14 More Players Invited To US Camp

Eight players have already been selected to participate in the U.S. women’s basketball camp. Fourteen more were invited to participate as well.
While Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Tamika Catchings, Candace Parker, Sylvia Fowles, Cappie Pondexter, Seimone Augustus and Kara Lawson are guaranteed a spot on the team, the fourteen other players are not. They will have to earn a spot even though they were invited to camp. Coach Geno Auriemma is probably thrilled to have a variety of former UCONN players at his disposal. In addition to Bird and Taurasi, he will always have the pleasure of coaching Swin Cash, Ashja …read more

8 Players Picked For Team USA

With Geno Auriemma already in place as head coach of the U.S. women’s basketball team, the next step was to fill out the roster. Eight players have been selected.
UCONN standouts, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, will reunite with their former head coach at USA basketball camp. Tamika Catchings, Candace Parker, Cappie Pondexter, Kara Lawson, Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus round out the rest of the eight.
“Naming these eight players was not that difficult of a decision to make, I’m sure, because those eight were truly instrumental in winning the Olympics in Beijing,” Auriemma said, according to Yahoo! Sports.
The U.S. women’s …read more

Lisa Leslie Reaches 6,000 Points

Even if the Los Angeles Sparks do not win an WNBA Championship this season,  Lisa Leslie should have no regrets about retiring. She’s already achieved a host of accolades and awards throughout her career, and is one of the most recognizable faces in women’s basketball.
Sure, Candace Parker is a household name, but Leslie was dunking basketballs well before Parker could even drive a car.
Leslie reached yet another milestone in her basketball career by reaching 6,000 points in a game against the Indiana Fever. The exclamation point of the achievement was made as Leslie hit an 11-foot jumper with only 11.9 …read more

The WNBA’s True Impact

There has been a lot of conversation lately revolving around whether or not the WNBA is worth the investment. The league itself is struggling to remain financially viable for the NBA and teams are constantly folding year over year. Another city pops up, willing to take a chance and form an expansion team. Why? If there’s no money to be made, what’s the point?
The truth is that the WNBA’s impact is far more than financial. I read an article on ESPN about how President Obama’s daughters love watching women’s basketball.  One particular quote stood out the most: “Sasha and Malia, …read more

The Injured WNBA All Stars Of 2009

This year’s WNBA All Star game is marred by injuries. Lisa Leslie (Los Angeles), Lauren Jackson (Seattle) and Sylvia Fowles (Chicago) just to name a few, are on the injured list. As a result, many reserves were chosen to fill certain spots. And even though Diana Taurasi was suspended two games for her DUI offense, she has been chosen as a reserve.
Also on the injured list are  L.A.’s Candace Parker and Minnesota’s Seimone Augustus. Augustus is out for the season with an ACL injury and Parker is just getting back to practice after giving birth to her daughter in May.
Thankfully, …read more

Guess Who’s Back?

The city of Los Angeles has an opportunity to win two championship basketball titles this season. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers to yet another NBA championship, and Candace Parker can easily do the same for the Sparks in the WNBA.
Last season’s Rookie of the Year and MVP took some time off to have a baby. Now, she’s back and ready to play.
Parker let the world know via Twitter that: “I’m bbbbaaaaacccccckkkkkkk!! headed to first practice!”
According to ESPN, Parker practiced for the first time since her maternity leave but told the Los Angeles Times she would have a better idea about …read more

WNBA Teams Getting Sponsors For Extra Cash

It’s no secret that the WNBA has been losing money since its inception. The NBA is basically carrying the women’s league on its own shoulders. But, because the WNBA has a solid fan base and has helped to showcase the nation’s top talent in women’s basketball and bring women’s college basketball into the national spotlight as well (would we know so much about players like Candace Parker with out it?), the promotional powers-that-be are doing their best to help keep the WNBA alive.
The basic necessity is money. You can’t run a league with out money — in any sport. So …read more

Lisa Leslie Wants Another WNBA Championship

And she wants it before she retires. So Candace Parker better hurry up and recover from having her baby, because Lisa Leslie is planning on retiring at the end of this season.
Parker is a key component to the Los Angeles Sparks‘ success. She’s the reigning WNBA MVP and was voted rookie of the year last season.
“I think Candace is going to come in when she knows she’s effective and she can contribute,” Leslie said, according to ESPN.com. “I think the beautiful part of it is that she is young enough that she will be able to do it faster than …read more
