.

- Haas CNC Racing’s recent release of Jeremy Mayfield has left them scrambling for drivers week-to-week to fill the seat behind the wheel of their no. 70 Chevy Impala. The first week after firing Mayfield, they put Johnny Sauter in the car at Phoenix en route to a 37th place finish, and this weekend they’ll be hoping for better results with Ken Schrader at the helm. The team has recently locked on another driver for at least two of the season’s events with Max Papis scheduled to drive the car at both of the road course races in Watkins Glen and Infineon.
