Now, I tried moving my Time Machine back up before from a 200GB hard drive to my 500GB and I thought it was just as simple as dragging the files and resuming it from the new drive. Boy, was I wrong. Lesson learned.

Luckily transferring your Time Machine backup to another drive isn’t such a pain. The easiest way I’ve found out how to do this is to make an exact clone of your backup drive onto the new one. It will be the same except it has more space. There are third party apps to help you do this but Disk Utility works fine too.

Here’s how I did it.

1. Open up Disk Utility
2. Select the Restore option
3. On the left side of the window you’ll see icons for the various drives you have mounted. It’s usually your internal drive, the old external drive and the new one.
4. Drag the old external drive to the source input in the window, drag the new drive to the destination window. Make sure you check the erase destination option. I had problems when that was unchecked. It didn’t want to push through.
5. Hit the Restore button and go find something else to do. This will take some time. Mine took several hours including the verification process.

There you go. You should have your old Time Machine backups on your new drive. You can resume your backups on the new one.

Moving Your Time Machine Backups

Clean: Using CCleaner, I clean the PCs including all the browser caches and various other application caches. (Read my introduction to CCleaner here.)

Disk Cleanup: I run disk cleanup ($ leanmgr) on all the drives.

Registry: I run a registry cleaner (these days CCleaner itself) to clean the registries, after taking a backup of the current registry set.

Virus Scan: I run an entire PC scan, not just the scan across the “commonly infected areas”.

Defragment: Using the disk defrgamenter ($ defrag –a <drive>), I first analyze all the drives and if necessary defragment the recommended ones.

Updatedb: I update the Cygwin file index.

Backup: I take a backup of all important data on my Transcend Extensible Hard disk. A good idea, don’t you think?

Meanwhile, Michael Howard, a principal security program manager at Microsoft, made a clean post about what they have learnt from the latest bug and why they couldn’t detect it in the first place. It is a very interesting read, especially if you can put aside your demands for infallibility of security engineers and appreciate the honesty.

Whenever a security threat becomes known, Microsoft gets a lot of attention that it would prefer not to. This is leading to the exodus of the Internet Explorer users to other browser options. Gregg Keizer of ComputerWorld covers a story that says that IE’s European share fell under 60% for the first time. A more interesting part of the story is that Firefox’s user share has stalled too, after the release of Google Chrome.

Brad Linder on Download Squad discovered a tool to backup the Internet Explorer Settings. Also in the post are links to tools that can backup Firefox profiles and Opera data.
