Earlier in the month, Wakefield was named to the All-Star team for the first time in his career — quite an accomplishment for a 42-year-old who has been in Major League Baseball since 1992.

On the season, Wakefield has a 4.31 ERA to go along with a record of 11-3. Prior to this injury, he was on pase to win the most games of his big league career.

With Wakefield heading to the DL, the Red Sox called up Clay Buchholz. The 24-year-old will make his second start of the season in Wakefield’s spot in the rotation. Buchholz’s other start saw him go 5.2 innings and give up only one earned run.

Clay Buchholz, he of the fingernail injury, threw a no-hitter last year in his Major League debut. (And a shout-out goes to fellow Sox fans Caesar and Pat for joining the excitement).
As for Lester, he’s the first Sox leftie to throw a no-hitter since 1956. Check out the ESPN highlights here (2m, 38s):

Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz probably isn’t feeling all that macho right about now. The rightie is on the DL after breaking the middle fingernail of his pitching hand, which opens the door to middle finger musings (e.g., Did he flip the bird in traffic too near the closed sunroof, resulting in a jammed finger and broken nail?) as well as candidacy for one of pro sports most embarrassing or wimpiest injuries.

If we really wanted to get catty, and we really do, we’d point the—wait for it—finger at Buchholz’s sweetie, Penthouse Pet Erica Ellyson. (You know, the chick whose girlfriend status represents Buchholz’s “moving up the ladder” from his ex, a Victoria’s Secret model. This is according the Clay’s clearly-an-expert-in-classy-gals Dad). The fact that the pitcher is <strike>banging</strike> dating an uninhibited va-va voomy type suggests that any number of injuries could be sustained if certain activities got, um, creative. Or even if she’s just a really, really strong raker.

Then again, it could just be a legitimate pitching injury. We aren’t even sure if those two crazy lovebirds are still together.

The biggest blogosphere buzz on the Boston Red Sox the last few days, fortunately, has to do with the personal life of one of the team’s up-and-coming pitchers. (Thanks to devoted reader Caesar for sending this our way!)

You may have heard by now that Clay Buchholz, he of the—pardon the pun—virgin shutout in September 2007, is seeing 2008 Penthouse Pet of the Year, Erica Ellyson.

His father, quite likely doing that whole living life through his son thing right about now, had this to say:

“I know he’s met her, gone out with her, but I don’t know if you consider that dating . . . but hey, a boy could do worse. It doesn’t surprise me any.”

Speaking of surprises, what amuses (and repulses) us is this insight into the elder Buchholz’s chick hierarchy:

“Last year up in Boston he was dating a Victoria’s Secret model, so he’s moving up the ladder . . . . I mean, he’s got pretty good taste.”

WTF? A Penthouse <strike>camera slut</strike> gal ranks higher on the “You’ve made it!” scale than a Victoria’s Secret model? ”Penthouse” and “classy” rarely appear in the same sentence, unless there’s a “definitely NOT” in there somewhere.

Here’s wishing Clay and his new honey hours of intense, passionate . . . conversation.

Need pictures to help envision their, um, togetherness? Enjoy.
