I’ve been spending a little bit of time recently going through the thousands of bookmarks I’ve got saved in my local Firefox browser. I’ve been a happy user of the Google Toolbar for quite some time now and have relied on it for keeping most of my bookmarks.

I stayed away from del.icio.us for quite awhile, but have recently started using that as well to organize my websites. My thoughts behind using del.icio.us was to export all my existing bookmarks to it, but then also use it as a storage place for all the interesting websites I came across regularly.

I’ve got Firefox bookmarks, I run Internet Explorer because I have a number of clients that have their as their corporate default browser so I have IE favorites as well. Then there’s the Google toolbar bookmarks and my del.icio.us links going too. Although not quite a favorite or bookmark, I’ve also got all my RSS feeds stored in Bloglines. How do you keep everything organized?

There’s a challenge with me of trying to figure out how to effectively use everything as needed without duplicating effort or usefulness. I think the best way to move forward is to really look at each tool and determine how you want to use each one for yourself. As you’re using it, then remember how and when you’ve decided to use each one for it’s own specific task.

After working through a user account rebuild on my main operating machine in the past 24 hours, I’ve come to appreciate the fact that I haven’t relied upon locally stored “Favorites” for quite some time. I had been a very happy user of Yahoo!’s toolbard and bookmarks function until they upgraded their toolbar and broken most of the features I really liked.

So, I decided to ditch the Yahoo! toolbar for that component and hand one more thing over to Google, because I’m also very happy with their toolbar. Google’s presentation of my bookmarks is exactly what I had and miss from the newest version of the Yahoo Toolbar. In part of that migration, it appeared to be necessary to export everything from Yahoo! to IE’s favorites and then import IE’s favorites into the Google Bookmarks functionality. Everything worked like a charm, but it kind of surprised me that IE still relies on an HTML file to import the bookmarks. I’m really surprised it wasn’t an XML format at this point with IE7.

Another new use of IE7 that I haven’t really taken advantage of in the past is letting IE7 remember and store my logins and passwords for sites. How many other people let IE7 handle that aspect for them? I used to be concerned about my logins/passwords being stored anywhere other than the neurons in my brain remembering them. I’m just not sure if it’s really an issue anymore. What do you think?

Sure you can click “Sort by Name”, but sometimes you just want to wipe things clean at the lowest common denominator and this little tip from PC Magazine allows you to do just that.

I’ve come across another wish item for IE7 or browsers in general.
If I’ve added a website to my “Favorites”, why isn’t it automatically trusted? Maybe not even automatically, but when I add it maybe I’m prompted to also “Trust” this site. Why should i have to add sites to two separate places if I use them daily. Wouldn’t you think if I used something daily I’d trust it?
