CES 2008: A Closing Letter
January 13, 2008 by Zach Flauaus

Oh, CES. How we loved this year, with your gargantuan 150-inch plasma, your flashing lights, and your promoting of the shrinking HD-DVD field. You were mentioned on nearly every website, blog, TV station, radio station, and even our grandmas mentioned it. How glad we were last year when we learned that you and MacWorld wouldn’t coincide this year, but were then ticked off when we learned that next year is not the same case. The amount of people that attended and covered it were enormous, and you were easily over-covered. Might we ask that only press people and a select …read more

Universal to Currently Support HD-DVD… Currently
January 11, 2008 by Zach Flauaus

The HD-DVD group can take a breath, although a short one at that. While Universal Studios has not terminated their usage of HD-DVD, they also have not renewed their contract, which means that they could drop support any minute. Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for Universal said, “Contrary to unsubstantiated rumors from unnamed sources, Universal’s current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format.” They’re still treading on thin ice, so this is definitely a hot topic. Will 2008 be the year a victor comes out? Only time can tell. That, and movie studios …read more
Texas Instruments new DualView, Bringing Back the Glasses

No, you don’t have your 3D glasses on yet. That’s just preparing you for what’s coming. Texas Instruments has announced their DualView technology that will allow users to watch two different sources on one DLP TV. Of course, there are a few catches. First off, you need to buy a 3D-ready DLP TV. You also need a “compatible source” (whatever that may include), and special DualView glasses. Granted we don’t know if they will be the old-school red and blue glasses, but we couldn’t think of anything else to put on there. Yet again, no word on availability, so you …read more

Pioneer’s Project Kuro: Different than the regular Kuro
January 6, 2008 by Zach Flauaus

Pioneer already has their Kuro line with some of the deepest, best blacks seen on the entire market today. Now in Pioneer’s roadmap is “Project Kuro” and it is claiming to display absolute black, as in no light at all, and as well as being the thinnest plasma at an absolutely astounding 9 millimeters. For those who like comparisons, that’s thinner than your second generation iPod shuffle. Sadly, we won’t see this in stores in 2008. But we can keep drooling over the press pictures, can’t we?

When you think of Logitech Harmony remotes, you may think of expensive, king-of-all remotes. Well, the Harmony One is still in that category. The Harmony One has a 2.2″ touch screen with easy access to turning your home theater and more on in one click of a button. The remote is also a piano-black glossy finish which looks snazzy and somewhat similar to the TiVo Series 3 remote. This has been their most extensively-tested device as well, with the testing time totaling to more than 20,000 hours. 20,000 hours on a single remote. That’s quite amazing, really. You can demo …read more

Belkin’s FlyWire Beams HD Through Your House Wirelessly
January 4, 2008 by Zach Flauaus
With CES 2008 just around the corner, manufacturers are pushing their newest, flashiest products out the door for the public to see, and sometimes they even announce products before CES. Belkin has announced their newest HD product, the FlyWire, which will send HD signals over the 5GHz from whatever source you’d like, be it your Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player, perhaps your HD game console, or your dusty little Apple TV. There hasn’t been too much information announced, but the maker of the Wireless HD chip, AMIMON, says they have completed tests where they were able to be up to 100 …read more
