Jake Peavy was finally ready to make his debut for the Chicago White Sox. He was on the disabled list since June 13th when he hurt his right ankle as a member of the San Diego Padres. Peavy’s return to the mound was delayed when his pitching arm was hit by a line drive while pitching in the minor leagues.

On Saturday against the Kansas City Royals, Peavy went five innings and gave up three hits, two walks and three earned runs while striking out five batters. Thanks to strong run support, Peavy was able to pick up the win as the White Sox cruised to a 13-3 victory.

The White Sox traded for Peavy to help make a push for the 2009 baseball playoffs. But after realizing he wasn’t ready and the team kept disappointing, the White Sox were patient in getting Peavy back on the big league level.

While with the Padres this year, Peavy was 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA. The 28-year-old had his best season in 2007 when he went 19-6 with a 2.54 ERA. He was also named the NL Cy Young Award winner that season.

As it stands, the White Sox are 5.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

“We’re bring him here to come off the bench and be a great influence in the clubhouse,” said Dodgers GM Ned Colleti. “He’s one of the true great guys in the game.”

In Garland, the Dodgers got a starting pitcher who can step right into their rotation. On the season, he has a 4.29 ERA to go with an 8-11 record. He played this year with the Arizona Diamondbacks after spending last year with the Los Angeles Angels.

The White Sox will received Justin Fuller in return for Thome. Fuller is an infielder in the minors. The Diamondbacks received a player to be named.

On the mound for the Red Sox was Tim Wakefield — who hadn’t pitched since July 8th due to a back injury. In his return, the knuckleballer was very good. He allowed only one earned run on six hits in seven innings of work.

The win was an important one for the Red Sox. They remain within 6 games of the New York Yankees in the AL East and continue to sport a lead of 2.5 games in the AL Wild Card race.

Currently, Peavy is on the disabled list with an ankle injury. The White Sox believe that he’ll be able to return to the mound late in the month of August. Considering they’ve waited since May to add him to the roster, this wait isn’t too bad.

In return, the Padres got four pitching prospects: Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Adama Russell and Dexter Carter. Richard and Poreda have pitched in the big leagues this year while Russell and Carter have been in the minors.

Currently, the White Sox are 1.5 games back in the AL Central behind the Detroit Tigers. They lead the Minnesota Twins by 1.5 games.

Considering that Anderson is still only 27 years old and scouts believe he has considerable natural skill, the Red Sox are gambling that he’ll be able to figure it all out at some point in the relatively near future.

As for the White Sox, they are adding a veteran in Kotsay who should be able to help right away. He began this year on the disabled list and never could get into a rhythm. He’s hitting just .257 with one homer and five RBIs in 74 at-bats. The 33-year-old has been in the bigs since 1997. For his career, he has 110 homers, 614 RBIs and 713 runs to go along with a .281 batting average and a .336 on-base percentage.

Magglio Ordonez, the six-time All-Star outfielder, has been benched indefinitely by manager Jim Leyland. Ordonez is struggling at the plate and Leyland thinks some time away will help Ordonez settle down and get his stroke back.

On the season, Ordonez is hitting .273 with two homers, 22 RBI and 28 runs. In the month of June, he’s hitting just .250 with no homers, three RBIs and five runs. Considering that he’s hit at least 21 homers and driven in at least 103 RBIs in the last three seasons, he’s far from his typical pace.

Although he’s 35 years old, most scouts agree that Ordonez should be able to turn it around and that it’s not a case of him simply getting old.

Replacing Ordonez in the lineup will be Ryan Raburn. The 28-year-old outfielder is hitting .225 with four homers, 14 RBIs and 15 runs. He’s never played more than 100 games or hit more than four long balls in his four years in the major leagues.

Even though they’ve lost six of their last ten games, the Tigers are 35-31 and in first place in the AL Central.

The 20-1 final score was the second largest win for Minnesota, while it tied Chicago’s worst loss in their history. With the win, the Twins are now 19-23. The loss dropped the White Sox to 17-23.

Bartolo Colon got pounded for eight runs, seven hits and two walks in two innings of work. However, the good news for his ERA is that only one of the eight runs were earned. Lance Broadway entered the game next and gave up six runs in 3.1 innings. Next, Jimmy Gobble allowed the final six runs in one inning of work. Amazingly, D.J. Carrasco threw 2.2 innings of shutout ball to finish out the game for the White Sox.

At the plate, Joe Mauer was 3-for-4 with two runs and six RBIs. Mauer’s big hit was a grand slam in the 6th inning that made it 16-0. Second baseman Matt Tolbert entered the game with four RBIs — and added four more RBIs and his first home run.

Michael Cuddyer and Joe Crede added homers for the Twins. Nick Blackburn pitched seven scoreless innings to pick up his third win of the season.

According to a report on ESPN.com, the White Sox agreed with Contreras and decided to follow through with his wish.
Over six starts this season, Contreras has an ERA of 8.19 and he’s given up 40 hits and 16 walks in 29.2 innings. Without much control of his pitches, Contreras has struggled to get anyone out.

Before the White Sox could send Contreras to the minors, he had to clear waivers. Considering that Contreras has more than $8 million left on his contract, that process was simply a formality.

In the minor leagues, Contreras will continue to start games and he’ll spend extra time trying to master his split-finger fastball. He will also work on spotting his pitches and his velocity.

To replace Contreras on their roster, Chicago called up Jimmy Gobble.

Zack Greinke continued his amazing start to the 2009 baseball season. The Kansas City Royals hurler was marvelous once again on Monday. His pitching performance allowed the Royals to win 3-0 against the Chicago White Sox and improve to 15-11 on the season.
Pitching all nine innings, Greinke needed only 104 pitches to allow six hits, no walks and no earned runs while striking out ten batters. He has won all six of his starts and his ERA is a microscopic 0.40 and his WHIP is an equally as impressive 0.84.

Zack Greinke continued his amazing start to the 2009 baseball season. The Kansas City Royals hurler was marvelous once again on Monday. His pitching performance allowed the Royals to win 3-0 against the Chicago White Sox and improve to 15-11 on the season.

In his first four starts of the season, Greinke didn’t allow an earned run. He allowed two earned runs against the Toronto Blue Jays in his fifth start, however he came back as strong as ever against the White Sox in his sixth start.

Thanks mostly to Greinke’s pitching, the Royals currently find themselves in first place of the AL Central. They lead the Detroit Tigers by 1.5 games, the Minnesota Twins by 2 games and the Chicago White Sox by 2.5 games.

Last season, the Royals were 75-87 on the year. The 2009 campaign appears to be a season where the Royals can finally make some noise, especially if Greinke keeps pitching the way he currently is performing.
