Samsung has announced a new partnership with Blockbuster to bring its OnDemand streaming movie service to all 2009+ model Samsung Blu-ray players and HDTVs.
Samsung’s Plasma Series 650 and above HDTVs, LED Series 7000 and above HDTVs, and all 2009 model Blu-ray players will get a firmware update this fall that will allow users to search the entire OnDemand library, and then stream any movie directly onto their TV, with no other hardware required. (Sorry international movie buffs, but the Samsung/OnDemand deal is for U.S. residents only.) The firmware update will come as a free download.

I was pretty shocked when I read reports yesterday that movie rental giant, Blockbuster Inc., is at risk of shutting its doors if they can’t get their financial problems under control. The company, which is based out of Dallas, Texas has apparently been suffering since DVD-by-mail services like Netflix (I just wrote about one of their new offers!) have become more popular.

There’s a more complex, detailed explanation of what has gone wrong but I’d like to say that I’m really surprised. I’ve heard that with the stress of the economy, people were turning towards ways of relieving some of their tension and who doesn’t like to rent a good comedy when times are tough? I hope Blockbuster finds a way to stick around but I have noticed a real dip in their offerings lately, particularly video games.

What about you – do you rent movies from stores like Blockbuster, use services like Netflix or download through torrents? I won’t tell on you, I just want to know :)

And, as if that wasn’t enough Prince of Persia craziness for you, now, there’s talk of a movie.
Actually, “talk” makes it sound like it’s a rumor.
Nope. Not a rumor.
Jerry Bruckheimer is set to direct the movie that is still in preproduction.
Jordan Mechner, creator of the series, is cagey about a possible game tie-in with the movie. “Sorry, but I can’t answer that question!” screams “Hell, yeah there’s going to be a game” to me. How about you?

Even if the movie doesn’t follow the game, Bruckheimer is sure to make it a blockbuster and pull in butt loads of money for Ubisoft from the game tie-in.
