Latest Division I Polls For January 26

Ok Duke fans, you are finally where you belong – at number one!
You sat around, waited patiently and won all but one of your games. You did while pretenders like those other two schools in your state and Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh?) held the top ranking this season.
So here you are at the top of both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. And it’s the first time in three seasons you’ve held the top spot.
And to add insult to injury, you solidified the number one ranking by clobbering an Atlantic Coast Conference cream puff in Maryland by 41 points over the …read more

A Big Day For Some Big Games? Think Again!

I can never figure out just what the powers that be are thinking when they’re scheduling sporting events.
After 10 straight days of 80-plus degree weather things have returned to normal here in Southern California. We’re back in the 60’s with some rain. That just means that I’m not emailing Ryan Pravato on by Blackberry from the beach or my favorite coffeehouse wondering if he’s finished shoveling snow in Michigan.
That also means I have plenty of time to sit and watch some big time college basketball today (or at least until it’s time to take my son to a birthday party …read more

Latest Division II Poll

Showing that College Fast Break isn’t all about Division I with its Duke and UCLA and North Carolina, we cover other divisions too.
Both divisions II and III deserve some love here. We plan to bring you rankings and whatever news is going on whenever I can’t find anything to write about Tyler Hansbrough (or any player named Tyler), North Carolina or UCLA, or when Ryan Pravato can’t find anything on Mississippi Valley State, the Big 10 (plus one) or the Summit League.
So for your infotainment, here’s the latest Division II rankings released today by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

All SEC All The Time

Want to get your fix of Kentucky vs. Florida? How about Louisiana State vs. South Carolina or Arkansas vs. Mississippi State any time and all the time?
Not to worry. ESPN and CBS has you covered!
Last week both networks announced signings of insane deals to bring you the best in Southeastern Conference sports.
ESPN announced that it signed a 15-year deal worth more than $2 billion starting in the 2009-10 season and ending sometime near the end of the world. More than 5,500 SEC events will be carried during that time span.
For college basketball fans, than means three nights of SEC …read more

Billy Packer Will Not Be Missed

My reaction when I first that Billy Packer will be replaced by Clark Kellogg as CBS’ college basketball analyst was shock at first.
After all, Packer has been covering college basketball for CBS and NBC since 1975 and was on board for 34 consecutive Final Fours.
The 68-year-old Packer, who without a doubt was one of the smartest people to ever cover college basketball, he was opinionated and could break down a team or game like no one else in the business. Put him alongside with Dick Enberg, Jim Nance or the late Al McGuire and you were in for a great …read more

We’ll See How Long This Lasts

Bob McKillop was given a contract extension through the 2015-16 season at Davidson.
Many of you will remember Davidson as the little engine that could in last season’s NCAA tournament. The tiny Charlotte, North Carolina school had a run that caused basketball brackets to be torn and shredded at jobs all over the nation.
The Wildcats came within a three-point shot of reaching the Final Four in a 59-57 loss to eventual champion Kansas.
But if anyone thinks that McKillop is actually going to stay at Davidson through 2015-16 is sadly mistaken. Well, you’re nuts!
McKillop, who has a career record of 340-225 at …read more
