Charles Barkley likely didn’t have the world’s best New Years after his arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. Barkley got popped for his DUI while in Arizona after reportedly attending a party that included such notables as Steve Urkel and Michael Strahan.
If Barkley were commenting on Barkley’s arrest, we’d probably hear two things. First, we’d hear about how turrible it was. Then we’d hear Barkley call Barkley a knucklehead.

The former NBA great of the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers currently works for TNT. If you watch the NBA at all, you’ll know Barkley as the jolly Round Mound of Analysis seen on TNT before, during and after games. Recently, Barkley and the TNT got chuckles heard around the world for their skit in which Chris Webber threw his shoes at Barkley.

The good news is that Barkley knows he shouldn’t be a role model. Here’s a vintage video of Barkley reminding us of that fact with none other than Nirvana:

Recently United States President George W. Bush showed good dexterity in dodging a pair of shoes thrown at him while in Iraq. On Thursday, Charles Barkley had to show similar dexterity in the TNT Studios when Chris Webber threw his shoes at him. You can see a video of the incident at the bottom of this entry.

While Barkley did a good job dodging the shoes, I have to admit that W appeared to be the more nimble dodger. The POTUS calmly dodged a pair of shoes coming right at him. Barkley, on the other hand, looked somewhat scared and his reaction time wasn’t nearly as impressive.

While the Iraqi journalist got tackled and is who knows where now, Webber got to stick around for the rest of the show. During that time, the TNT crew took several slow motion looks at Barkley avoiding the thrown shoes.

Here is the video of Charles Barkley dodging the shoes thrown by Chris Webber:

Yes, Chris Webber’s legacy will forever be tied to the Fab Five — along with cohorts Jimmy King, Ray Jackson, Juwan Howard and Jalen Rose — and that fateful timeout. And although they never technically existed, I still have fond memories of the Fab Five. Black socks and the baggy shorts became required clothing, even for us whitest of children.

Chris Webber is retiring. And now, the requisite time-out clip. Let’s just get it out of the way.

The Fab Five was cool. If I had to do it again, I would. Yes, even though the ripple effect has essentially destroyed Michigan basketball, damn those guys were cool. And despite never being better than runner-up, they are the most memorable college basketball team of the 90s (and perhaps the most important.) I looked good in those black Nike socks.

And so, Chris Webber, the most notable of the Fab Five, is retiring. He’s ending his career that became an odd manifestation of the Fab Five: one with high expectations that would fall just short, and often fall just short in particularly devastating fashion (see Kings-Lakers game seven.) And I feel really old.
