But after being unable to agree to a deal with Bay, the Red Sox have quickly moved on to Plan B. First Boston signed John Lackey to a big deal and then they inked Mike Cameron to a two-year contract worth around $15 million.

The 36-year-old Cameron will likely be the everyday left fielder for the Red Sox. Although his batting average has never been stellar, he has a good eye and is regarded as a quality person in the clubhouse.

He spent his last two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. Last year, the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder hit .250 with 24 homers, 70 RBIs, 78 runs and 75 walks. His high number of walks allowed him to have a respectable .342 on-base percentage.

As it turns out, the Red Sox have basically traded Bay for Lackey and Cameron. We’ll have to wait and see if this was the right move or if Boston will end up missing Bay’s big bat.

A few days ago, the Texas Rangers and the Boston Red Sox appeared to have agreed on a deal that sent Mike Lowell and cash from the Red Sox to the Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez. However, there are now stumbling blocks in the deal being finalized.

First of all, the Rangers aren’t convinced that Lowell is healthy. While the hip that he had surgery on last season doesn’t seem to be an issue, his thumb is another matter. Lowell hurt his thumb near the end of last season and The Boston Globe is saying that the Rangers have reservations about the thumb.

Another issue may involved Bud Selig. Since the Red Sox are reportedly giving the Rangers nearly $10 million to complete the trade, the commissioner needs to okay the deal. While it may just be a formality, there’s no indication that Selig has given his stamp of approval.

If the trade gets reversed, look for the Red Sox to try to trade him elsewhere. Lowell doesn’t fit in their 2010 plans and they are obviously willing to do what it takes to send him to another team.

Ramirez also angered a lot of people with his antics — as is usually the case. As the saying goes, it’s just Manny being Manny.

Going into the 2010 baseball season, the Dodgers will hope that they get a season out of Ramirez like they saw in 2008. After being acquired via trade from the Boston Red Sox, Ramirez was very good.

In free agency, Ramirez might have scored a big deal from an American League team. That said, baseball clubs might have been scared off by all the baggage that Ramirez’s back comes with.

Although Mills hasn’t been a manager on the big league level, you has plenty of experience on the minor league level. He was a manager in the minor leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies and the Chicago Cubs. Mills was also a coach with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Astros finished the 2009 baseball season with a record of 74-88. They started slowly, went on a run but then slumped to the finish. Mills will try to turn the Astros around and bring the first World Series title to Houston.

The Red Sox have plenty of blame to go around. Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Bay and David Ortiz all hit under .200 for the series.

For the Angels, they now move on to face the New York Yankees for a right to advance to the 2009 World Series.

On the mound, starting pitcher Andy Pettitte performed well for New York. He went six innings and gave up two earned runs to improve his record to 14-7. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth inning to save his 44th game of the season.

Despite the loss, the Red Sox are in a good position to make the playoffs. Although their chase in the AL East is over, they hold a 6-game lead over the Texas Rangers in the AL Wild Card race. And while they were swept this time by the Yankees, there’s a decent chance they’ll get a chance to get revenge in the 2009 playoffs.

The Yankees and Red Sox battle again on Sunday. Another win by the Yankees and New York will officially clinch the American League East division title.

The Red Sox went on to lose by a final count of 9-5 to their arch rivals. Alex Rodriguez led the way by going 3-for-3 with two walks, three runs and four RBIs. His big hit was in the third inning when he hit a two-run home run off of Lester shortly before Lester was knocked out.

The win extended the Yankees lead over the Red Sox to 6.5 games in the AL East. It’s now only a matter of days before the Yankees clinch the division.

He was great to start the season, then had a relatively average stretch but Greinke has been masterful down the stretch of the season.

Against the Boston Red Sox on Monday, Greinke went six scoreless innings to pick up his 15th win of the year. He struck out five batters and lowered his ERA on the season to 2.08.

In his last five starts, Greinke has been awesome. During that stretch, he has pitched 35 innings and has only allowed one earned run and only 18 hits. In September alone, he has an ERA of 0.45.

Monday’s performance allowed the Royals to beat the Red Sox by a final count of 5-1. The win improved the Royals record to 63-88. The fact that the Royals are a bad team could hurt Greinke but if voters consider how little support he has had this year, it should make him the clear cut AL Cy Young Award favorite.

Young was injured on September 1st and since then has only one at-bat. In that lone at-bat, which took place on September 15th against the Oakland Athletics, Young once again felt pain after getting off balance.

A couple of weeks ago, the Rangers appeared to be in a good position in the AL Wild Card race. But after injuries to Young and Josh Hamilton, Texas is now a long-shot to see the 2009 baseball players.

Prior to getting hurt, Young was having one of the best seasons of his career. On the year, he’s hitting .322 with 22 homers, 67 RBIs and 76 runs.

As it stands, the Rangers trail the Boston Red Sox by 6.5 games in the AL Wild Card race. Getting Young back in a day or two would give Texas an outside chance to making the playoffs — but both scenarios seem unlikely at this point.
