Black Friday: best chance to go Blu-ray?

Until recently, Blu-ray players have been unaffordable by most middle-class and lower-class consumers. But we’ve seen them dropping to the $150-$200 range of late, and now that Black Friday ads are busting out all over, it looks like the day-after-Thanksgiving is going to be most consumers’ best opportunity to jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon, with prices dropping as low as $100 and even lower. Which ones offer the best value? These are my three picks, but read carefully…
Costco is offering Vizio’s VBR110 Blu-ray player for $99 on Black Friday. It’s important to note that the VBR110 is considered an “entry …read more

Black Friday hits early: $99 Blu-ray player

Best Buy is offering a Blu-ray player with streaming Netflix for just $99. The player is part of Best Buy’s own “Insignia” brand of electronic products, and it also includes BD-Live capabilities, which connect your player to the Net for added content that enhances your Blu-ray disc experience.

The Insignia NS-BRDVD3 Blu-ray Player outputs at 1080p and comes with a remote control and an A/V cable (HDMI cable sold separately). It plays BD-ROM discs, standard DVDs, and MP3 & WMA audio, and has a USB port built in.
Best Buy’s deal, which discounts the player down from a regular price of $149, …read more

Best Buy testing electric vehicle market

Best Buy, purveyor of all things electronics — and the store most wives know as the “man swallower” — is testing out sales of electrical vehicles in 21 West Coast stores, according to News.com. The product lineup includes bicycles, scooters, and Segway Personal Transporters. This month Best Buy is adding the Enertia electric motorcycle to its roster.
Best Buy execs are justifying the move via the “diversification for future growth” explanation that so often comes up in big business. But there’s no getting around the fact that electronic vehicles like the Segway or the Enertia are listed at prices significantly higher …read more

Toshiba Infinia – Gorgeous CRT Design

My first computer when I was a kid was a TRS-80. Cassette deck for saving my programs and everything! My first Windows machine was a Toshiba Infinia I purchased after college in ‘96 while living in Nashville. I believe the Infinia was the greatest computer design ever. At the time, it was the only tower and monitor combo that was black and not the ugly beige box.
I’ve still got the tower and the CRT. I just dumped off three other old CRT’s at Best Buy to take advantage of their recycling program. I just can’t ditch the Infinia monitor though. …read more

Old Computers on Earth Day

Happy Earth Day everyone! Today’s topic is what the heck do you do with all of that old PC equipment you’ve got laying around the house and aren’t using anymore? I’ve got old hard drives, 4-5 old CRT’s, a couple of towers and a boat load of cords, chargers and other devices just sitting around and taking up space. I know I don’t want to just toss it out, but what do you do with it?
A quick search and poll of twitter gave me some ideas on what could be done. First I found the eCycling website setup by the …read more

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) Kill Switch Experience

I just received this comment on the site from an old post I listed about the changes to the Windows Genuine Advantage program. This reader has had an exceptionally frustrating experience with the WGA kill switch. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

WGA kill switch is a racketeers’s dream.
I could care less if Msft takes this incident seriously or not, as a set of CA lawyers likely will in class action suits against Msft. But, FYI – this is being posted all over…
The WGA kill switch did kick in when I scheduled a chkdsk to run on next reboot. Msft …read more
