Happy Birthday Lifehacker

I am two days late, but never mind. Lifehacker, the fabulous site with everyday tips and downloads for getting things done, had its first post on 31st Jan 2005. What a phenomenal success it has achieved in these four years!

On this occasion, the super blog has two interesting posts: Our Best Posts From 2005 to 2009, and Weirdest and Most Controversial Posts.

Lifehacker Upgrade Your Life I am especially thankful to Gina Trapani, the blog’s founding editor, for introducing me to Cygwin and the todo.sh. She used to make frequent posts but has been writing only a weekly column on the blog these days. She released a book, Upgrade Your Life: The Lifehacker Guide to Working Smarter, Faster, Better, which consists of all the best hacks from Lifehacker.com’s archives, and her personal manifesto on working more efficiently in the digital age. Check out the official web site of Upgrade Your Life to browse the table of contents and download a sample chapter.

Happy birthday, Lifehacker! Many happy returns of the day. I am a regular visitor of Lifehacker, a big user of Cygwin, and I hope that the four-hour-long course that I did today on time management nudges me enough to become a daily user of todo.sh.

In this spirit, dear readers, here is the ultimate list of free Windows software from Microsoft. Enjoy.

How To Delete Posts From Windows Live Writer

While Windows Live Writer is a wonderful blogging software that lets bloggers work offline, it is poorly documented. Ironical. On top of it, the Windows Live Writer blog, much like other Windows blogs has no search feature to check for help.

When a blogger posts a blog through Windows Live Writer, it also maintains a copy of the post on the local machine. For regular bloggers, that adds up to a lot of space with time. A “proper delete” through the Open –> Delete makes it clear that deleting a post is equivalent to deleting it from the local machine as well as from the blog.

Some might like the backup, but we won’t mind an option to delete posts from the machine alone, do we? I am currently using a dirty trick to get it done.

All the posts you are working on using Windows Live Writer are stored as .WPOST files in the folder “My Documents\My Weblog Posts” under two sub-folders “Drafts” and “Recent Posts”. Delete the posts you want from them.

There is also a “cache.xml” file in the “Recent Posts” folder. This is the file responsible for keeping posts on the local machine in sync with those on your blogs. It is better left alone.

Please let me know if there is a cleaner way to do this. I am still a beginner user of Windows Live Writer.

Congratulate Milo on the occasion of Windows Vista Weblog finishing 6th in the Best Windows Vista Site competition.

The office has been a bit desolate for a while. So Colleen is taking over Office Tweaks. Join me in welcoming him.

Jason introduces us to the Super Bowl Single Girl. Pardon the dumb question, but why would anyone want to raise $3M and pay it to some television network? Aren’t Mr. Right’s for sale anymore? The big cynical question is: what if she realizes that she isn’t interested in Mr. Right? This comedienne is funny. So I wish her the best.

Claire wants you to take the Linux Graphics Survey 2008. What’s in it to you? Take these tips for Ubuntu users as a gift.

Jason has a tutorial to easily import table data into Excel from, say, a web page. Could use it some day, but I’m more interested in the reverse process.

How would you feel about a URL that is mysterious about what it can contain? I think it can be one of the types of spam. Jayvee thinks that stripping away those preconceptions can also be a refreshing browsing experience. A debate is slowly brewing up at his post. Come join us.

Juan is excited that Barack uses Mac. I’m more excited about this MacBook X-ray. What a geek!

That New Damn PC Guy

Hello everybody. I am Sravan, the new guy on That Damn PC. I love computers and make a living with them. I’ve learnt a lot about them over the last several years, especially about PCs, and I would like to share them here with you.

As someone with more hands-on experience with software than hardware, you may find me concentrating more on software, security, and general troubleshooting. That, however, doesn’t mean I won’t cover hardware at all.

I encourage you all to post any doubts you might have and I will try my best to get you an answer. I am not an expert in any of these, but there is a good chance I might know them. Even if I don’t, I have the interest and patience to dig deeper for an answer. We will see what can be done.

The regular readers may have gotten used to Kiven’s and later Jesse’s style. It will take a while for you all to get used to my style, and for me to get a grasp of their content in the archives. While I promise to try my best, you might find some posts overlapping with the older ones. Pardon such slips, but please point them out to me.

Lastly, remembering Studs Terkel, let us take it easy, but take it.
