Hammer Throw Medalists Face Doping Investigation

The Russian News Agency, Allsport is reporting that the Silver and Bronze Medalists in the mens hammer throw event at the Beijing Games both tested positive for trace amounts of testosterone after the event on August 17 (2008). Vadim Devyatovskiy and Ivan Tsikhan, both from Belarus, will face the IOC disciplinary commission at the end of September.If found guilty, the pair would be disqualified and stripped of their Medals. They would be the seventh and eighth athletes disqualified for doping at the Beijing Games.

Bryan Clay Wins Gold in the Decathlon

Bryan Clay of the United States won the Olympic decathlon on Friday and earning him the title of the “World’s Greatest Athlete.” Clay is the first American to win the event since Dan O’Brien won the Gold in 1996.
Clay, the 2004 Silver Medalist, led the event from “wire to wire,” earning so many points that he only had to jog around the track for the 1500m, the last event.

Scenes from the Bird’s Nest – August 20

The Olympic track and field meet continued at the Bird’s Nest on Wednesday. In addition to Usain Bolt’s spectacular finish in the men’s 200m event, here is what happened:

Jamaica’s Melaine Walker won the Gold Medal in the women’s 400m hurdles event. Sheena Johnson of the United States took the Silver Medal and Tasha Danvers of Great Britain earned the Bronze.

New Zealand’s Vili Wins Women’s Shot Put Gold

Valerie Vili, the reigning world indoor and outdoor champion, won the Gold Medal in the women’s shot put event on Saturday, earning New Zealand its first Gold Medal in track and field since 1976. The Silver Medal went to Natallia Mikhnevich of Belarus and Nadzeya Ostapchuk, also of Belarus earned the Bronze Medal.

China, Thailand Earn Weightlifting Gold

Thailand’s Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon won the women’s 53kg weightlifting competition on Sunday. Her clean and jerk of 126kg set a new Olympic record. The Silver Medal went to Yoon Jinhee of South Korea and the Bronze was awarded to Natassia Novikava of Belarus. Melanie Roach of the United States finished sixth.
In the men’s 56kg weightlifting event, China’s Long Qingquan prevailed over Anh Tuan Hoang of Vietnam to earn another weightlifting Gold Medal for the Olympic host country. The Bronze medal went to Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia.
Fellow Chinese athlete, Chen Xiexia won the women’s 48kg competition on Saturday.
