To some people style and luxury is everything. Orbino has made a laptop case for the MacBook Pro that does exactly that. The Linea Slim laptop case is a hand crafted notebook case that oozes luxury. The finely crafted leather case encases your MacBook Pro yet allows for use while in the case. There are holes for the different ports, etc.
This baby costs half as much as the notebook it encloses. The $849 dollar pricetag is a hefty sum to most people but it’s chump change to those who the market it was intended for.

Several people I know contacted me recently. They were having problems with their Macs and asked for advice. One had a broken LCD and another was having trouble with her trackpad and keyboard. It would later be diagnosed as a logic board problem. These two people have one thing in common, their Macs could not be covered by warranty. The LCD problem was not a factory defect. The owner accidentally sat on his MacBook. The one with the logic board problem was out of the 1 year standard warranty period.

When this happens it really sucks. Most components of your portable are quite expensive if you but it from Apple. So it’s really not a joking matter.

First thing to do is bring it to an Apple Certified Service Provider. If you have an Apple Store near you then better, bring it there. Have your machine diagnosed, unless it’s glaringly obvious what the problem is. A cracked LCD is quite obvious. Still it would be good for you to bring it. Have the whole unit looked at and get a part estimate. This is good for several things. One you can gauge how much Apple will charge for it. If you can afford it and think it’s reasonable then that’s good. If not at least you know what part to look for.

You can check eBay for parts. A lot of people are selling spare parts via eBay. You might be able to get a good deal there. Mac User forums are also a good place to look. Sometimes people post parts for sale. It’s true in the Mac User Group I belong to.

Then there are the web sites that sell parts for your Macs. Sites such as All Mac and iFixit. These are good places to find spare parts for your Mac.

When all else fails or you’re just too lazy to have your Mac fixed, you can try to sell it for parts and go buy yourself a new one. This time remember not to let the warranty lapse and go get yourself the extended warranty.

I stumble across Tritton Technologies a couple of years ago when searching for easy multi-monitor solutions for my computer. About the time I discovered them I switched to Mac and none of their products were Mac compatible. Until Now.

From the Press Release:

VISTA, CALIF. – August 5, 2008 – TRITTON Technologies, a pioneering leader in USB external video card technology, today announced the launch of the SEE2 Xtreme. The long awaited Mac-compatible version delivers on the promise of providing an external USB 2.0 video card solution for Apple users. An ideal solution for multi-tasking, the SEE2 Xtreme enables users to connect multiple displays to their computer. The SEE2 Xtreme is now shipping for an MSRP of $119.99 through TRITTON’s network of online and retail partners.

The SEE2 Xtreme:

Supports up to 1920 x 1200 for DVI and VGA

Supports widescreen and rotated screen resolutions

Supports video playback

Features mirrored, primary, and extended viewing modes

Includes DVI to VGA adapter

Windows user will be able to connect up to six SEE2 Xtremes to one computer while Mac users will be “limited” to 4. Just think… this means for only $480 (plus monitors) Mac Mini users will be able to have 5 monitors. I know for me, the lack of multi-monitor support has been one of the factors that have kept me from seriously considering a Mac Mini so this is great.

I am looking forward to getting my hands on one of these and seeing just how well it works. If it does what I think it will do, this opens up a ton of possibilities with out the cost or complication of buying individual video cards for each of my computers.

What do you think? Anybody used one of Tritton’s products on a windows computer? I am hoping to get one for review soon and will let you know all about it.

[BTW... A quick search gave me an actual street price of between $85 and $95 USD]

Personally, a sleeve, is the way to go with a laptop. I have two different bags I carry regularly. One is a messenger, the other a backpack. Neither is a laptop bag, but with my sleeve, my ordinary bag becomes a laptop bag. I may have to keep these guys in mind for when I get my new computer.

Together with the Air Manila sleeve, I was also loaned a Radiator case for the MacBook by a friend of mine who just bought these two. I borrowed both cases from him to do a mini-review. The review of the Air Manila can be found here.
When I found out that I was going to have a chance to look at both products I must admit I was more excited to see the Radiator than the Air Manila. Did it live up to my expectations? Yes and no.
Yes because it looks as nice in person as it is in pictures. [...]
Post from: EveryJoe

Together with the Air Manila sleeve, I was also loaned a Radiator case for the MacBook by a friend of mine who just bought these two. I borrowed both cases from him to do a mini-review. The review of the Air Manila can be found here.

When I found out that I was going to have a chance to look at both products I must admit I was more excited to see the Radiator than the Air Manila. Did it live up to my expectations? Yes and no.

Yes because it looks as nice in person as it is in pictures. Like the Air Manila, the Radiator is also well made and uses high quality materials. It’s rugged and offers protection for your MacBook. Although I’m not convinced it’s padded enough. It kinda also reminds me of the Panasonic Toughbook with the way it looks. It just looks tough and rugged. It’s not as big as I thought it was going to be and that’s a plus.

Another thing I liked about it was the fact that you could strap it around your neck and actually use the computer standing up. That’s cool. I tried it but after awhile it does get heavy around the neck. Still, for people who are on the field a lot and need to bring their laptops this is a great feature.

The suction cups on the inside of the case secure the top lid of the MacBook in place. When you open up the case the MacBook’s lid sticks to the case making it easier to use coz the lid doesn’t fall back.

Here comes the no part… There are some things I don’t like about it. I’m uneasy about the fact that it opens from the bottom going to the top. This is fine when you place it on the table or horizontally. I know it’s designed this way so that you can open it up going away from you when you’re using it in the standing position. However it just makes me uneasy that the zipper might open suddenly and the MacBook might fall to the ground. I know there are ways you can zip it so that it lessens the risk but then again, I don’t want to always be thinking about that.

Another thing I don’t like about it is that it’s too small. It will fit the MacBook and remote.. That’s it. nothing else. No space for the power adaptor or other accessories. It was ok for the Air Manila because it’s just a sleeve. But the Radiator is a case.

Granted there are things I don’t like about it, overall it’s still a pretty decent case. It looks really well with the black MacBook. For $57, it’s reasonable.
