There are thousands of mobile applications and more and more applications are sprouting everyday. Some applications are poorly developed while some applications are really good, and some that are very creative.

How about an application that gives directions? This should fall under “common”, “uncreative” applications in the market. But what if its an application built for night life? I think that changes things and we now have a creative application. This application called Wertago is a premiere mobile application that was built for people with a nightlife. Wertago provides up to the second information about hot venues, the ability to share content and influence the social scene, be able to coordinate plans with friends and connect with socialites across the city. The review, ratings, tags and reviews are all done in real-time and could help you maximize your night activities.

I can recall that everytime I go to the United States for a business trip, I have barely enough time to see and enjoy various places at night and I end up going to restaurants or bar within my sight. Applications like Wertago should ease up the research workload for people like me.

Other features of this applications are as follows:

1. You can see where and check out where your friends are

2. You can browse profiles, personalize your own and you can meet new people

3. You can send messages to people

4. Coordinate meetup is easy with its features

5. Be able to say hello to someone you want to meet

In summary this is a full blown social networking site that resides on your mobile and only target people who are going out at night. If you are the party goer and would like to make your nightlife less tedious on planning and coordination, Wertago is right for you.

The supported mobile devices includes Google phones, iPhones and other web-enabled smartphones.

As an added information about this product, Wertago is the grand prize winner for Google’s Android developer challenge.

You can view from information from the official Wertago site – Wertago.

Places Directory is an application built by a Google engineer based in Taipei who traveled frequently to Mountain View California to help in locating places in a small category. I could relate as every time I am in the United States I wish I could just quickly locate certain shops out of a mobile device instead of going through pages and pages of internet to get to where I need to. Anyways, the Google engineer and his colleagues decided to dedicate 20% of their time to build the application, “places directory”. Once they have completed the app they have uploaded and launched it on the Android market as a Google Labs product.

Places Directory allows you to browse nearby places in the following categories: Restaurants, Movie Theaters, Hotels and Banks. Alongside the listing of the places, you are also given the distance, and direction to the place by tapping on the list on a short-press. Ratings and photos are also included and you can also call the business via a long-press on the listing. The location provided can also be viewed through GoogleMaps. This app uses GPS or the nearest cell tower to provide you with these locations.

The Places Directory application is only available in US English and Chinese. Go ahead and download the application via the Android Market.

If you travel a lot or just need direction, this is a good tool be installed on your Android device.

Greed is good especially when it resides on your Android and has been updated to version 1.1.11. The greed I am talking about is the application for Android phones which reads through Google reader. The latest version is said to be better than the actual Google reader that is deployed online – Google Reader. The bigger feature of Greed is its ability to cache your feeds on the SD card that can be viewed at a later time. Simply put, Greed gives you the ability for offline Google reading. Aside from this, Greed also gives you the power to subscribe to podcasts feeds and download the files which you can view via your media player. Greed is really, really good.

The latest update was done on October 27 and has the following enhancements:

1. Click to toggle – The star, share, like, notify and cache attributes found on the “Feed and Article lists”, can be toggled on and off. This can be done by clicking on the individual icons under the items’ titles. Aside from directly clicking on individual items, you can also choose to do long-pressing an item and using the context menu for it.

2. Like/unlike support: The new Greed now supports the “like this” feature that is found on the web-based version of Google Reader. Whenever you’ve marked an article a little square smiley icon indicates is shown on the item.

3. Layout Changes: The major changes in the layout are under the hood which improves and lowers memory consumption. Also, the fonts are now compatible on WVGA resolutions.

4. Zoom Controls: The article viewer can now be zoomed via zoom controls.

5. Donut-specific Force-close issue: There was a previous issues on the Greed where it closes feed list of folder list, it is now fixed on this release.

Greed previously is very good, and now its even better. You can get greed via fognl.

I really hate calling customer service numbers and while most companies promise to have excellent customer service, an automated and well built customer computer system, most of them fall short of providing a quick and simple way of dialing in and getting what you want from the vendor. I don’t have a landline and am using a prepaid cell phone and what is annoying is to call a customer and listen through 3-5 minutes of crap. Some vendors even go out of their way and mention all sorts of promotions before you can actually go in and reach a customer service representative.

Next Mobile Web is a company that wants to change this experience and as such they have a product called Dial Zero which contains a database of various workarounds on hundreds of companies. Instead of listening to annoying recorded voice, the application helps you to cut through directly to the person.

Dial Zero contain over 600 companies on their database which allows you to click on the company, display its main phone number, description of how to reach an operator or agent directly, and comments from other people as well. These comments include tips on refunds, canceling of subscription, account verification, etc. Dial Zero would allow you to dial in and go directly to the operator or agent.

This application is available on three platforms namely iPhone, Android, Blackberry. Next Mobile Web would also be offering this application on your desktop soon.

Below is how the tool looks like in iPhone:

This is how it looks like in Blackberry:

Lastly, this is your Dial Zero desktop application:

I think this is a very cool and handy application to have that could help boost your productivity by getting what you want in a shorter time period. Also, the tips on getting refunds and other perks from other users can prove useful in this economic state we are in.

Go ahead and download your Dial Zero application here – Dial Zero from Next Mobile Web.

One of my colleagues told me almost 10 months back that Android is the future of mobile applications. I have never thought about Android and never realized it exists but I was still curious why he treated Android as the platform of the future.

As the months moved forward I began to see one device after another being created on the Android platform. Verizon one of the technology communications giant has began rolling out a product line of Android powered devices. Google Apps became more and more powerful and popular and its integration with Android boosts the future of the platform furthermore.

Today, Google apps and Android are becoming powerful tools for productivity that is seeing wider user base.

Verizon’s new strategy and new product called the HTC Droid Eris ensures progressive growth of the Android. The HTC Droid isn’t as powerful as most mobile devices but its specifications of Android 1.6, 528 MHz CPU is enough for most users. The price tag. $99 USD. That is right, this is probably one of the cheapest (if not the cheapest) Android device in the market which aims to bring the platform and the device to the masses. We can see massive adaptation of this device and platform in the coming months.

It is speculated that the HTC Droid Eris is not going to be launched on November 6 alongside Motorola Droid which is another cheap Android device, but you might consider waiting a little longer for this device. I am pretty sure the manufacturers are pushing to release this right away before vendors start pushing Android devices in that price range.

Do you want this Android phone? Are you happy with the $99 USD price tag?

Going back to what my colleague told me 10 months back, I strongly feel that Android based phones is going to make a good run and would probably be in the top tier in the years to come.

If you need a quick and small application for basic note taking tasks on your Android, the AK Notepad is for you. The latest version of the AK Notepad is 1.9.2 and was just released last October 24 of this year.

The AK Notepad is a basic memo pad which allows you to change interface color and text sizes. This application also has the ability to automatically convert email addresses and URLs into hyperlinks which you can use to write websites, portal links, or any online article you want to take notes on. The other features of the application include a simple “remind me” functionality for chosen notes, the ability to send notes via SMS, and to search notes via the title field.

As I said this is a basic application and one of the more important handicaps is the ability to synch up with your desktop. You would not be able to get these notes easily and would have to email them to yourself, download it, or export it on your SD cards. To get notes from your desktop to your PC, you would have to manually save the notes to your SD card and open it in AK notepad.

Currently you can download the app here — “AK Productions” but it would eventually be moved to Snaptic who have acquired the rights to the application.

While this application is not for someone who is looking for a powerful and feature rich software, this could still be a handy tool to have on your Android.

Computers are getting smaller and smaller and such is the success of smart phones especially the Nokia N-series. Consumers want to be able to do productive work in the palm of their hand anytime of the day.

Dell is one of the largest computer vendors in the world and everyone was speculating that they should release their own Smartphone. The hardware giant has kept silent all these time dismissing reports of an upcoming smartphone.

Just recently, Michael Dell, founder of Dell Computers has officially announced that they are releasing a smartphone sometime in 2010. Details have not yet been released whether it would be based on the Android operating system of Windows mobile. But given their relationship with Microsoft, I would expect a windows mobile based Dell smartphone.

CEO Michael Dell pointed out the importance of the smart phone in their company’s future as he says that “mobility” is the theme. He notes that mobility would have a big impact on their PC business and says consumers buy desktop for power and price but laptops are what people really want. He also took a stab at netbooks saying that the market share would level out at around 12 – 15 percent as users find it difficult to work on small keyboards and screens.

I think if users would still have problems with netbooks, they would rather have a mobile smartphone instead which they can carry everywhere. Anyways, Michael did not confirm if AT&T would be carrying their device but said that China Mobile will carry the launch device and would be the market’s entry point.

Dell is known for low priced high quality computers, and I hope they carry that philosophy over on their smartphones.

While the world continues to wait for Apple to announce its inevitable tablet device, its competitors keep jumping into the marketplace with Internet/media touchscreen tablets of their own. Archos is the latest to up the ante, with its new Archos 5 Internet Tablet, which runs on Google’s mobile operating system, Android.

The Archos 5 comes with a full list of features — WiFi, 3G bluetooth, built-in GPS, a multitude of media formats codecs — but the real story is Android. Because the device’s use of Google’s OS means that the Archos 5 will eventually have access to Android apps. The device currently has apps available in Archos’ proprietary “AppsLib” store, but analysts are speculating that the full library of Android apps will be available sometime early in the new year.

The Archos 5 has some of the best portable video options right out of the box I’ve ever seen. It runs HD widescreen video at 720p resolution on a 5″ touchscreen. It can output to your TV with an optional add-on accessory. It can even record live TV so you can take your shows with you.

The Archos 5 comes in two flavors: a flash memory model, and a hard drive model. The flash model comes in 16GB ($299) and 32GB ($379) versions. The hard drive model comes in 160GB ($329) and ($429) versions. And it’s available starting today.

According to Jim Wong, the head of IT products and business line of Acer, “For a netbook, you really need to be able to view a full web for the total internet experience, And Android is not that yet.”

There weren’t any major upgrade to Android and it seems Jim just spent more time on the software until he appreciated it’s features.

Samsung, top handset maker, has officially announced that they are launching three Android phone this year. Samsung should have built Android phones last year but noted that Google’s vision was a factor to the delay.

Google is known to court carriers to power their handset offering with Android, and despite the slow adoption, Samsung’s decision is one success at a time for the search giant. Verizon has earlier indicated that they are no longer exclusive to LiMo platform.
