YouTube has experienced a surge in branded advertisements as more and more advertisers opt to run their ads alongside related videos. Google credits this trend to YouTube’s growing prominence as a home page for consumers, its massive popularity, and its relevance to the younger generation, one of advertisement’s favored targets.

Analysts like Spencer Wang of CreditSuisse have predicted that YouTube would still cause losses for Google, Wang predicting that YouTube would incur $470 million worth of losses. Google has stated that it has fine tuned what kind of advertisements it would run and where on the website they would be most appropriate to run in order to get the best results, hopefully boosting YouTube’s profits.

Today, though, the online advertisement industry is expected to announce a set of reforms and guidelines for their practice of what some internet users have seen as invasions of privacy. Apparently, users will be able to decide to not participate in what is called behavioral advertising in order to have more control over their data.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau trade group is responsible for the new development, and they have worked with over 5,000 advertising companies as well as the largest search providers, such as Yahoo and Google, to enact the new policies. These groups got together in order to create seven main principles of privacy protection, of which consumer control is the focal point.
