Prior to the start of the 2009 NFL season, James Davis was pointed to as a sleeper rookie. During preseason play, Davis had very good stats and there were whispers that he could push Jamal Lewis out of his job as the starting running back for the Cleveland Browns.

It didn’t work out that way. Prior to Week 1, Davis got injured in an auto accident. Then during Week 1, Davis hurt his shoulder. Now, that shoulder injury has cause the Browns to put Davis on IR — ending his rookie season.

In the two weeks he was able to play, Davis had nine carries for 15 yards. He also caught four passes for five yards.

This news is another blow to the Browns, who are also dealing with an injury to Jamal Lewis. As it stands, Jerome Harrison will likely be the team’s starting running back this weekend.

For the 0-3 Browns, they’ll need one of their running backs to step up to avoid an embarrassing season. That RB, however, won’t be James Davis.

Next week, it doesn’t get any easier for Quinn. The Ravens have made life tough on opponents for years. If he’s not on top of his game, his starting gig may be in jeopardy.

Considering that the Browns have one of the NFL’s best backup QBs in Derek Anderson, the coaching staff won’t delay too much longer in making a switch. Anderson has had success in Cleveland and there are people around the Browns organization who believe that he gives the team a better chance to win.

The car accident leaves the Browns short at running back. Starter Jamal Lewis is healthy but backup running back Jerome Harrison is also questionable. Cedric Peerman, another RB on the team, is listed as doubtful.

If all three of his backups are out, expect Lewis to get a lot of touches. The bad news for Lewis is that Cleveland is going up against the Minnesota Vikings — a team that has been almost impossible to run against in recent years.

If he is to join the starters on offense, he’ll likely have to beat out Hank Fraley. Although Fraley has been a good offensive lineman at times during his career, most scouts agree that he struggled last season.

The Browns also signed fellow rookie Kaluka Maiava recently. A linebacker out of USC, Maiava was drafted in the fourth round.

Cleveland Browns rookies will report to training camp on July 31st.

Right now, most team insiders believe that Brady has the advantage when it comes to being named the starter for the regular season. However, considering that Anderson was a Pro Bowl quarterback in 2007, he definitely has the talent to win the job.

Don’t expect Browns coach Eric Mangini to pick a starter until late in the exhibition season.

Jurevicius has also sued Cleveland Clinic. The report of this lawsuit was first uncovered by The Plain Dealer.

According to the lawsuit, the Browns didn’t tell him that its training areas weren’t clean. The lawsuit specifically points out Richard Figler and Anthony Miniaci, two physicians, who didn’t give Jurevicius proper warning.

Due to the staph infection, Jurevicius wasn’t able to play last year while under contract with the Browns. He did play in 2006 and 2007 with the Browns and totaled 90 receptions, six touchdowns and more than 1,100 receiving yards over that two-year span.

Prior to joining the Browns, he played from 1998 to 2001 with the New York Giants and from 2002 to 2004 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Seattle Seahawks were his team in the 2005 season. In his career, Jurevicius has 323 receptions, 4,119 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns. The best season of his career came in his lone season with the Seahawks where he pulled in 55 receptions, ten receiving touchdowns and 694 receiving yards.

According to the lawsuit, the 34-year-old Jurevicius may never be able to play professional football again due to the staph infection.

Kosar’s debts include:

Additionally, Bernie’s Steakhouse, a restaurant he owned, has been forced to close. He also has a home that he’s trying to sell that is listed at $3.5 million.

It’s difficult not to feel sorry for Kosar. With so many people in the United States struggling financially, Kosar’s struggles show that even smart, rich athletes aren’t immune to it all.

From 2001 until 2006, Bennett played for the Titans. His best year came in 2004 when he had 80 catches for 1,247 yards and 11 touchdowns. After leaving the Titans, he signed with the St. Louis Rams. In 2007, Bennett had a disappointing season that saw him catch only 33 passes in 14 games. Last season, Bennett got hurt after catching one pass and missed the final 15 games of the 2008 campaign.

Despite Bennett’s disappointing last few seasons, the Titans could use Bennett’s size for their receiving corps. At 6-foot-5, Bennett would be a good target for Tennessee — especially around the goal line.

If he doesn’t end up signing with the Titans, expect the lanky wide receiver to sign with the Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles or the Baltimore Ravens.

To replace the speedy wide receiver, the Browns have gone in a number of different directions. In the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Browns selected two wide receivers: Brian Robiskie of Ohio State and Tim Massaquoi of Georgia. In free agency, Cleveland has signed David Patten and Mike Furrey.

Patten played the last two season with the New Orleans Saints. At 34, Patten could offer experience to an otherwise without receiving corps. Furrey played the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions. In 2006, Furrey collected 98 receptions and more than 1,000 receiving yards while playing in Mike Martz’ high-powered offense.

Stay tuned to see if Cleveland adds any more talent next to Braylon Edwards to try to replace the probable loss of Donte Stallworth.
