WNBA Coach Of The Year Is Not A Surprise

I’ve been talking about the Atlanta Dream’s miraculous turnaround for the entire 2009 WNBA season. Talk about amazing? The Dream went from a horrible 4-30 record last season to a respectable 18-16 record season. They were second in the Eastern Conference and earn a well-deserved spot in the playoffs.
You can ask for much better coaching than that.
That is exactly why Marynell Meadors received the 2009 WNBA Coach of the Year Award. She already had a wealth of coaching experience under her belt (35 years worth) when she was named head coach of the Atlanta Dream for their inaugural season. One …read more
Atlanta Dream Trumped By Sesame Street

Despite the Atlanta Dream’s incredible turnaround this season, the team still can’t get any respect. Even though they made the playoffs, the Dream will be forced to play their first home playoff game in a different stadium because a live Sesame Street show has already been booked for the dates.
The Dream will host the Detroit Shock this Friday night at Gwinnett Arena, which is about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta.
Doesn’t this show how much the city is behind the team? I mean, they booked Sesame Street during the dates of the WNBA playoffs thinking that the Dream wouldn’t be participating. …read more
The Atlanta Dream’s “Dream” Season

I’m not one to toot my own horn or anything … but I will on occasion. When the 2009 WNBA season began, I said that the Atlanta Dream could have a break-out year. Well, guess what? The Dream took sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference this weekend when they defeated the Seattle Storm 88-79.
Most expansion teams take a few years to get themselves together. After last season’s laughable performance, the Dream looked as though they were going to follow the expansion blueprint. Then something shifted. Veteran players were traded and talented rookies joined the team. Now, the …read more
Atlanta Dream Could Be A Force In The WNBA

Last year, the Atlanta Dream didn’t do so well. This was to be expected from an expansion team, as the players learn how to play with one another and function together on the court.
But after obtaining a dismal 4-30 record (the worst in the WNBA’s 2008 season) the Dream made some impressive off-season moves and have positioned themselves to have a successful season.
With the number one pick in the draft, the Dream drafted Angel McCoughtry, the former Louisville star who proved to be both an offensive and defensive force throughout the NCAA tournament. In addition, the Dream also signed free …read more
The Atlanta Dream Sign Chamique Holdsclaw

In 2007, former Tennessee standout Chamique Holdsclaw retired from the WNBA.
Many people, including myself, were shocked by her abrupt departure. There were rumors that Holdsclaw was depressed and that she had lost her love for the game. Though she had played in the WNBA for seven seasons and averaged 17.7 points per game, Holdsclaw never seemed as comfortable or motivated in the WNBA as she did at Tennessee under Pat Summit’s guidance.
Sometimes it’s good to step away from things and situations in order to get a better perspective. Two years after her sudden retirement, Holdsclaw is returning to the WNBA …read more

The 2009 WNBA Draft was held the day after the women’s NCAA Tournament wrapped, and UCONN won yet another championship (sixth to be exact, therefore completing another undefeated season at 39-0, but really, who’s counting?).
Though Courtney Paris shed tears only a couple days earlier after failing to make it to the championship game, on Wednesday she was all smiles when she was drafted 7th by the Sacramento Monarchs.
The number one overall pick went to Angel McCoughtry, the former Louisville All-American who will now be part of the Atlanta Dream.
Here’s a recap of the Top 10 2009 WNBA Draft picks in …read more
