Should Mangino be Fired?

Mark Mangino isn’t known for being a nice guy. People may have put up with his rants in the past, but with new allegations from players who say that the Kansas coach was abusive during practices, some people are, of course, calling for his head on a platter.
Says Mangino of the issue,
“I run this program with a lot of integrity. I have been in this conference for nearly 20 years, and what I can tell you is that our coaching intensity is not largely different from the rest of the Big Eight and Big 12 teams I’ve observed.”

BCA Reports on Minorities in College FB
November 20, 2009 by Allison Boyer

Every year, Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA) releases “report cards” where they judge college minority hiring practices. This year is no different than every other year in the fact that they were disappointed, overall. There were a few high points – both Miami (OH) and New Mexico State got straight As in the five graded categories. What were these categories?
Communication between the BCA and the school
Ratio of minorities interviewed for positions
Length of search for candidates when positions open
Percentage of minorities on search committees
School’s adherence to affirmative action policies
Ok, I may be unpopular for saying this, but I don’t think it’s …read more
More College Football Coaches Bite the Dust

We already talked about a handful of college coaches who are stepping down or being fired at the end of the 2009 season. Looks like these coaches are getting some company. I’m sure this is just the beginning, especially with schools like Notre Dame questioning whether a mediocre season is good enough.
One of the new coaches leaving is doing so under his own power. San Jose State will say goodbye to Dick Tomey, who announced that he’ll be retiring following the school’s game against Louisiana Tech in early December. Tomey is 71 years old and has been head coach for …read more
College Coaches are Already Being Fired

I don’t like it when colleges are fired or step down in the middle of a season, barring health problems or scandals that are really distracting the team. Even with the most horrible season, I think it’s jolting to a team for a school to fire someone, and if a coach steps down mid-season, it says to me “I’m not committed and don’t believe in this team.”
Early this season, Western Illinois’ Don Patterson stepped down. I can’t fault him for the decision, as he’s battled tonsillar cancer in the past and is still feeling the effects, despite being cancer-free as …read more
Should Coach Comments be Censored?
October 27, 2009 by Allison Boyer

After this past week, at least two college football coaches were given warnings about negative comments. The two comments in question?
Comment #1:
“I don’t even know why we have replay right now in the Southeastern Conference if they’re not going to utilize it…I hope he’s severely punished if he ever works another SEC game again, because I think it’s completely unacceptable.”
- Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, in regards to a play he thought should have been reviewed and overturned
Comment #2:
“You run another play and you throw an interception or they throw another flag on us — I wasn’t going to let …read more
Michigan has an Unlikely Ally: Ohio State

You won’t find the Ohio State Buckeyes speaking up on behalf of the Michigan Wolverines often ever. That is, until now. With things crumbling at Michigan amid lawsuits and practice scandals, players at the school’s biggest rival are coming to their defense – at least about the so-called “ridiculous” practice schedule.
According to reports, Michigan’s coaching staff has been pushing the players to work out many more hours than is allowable according to NCAA rules. While these extra hours are “voluntary” on paper, anonymous players have said that punishment was in store for anyone who didn’t volunteer their time.
Sez the Buckeyes, …read more

Tennessee fans were in an uproar when Phillip Fulmer was fired (or quit, depending on who you ask). Now, the former head football coach is talking about returning to college ball by the start of the 2010 season. And he isn’t just going to accept any old job. According to Fulmer, he’s looking for team in a conference where he can compete on a national level.
“I have a great picture in mind. Somebody that’s committed to winning championships and being the best that they can be, with a chance to compete in a conference that’s nationally recognized. I’m not going …read more

This will be Kirk Ferentz’s eleventh year as head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes – and with his new contract, he’ll be there for many years to come. Today, he signed an agreement with the school that will keep him at Iowa until 2015.
The school’s getting a bargain – Ferentz’s alary and bonuses won’t change with the new contract. He reportedly earns $3.02 million annually, so Ferentz is getting a good deal too. The agreement also gives him up to 35 hours per year of private plane use, as well as bonuses for winning seasons.
Iowa’s record under Ferentz is 70-53, …read more
Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh Volunteers in Peru

Stanford coach and former quarterback Jim Harbaugh isnt afraid to stir things up on the field. He’ll probably go down in history for coaching the team that took down USC in that historic blowout.
But he’s more than just a coach. This summer, he showed the world that he is also a humanitarian. Harbaugh spent a week in Peru helping to buil shelters for the poor. He also helped fellow humanitarians buil a new roof for an orphanage and packed food bags that will be distributed to families who really need them. Each bag should feed a family for a …read more
Should Coach Rod Say He’s Sorry?

When West Virginia’s head coach, Rich Rodriguez left to coach Michigan instead, a lot of fans were mad. After all, less than a year before that, he made it sound like he was dedicated to being with the program for a long time.
And he still hasn’t apologized for leaving the way he did. Should he have to though? At least one writer thinks so.
Rodriguez recently said,
“It was painful last year and it’s still painful now. But I still have to be honest and say that I’m glad I did it. That’s nothing against West Virginia or anyone there, …read more
