2009 Midseason Undefeated and Winless

We’re about at the mid-season point for college football. I always think it’s interesting to see which teams have gone undefeated so far and which teams have yet to win a game. By this time, most teams have had at least ONE tough opponent and at least ONE game where they had a chance to win. Here’s how the lists look this year:

Undefeated:

Alabama
Boise State
Cincinnati
Florida
Iowa
Kansas
South Florida
TCU
Texas

Winless

Ball State
Eastern Michigan
Florida Atlantic
Miami (OH)
New Mexico
Rice
Western Kentucky

Really, I think the big surprises here are that there are no major surprises. Few people would have put Iowa on the undefeated list when predicting records at this point in the season, considering that they played Penn State, but once again, the boys at Happy Valley choked.

I guess South Florida on the list is a little surprising too. They haven’t had a totally easy season. Cincinnati has (sorry, I know ya’ll love ‘em, but I’m not sure they aren’t totally overrated). Next week, they play one another, so that will end for one team.

I’m hoping that Cincinnati proves they deserve to be ranked so high, but I don’t think South Florida will just roll over.

As for the winless list…well…let’s just say that Michigan is happy to not be on it.

Another Michigan Player Leaves

When Llyod Carr got replaced as Michigan’s head coach by Rich Rodriguez, formerly of West Virginia, there was a mass exodus of players. Everyone thought that the school would go from having a traditional, family feel to being more sterile. And they were right, at least according to offensive lineman Kurt Wermers.

Wermers is the latest Michigan player to leave the school, saying that the whole dynamic between players and coaches is just different than it was under Carr.

“I really didn’t get along with the new coaches. They were bringing in a lot of different kids that were not my kind of crowd. Coach Carr’s staff was a whole different ballgame. It was like a family. But when Rodriguez came in it was a whole different feeling. It was more of a business. I figured I’d get out while I could.”

Wermers is heading to Ball State, where he thinks he’ll find the atmosphere that he really wants, both on and off the field. He’ll have to sit out a year, but he says that he isn’t “too bummed” about it, since he’ll get to be on the practice team and learn the system.

What the Hell, Ball State?

Ball State is one of 2008’s most controversial teams. Undefeated, they’re one of the few teams that doesn’t have a chance at a BCS bowl. What they did have an off-season chance to do was play another undefeated team, Boise State, who also also deserves a BSC bowl if you want to get technical.

Ball State said no. What the crap?

Ok, they give a list of excuses, some of which made sense. It’s Boise State’s home field, and it is almost 2000 miles from home, so they’re worried that fans won’t make the trip (which can get expensive for the school).

Wah, wah, wah.

A Boise State vs. Ball State game would have been awesome, maybe even the best bowl of the season.

I had one word for Ball State right now: Pussies.
