Carlos Zambrano Suspended Six Games

For his antics during his last start, Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano was suspended for six games. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to watch the Carlos Zambrano video of his epic meltdown.

Following his tirade, the star Cubs pitcher was apologetic.

Said Zambrano: “I apologize for that. Like I said, I should have more control of myself in that situation. I just wanted to get out of that inning and win the ballgame. I didn’t say a bad word. I should have gone to the clubhouse and keep watching the game. I apologize for throwing the ball and the other things.”

According to sources, Zambrano won’t appeal the suspension or the accompanying fine. He’s expected to start the game following the completion of his suspension.

Don’t look now but the Chicago Cubs are inching ever so close to a playoff appearance, and dare we say… a possible World Series bid? Shhhh! But where would the Cubs be without guys like Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano and, let’s not forget, Carlos Zambrano? Probably not in first place!

Another great quote to pass on. Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano had to be lifted from Thursday’s game again the Cincinnati Reds for a cracked molar. Here’s what Zambrano had to say afterwards:

“I think I ate too much gum, and the gum has a lot of sugar,” Zambrano said. “I keep telling my daughter not to eat a lot of gum and I’m not a good example. I think my daughter today will be all over me at the house. I accept it.”

I wonder if anyone has ever introduced Zambrano to sugarless gum? If not, here’s a marketing chance for some company to find its new spokesman!>

Zambrano and Soto need police escort after event – VIDEO

Chicago Cubs stars Carlos Zambrano and Geovany Soto needed help Wednesday afternoon. The batterymates were escorted from a Little League field by Chicago police officers due to a raucous scene. Men, women and children were all calling out Zambrano’s and Soto’s name in an attempt to receive an autograph. Some fans were just trying to get close to the MLB players.

The two Cubs were in attendance at Little Cubs Park in Humboldt Park that was being dedicated. After about two-and-one-half minutes, the duo finally reaches their cars and speed away with the help of the CPD. It’s a scene that you just have to see.

A hockey game at Wrigley Field?

You heard it right. On New Years Day 2009, the Chicago Blackhawks will host the Detroit Red Wings within the frozen confines of Wrigley Field. No, there won’t be any ivy on the wall, but I’d imagine there would be plenty of snow on the field. I’m sure the bleacher bums at Wrigley will be in full force for this event. I wonder if the they will sell out the seats that sit across the street on top of the apartments? Hmm…

I guess the only other question is will Wrigley Field dwellers try to sing ‘Take me out to the ballgame’ at the end of the second period? After all, members of the Blackhawks did sing during the seventh inning stretch of a Cubs game this season. Maybe we can get Derrek Lee, Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Zambrano to at least sing O’Canada before the game!

A hockey game at Wrigley Field?

Today on the Thursday 10, I am going to post the top 10 current players I’d like to see become managers one day. And no, there will be no catchers on this list, because that would just be too realistic. On with the list!

10. Randy Johnson – The Big Unit – What a site it would be for Randy Johnson to walk out to trade lineup cards and go over ground rules. The 6-10 lefty would make for great television to see him running out to argue a call with an umpire.

9. Scott Rolen – One can only imagine that Rolen’s problems with managers in the past (i.e. Tony LaRussa) could lead to seeing how confrontational he would be as a manager. Maybe we could make Rolen and Jeff Kent co-managers? Hmm…

8. Richie Sexson – Big Sexy – Obviously, he would have some of what Randy has going for him with the height status, but the reason I’m picking Richie is for the fact that he can start a brawl for absolutely no reason. Some poor rookie pitcher tosses one too close to his lead off hitter and here comes Big Sexy running out of the dugout throwing his sharpie or whatever is close to get the brawl started.

7. Gabe Kapler – He’s already tried it before. Plus, if the team ever needs a pinch hitter he can activate himself and swat a home run. We’ll call it the “Roger Dorn” rule.

6. Brendan Ryan – Because there’s always one manager in the league that no fan seems to know anything about.

5. Brandon Backe – One announcer during the 2005 World Series said that Backe had the best “Thatta Boy” cheer he’s ever heard. Backe is always talking on the bench when he’s not pitching. As a manager, he’d make a good cheerleader and keep his team loose and pumped up.

4. Kevin Millar – Cowboy Up – Known for his clubhouse antics, Millar would really keep the guys on his squad on their toes.

3. Billy Wagner – When he gets older, this guy is going to be just like Jim Leyland. That old school attitude that says exactly what he is thinking and doesn’t care who is listening.

2. Manny Ramirez – Manny Being Manny – That’s all that really needs to be said. Think about what a team would be like with Manny in charge. Everyone would have dreads that almost completely covered their numbers on their backs, and it would be required to high-five a fan after making a play in the field.

1. Carlos Zambrano – Talking to himself on the mound, getting into fights with teammates. Are we sure this guy isn’t related to Lou Piniella? Zambrano has a really fiery-nature about him and can become really animated, really quick. Think Ozzie Guillen (for quotes) plus Hal McCrae (for locker room outbursts). Now we’re talking! Zambrano wins!
