Android Netbooks

The Wall Street Journal  reported that Acer would be shipping netbooks loaded with Google’s open-source Android platform beginning the third quarter of this year. Acer is still continuing their Windows based netbooks but would add Android in the mix. Acer in previous months already announced their disbelief on the power of Android and they didn’t have any plans on selling netbooks loaded with Android.

According to Jim Wong, the head of IT products and business line of Acer, “For a netbook, you really need to be able to view a full web for the total internet experience, And Android is not that yet.”

There weren’t any major upgrade to Android and it seems Jim just spent more time on the software until he appreciated it’s features.

ACER Aspire One and the weird RAM thingees

Recently got hold of an ACER Aspire One, ACER’s landmark device that marks its entry into the ultraportable market. So there they are with the likes of HP and ASUS. One thing’s weird though. In the tech specs of the Aspire, it says that with the bundled 1GB of RAM composed of two sticks of RAM, one half is actually soldered into the device while the other 512MB is expandable. Now here’s the thing - the RAM is expandable to a MAXIMUM of 1GB which means that you have an odd assembly of 1.5GB of RAM for an ultraportable. Damnit! Why create expandability options that only allow for half a gigabyte?

ALSO …. there seem to NOT be any way to remove the RAM chip and tampering may actually - *we’re speculating* - void the warranty.
