Billy Wagner Traded to the Red Sox

Late last week, the Boston Red Sox claimed Billy Wagner off waivers. Today, the Red Sox and the New York Mets agreed on a trade that will send Wagner to Boston. In return, the Mets will receive two players to be named.
With the Red Sox, Wagner will likely become the team’s setup man in front of closer Jonathan Papelbon. Although Wagner has been one of the best closers in the history of baseball, he said that he’s willing to alter his role in hopes of winning a World Series championship.

Livan Hernandez Released by the Mets

Early in the season, Livan Hernandez was a bright spot for the New York Mets. However, the native of Cuba has struggled so mightily lately that the Mets decided to cut their ties and release the pitcher.
In May, Hernandez was 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA. In June, his ERA was 3.69. But the last two months have been a nightmare. In July, his ERA was 7.33. This month, he was 0-3 with an 11.30 ERA. Against the San Francisco Giants in his last start, Hernandez gave up six earned runs and 11 hits in 5.1 innings.

It was a collapse. A collapse that was only supposed to happen once. Only, it didn’t. It happened twice – and in back-to-back seasons. The New York Mets closed out the final season at Shea Stadium by blowing the lead in the National League East and falling in the final game ever at the stadium. But it wasn’t just a loss.
