Duke Fans and Bobby Knight Make the All-Ego Sports Team

A pretty funny column in today’s Los Angeles Times by Chris Erskine as he names his All-Ego Sports Team.
College basketball is represented by the Duke Student Section on the first team, and Bobby Knight on the second team.
Erskine said this about the Duke Student Section.
“Listen up, you little punks. Pride in your team is one thing. But you’ve helped turn college hoops into a rancorous R-rated spectacle, from which mothers shield their young ‘uns. I guess sportsmanship wasn’t an essay question on the SAT’s.”
And this about Bobby Knight.
“Humanitarian. Destined to be the first male cast member on “The View.”

Billy Packer Will Not Be Missed

My reaction when I first that Billy Packer will be replaced by Clark Kellogg as CBS’ college basketball analyst was shock at first.
After all, Packer has been covering college basketball for CBS and NBC since 1975 and was on board for 34 consecutive Final Fours.
The 68-year-old Packer, who without a doubt was one of the smartest people to ever cover college basketball, he was opinionated and could break down a team or game like no one else in the business. Put him alongside with Dick Enberg, Jim Nance or the late Al McGuire and you were in for a great …read more

National championship game – as it happens

As Kansas and Memphis square off for the National Championship, what better way to watch the game than to do a running commentary…
Before I start, I promised my pick, and that is Memphis. Even though Kansas looked incredible against North Carolina, I like how Memphis is rolling right now.
Of course, I’m forced to listen to Billy Packer and Jim Nantz once again – man, do I hate listening to both of them.
First Half
- Memphis darts out to a quick 9-3 lead after the first 4 minutes. Play is a bit helter-skelter right now, especially on Kansas’ part. Two early turnovers …read more

NCAA tournament brackets – my first impressions

As we gear up for the NCAA tournament, the bracket announcement show is always a great event.
As I watch the brackets roll out on ESPN, (I’d watch CBS but I cannot stand Billy Packer and Jim Nantz) here are my gut feelings and thoughts as the matchups are announced:
East Region
- If you look in the dictionary under “sacrificial lamb”, you’d find these two entries: Mount St. Marys and Coppin State. Have fun playing the Tar Heels boys.
- North Carolina/Kansas in one semi-final could be a doozy. UCLA and Memphis not so much.
- Notre Dame (#5) vs George Mason …read more

What’s lame about college basketball

A few days ago, I ran across a great article from our friends at Maxim entitled The Lamest Things in College Basketball.
The list was pretty good, and I wholeheartedly agreed with some of the entries.
For example, Duke basketball. I absolutely, unequivocally hate Duke basketball. Bobby Hurley. Christian Laettner. Cherokee Parks. Those freaking Cameron Crazies. You can stop jumping around now. Please stop jumping around.
Maxim also mentioned distracting opposing players while shooting free throws. Another very overrated part of the game. Do you actually think waving your arms back and forth during a shot will distract anybody? Please…
While their list was …read more
