Phillip Fulmer is the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. He also has a birthday coming up on Labor Day. Happy Birthday from all of us at Dejuiced!

This will be his 16th year as head coach where he has a record of 147-45 and an SEC record of 87-27. He coached the Volunteers to the first ever BCS National Championship after the 1998 season. He’s had some good years after that and some bad (remember 2005? No? Ranked 3rd in the preseason and finished 5-6. Your welcome for catching you up.) and last year the Volunteers went 10-4 with a win against Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl. This year the Coaches and AP polls have them #18 at the start of the season and they take another trip to California this year but this time go up against the UCLA Bruins.

But outside of the goodness above, he has been 14-12 against the SEC in recent years and has been 5-11 against Florida. Some fans are still not over the 2005 year (I understand. Buckeyes went 6-6 in 1999. But I got over that when Cooper was fired). If another year like that happened, what will Knoxville do?

With Football season right around the corner, we here at Dejuiced! have decided to take a look at the coaches in the NFL and college football to see how well the fans approve of them. Today we look at Mike Gundy.

Before we start looking at Coach Gundy, I’ll get it out of the way. “He’s a man!” OK – I’m done. However, that was one of the all-time classic press conferences in college football. It was one that he would rather rip the media than talk about his team’s win over Texas Tech. But press conferences like that don’t help you keep your job. Sure, it earns you a little respect and a LOT of face time on TV and the Internet, but doesn’t keep you on the sideline.

Gundy is 18-19 in his three seasons in Stillwater as the head coach. He’s led the Cowboys to back-to-back bowl game wins after posting a 4-7 mark in his first season. Yet, now is the time for him to prove that he can take OSU to that next level.

Gundy has one of the most exciting quarterbacks to watch in college football, in Zac Robinson. And the Cowboys have a pretty soft non-conference schedule in 2008, which includes Missouri State, Houston, Troy and the season opener at Washington State. However, the Cowboys will play three of their toughest conference foes all on the road (Missouri, Texas and Texas Tech). The Cowboys do catch a break in their conference schedule by hosting both Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Entering his fourth season, we should be seeing Gundy’s recruits making an impact and begin moving up in the Big 12 standings. So, you tell us. Do you approve of Gundy as the head coach of Oklahoma State?

Dear Michigan State University,

Michael Hart may consider you the University of Michigan’s little brother. I am going to have to disagree with him. I have a little brother. I like my little brother. You’re not our little brother. You’re probably some sort of relative. Perhaps you’re a cousin who we see at Thanksgiving but are not really that close with? That’s still not right, but let’s be clear on this one thing: little brother you are not. This needn’t be a bad thing.

We may not like you, but the University of Michigan doesn’t dislike you, per se. (We do find you incredibly annoying at times, but we don’t hate you. Hate is such a strong word.) What we do have is an intense indifference towards you. I cannot describe how much you do not matter to us. There are many different colleges that are also in the state. There’s Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Western Michigan etc. We don’t consider them rivals either, but they don’t really get that offended by it. We all get along, you want in? Here’s how:

All you need to do is stop talking so much before games. (See: Dantonio’s “moment of silence.“) That usually backfires on you. But if you must, don’t be so upset when Michigan responds in kind. (See: Dantonio after Michigan’s moment of silence.) If you talk smack, then you lose, it comes back two-fold. That’s just how trash-talking works. Also, you guys have to come to terms that you’re not our rival. We can still be your rival if you want, but I mean, we can only have so many rivals. If we let everybody be our rival, the term would lose all meaning. You’re just one of those green and white colleges in the state, and that’s really not so bad, is it? I don’t think so, why do you?

Sincerely,

Dejuiced

Oh-ohhhhhhhhhhh!

- BC lost to unranked Florida State. I swear, if Florida State ever had a half-way competent quarterback, they’d be a national championship contender. Seriously, they might just have to go after guys who used to be minor-league baseball players or are going to be NBA players. Any actual quarterbacks they’ve recruited have been just plain bad. I really have no way to explain it.

- Speaking of Florida State, Janikowski knocked a 64 yard field goal attempt off the upright. Halfway up the upright. Say what you will about the GHB ingesting kicker, but he can kick the ball really, really hard. He’s just not very accurate.

- Sparty Spartied as only Sparty could. Classic.

- Nebraska got karma’d, and karma’d hard, for running up all those scores back in the day. Kansas put up 76 on them. There’s a Kansas-Nebraska Act joke in here somewhere, but I’m just not that great at antebellum humor.

- Oregon and LSU are essentially tied for best-team-that-isn’t-Ohio-State-but-is-probably-better-than-Ohio State position in the BCS.

- Navy baby, Navy. The United States Effing Naval Academy. And this is actually kind of a down year for Navy. Excellent work, Middies. You have a real good chance to win a bunch more, because big Chuckwagon’s contract is nowhere near up.

And so, a crowd of about 100,000 attempted to storm Schembechler Hall to forcibly remove Lloyd Carr from his position atop Michigan. The crowd was especially raucous for a Michigan group. It has been said that the noise traveled a full block down State Street to Yost Ice Arena. The crowd yelled “Off with his head coaching position!” and burned various jowly effigies. Their attempt to storm Schembechler Hall proved ultimately fruitless. The high walls surrounding the practice field were not scaled. The masses eventually returned to their homes to watch their 1997 highlight tapes and come to terms with the knowledge that — no matter the on-field performance — Michigan was so set in its ways that it was incapable of change.

Coach Carr expressed surprise that he was questioned at all, “Jim Harbaugh must be behind this.”
