Armed with the most ambitious social agenda in history, the Obama Administration released its record-setting $3.55 trillion budget yesterday and urged Americans to ignore a $1.4 trillion net tax increase and instead focus on the $17 billion in planned savings which absolutely no one expects will ever happen.

Still, Administration officials nearly fell over themselves trying in to top one another in self-congratulatory rhetoric over the “significant” savings which amounted to less than one-half of one percent of the total budget.

To put that number in perspective, that’s like sitting down with your teenage daughter after finding she just spent $1000 on cocaine and congratulating her for saving money by not buying a five-dollar chai latte on the way home from the dealer.

Vowing to continue to scour the bazillion dollar budget for ten-dollar savings an Administration official lamented, “None of this is going to be easy.”

Sure, not like compared to figuring out if you’re going to pay the rent or give your kids cat-food-and-jelly sandwiches for lunch.

Asking for credit for proposing $17 billion in cuts from a $3.6 trillion budget is like a drunk driver congratulating himself for wearing his seat belt after plowing into a school bus.

I don’t know about you, but that’s exactly the kind of savvy financial management I’d want in place if I was going to put someone in charge of running the nation’s banking system and the world’s biggest automaker.

What could possibly go wrong?
