Windows 7 is the first operating system post-Gates and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is proud of their accomplishment. I would hold-off the big win party until Windows 7 has officially been released and sales to back it up.

According to Steve Ballmer at the McGraw-Hill 2009 Media Summit in New York: “We have a lot of people who are stepping up and growing in new ways. There’s no question about that. I’m growing in some new ways. Some of the senior technical guys are growing in new ways. It’s a great piece of work. And it’s a piece of work that was driven by a team … independent of Bill and his leadership. And I think we’re all, you know, feeling pretty good about it. We’ve got to finish it. But I think it’ll be a big, big deal.

He was the founder. I might have been the CEO, but he was ‘the Bill. There was no question that if Bill thought something should be done … he actually didn’t give orders much, but if he thought something should be done, you knew life would be intense if you didn’t agree. Let me say it that way.”

It seems that Microsoft leadership now has a bigger part on the vision of Microsoft compared to the “My Decision” approach of Bill Gates. Who would question the former Chairman, & Chief Software who has steered Microsoft to where they are now.

I think it’s fine that Bill Gates is away while the entire team is growing and it would be interesting if Bill decides to come back. It might even eclipse the return of Steve Jobs to Apple, currently toted as the greatest Executive comeback in history.
