After all, the lady is chairman and CEO of Carlson, which encompasses Radisson and Regent hotels and resorts, Park Plaza hotels, T.G.I. Friday’s restaurants, and a host of other household names. She’s also on the Boards of ExonMobile and the Mayo Clinic Foundation, among others.

In short, Nelson is a leader.

Although, according to the introduction, the book started out as a collection of memories for Carlson’s grandchildren, it has indeed turned into a guidebook for leaders that offers essential principles, encouragement, and inspiration. Each of the 60 anecdotes included in How We Lead Matters is just a page long, so this is the perfect pick-me-up to keep at your desk and peruse when you need a little boost. Opposite each of Nelson’s memories is a quote from a well-known, or perhaps not so, leader that dovetails with her message.

If you like to read about the experiences and advice of successful businesswomen, and appreciate simple wisdom, you’ll love How We Lead Matters. It’s available to order through Amazon, B&N, and Borders, and every linked title in this post will take you straight to Amazon.com so you can order your own copy of How We Lead Matters.

As a special gift, Marilyn Carson Nelson is offering a bonus for folks who order the book by September 26: two free e-books!

Harvey Mackay’s Rolodex Guide – A wonderful resource for businesspeople interested in the art of networking from the author of the classic NY Times bestseller Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive: Outsell, Outmanage, Outmotivate, and Outnegotiate Your Competition.

How We Lead Matters: In Pictures — This unique online version of the book contains images by well-known NYC photographer, David Finn, that add a special inspirational dimension to select stories from the book.

All you have to do to get the freebies is order How We Lead Matters and then go here and enter your name, e-mail address, and order number in the little form on the righthand side. Tada!

I really liked How We Lead Matters. What did you think? Leave a comment!

Plus, Kristen’s going to be giving away copies of her new book to BCR readers. Here’s some info about it, and her, from a recent press release about an upcoming book signing she’s hosting in Point Pleasant, NJ, this June for those of a northern persuasion:

PT. PLEASANT, NEW JERSEY (April 30, 2008) – Jersey Shore native Kristen Fischer will be holding a book signing for her newest release, Ramen Noodles, Rent and Resumes: An After-College Guide to Life. The event will take place at Borders in Eatontown, NJ, on Wednesday June 11 at 7 p.m.

In Ramen Noodles, Rent and Resumes: An After-College Guide to Life, author Kristen Fischer encourages grads to embrace–instead of dread–life after college. Instead of the "quarterlife crisis", she introduces the concept of "The After-College" in which graduates learn to thrive during their 20s. Highlighting dozens of real-life graduates who have navigated their way through this challenging but exciting phase of life, Ramen Noodles, Rent and Resumes: An After-College Guide to Life is packed with valuable strategies for career advancement and personal growth.

The book helps recent graduates:

Determine what career path will bring satisfaction

Select a job hunting strategy that gets results

Decide if graduate school will benefit their career

Prioritize work responsibilities with personal commitments

Cultivate better relationships with family and friends

Organize a living plan-at home or on their own

Manage their finances with the future in mind

Overcome stress, anxiety or depression

"I look forward to meeting soon-to-be graduates and recent graduates-as well as their families," says Fischer, who resides in Pt. Pleasant, NJ. "Just by being aware of how hard life after college can be, it can be a great time for 20-somethings."

So the article is featured on the cover in like 72-point type. The thing is, some of the articles are flat-out fantastic. They really, really are. But others, like the cover story in the current issue, are just uber-sketch.

So the article is featured on the cover in like 72-point type. (I didn’t bust out my typesetter’s ruler and measure it, but suffice it to say, it’s giant lettering.) “RAISE $25,000 IN START-UP FUNDING IN 5 DAYS!” Well, golly. That’s a awful lot of gosh-darned money! I do declare, I cannot believe it is possible! Let us find out how.

Okay, well, first you need a business plan. Gee, that makes sense. You should also talk to the bank. Sure! Good idea. But this one really threw me for a loop, and it was a bloody pull quote: “Don’t forget eBay as a way to get some cash.”

You’re kidding, right? Bye-bye, credibility!

Like seriously, some of this stuff is utter crap, but I keep my subscription because some articles, like “Start-Up Success Tips for a Recession,” are actually quite useful, but I see it as applying more to an established business than a start-up. BUT, oddly enough, the author of that article also has a letter to the editor in the same issue.

And speaking of letters to the editor, there are only two that are legitimately letters to the editor. The rest are nonsensical marketing blurbs. I think. I’m not even sure exactly what their respective points are, to be honest.

Like I said in the post title, mixed review. My recommendation would be to hit your local borders and peruse a few issues with notebook in hand before deciding whether to subscribe. That way, you’ll be going in with eyes wide open.

A report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has found that there is (gasp) waste in government spending. Over a fifteen month period from 2005 to 2006, the GAO found that nearly 41% of credit card purchases – in the amount of $14 billion – were not billed out according to procedure. For purchases over $2,500, 48% were either not authorized or the items were improperly received. Read more >>>

You’re at work. Behave like an adult.

Now, I’m not suggesting that work shouldn’t be fun, or that it can’t be funny. Opening all of the drawers and cabinets in the community kitchen and hanging up a sign that says "I see dead people"? Okay, still not really appropriate for the office, but yes, that’s funny, and something that doesn’t cause a ruckus, like faking an emergency, or hurt anyone. But pulling someone aside and telling them you hear they were getting fired? That is not funny. Neither is alluding to downsizing, shutting down operations, or anything else that will terrify people. Nor is getting people’s hopes up only to dash them. And it’s never funny to humiliate your colleagues by embarrassing them or hurting their feelings in front of others.

Here’s what some folks around the blogosphere said on or about April Fool’s Day:
