Acer Passes Dell, Becomes #2 PC Maker

Taiwan-based Acer Inc has become the second-largest PC maker in the world, replacing Dell Inc in the third quarter and sending the former runner-up to third place. The development comes after a surprisingly strong quarter for Acer, which posted unexpectedly high sales figures that may signal that demand is starting to recover in the computer industry.

Few industries are thriving as a result of this economic recession as most of the world’s businesses attempt to deal with the repercussions of the crisis and brace for the future. The personal computer industry has been especially hard hit, but a new report about hardware maker Intel may signal a reversal of fortune for the struggling PC companies.

Hewlett Packard Trims Jobs to Save Money

In the face of the deepening economic recession, Hewlett Packard has decided to cut about 2% of its jobs, which amounts to 6,400 employees. These steps will be taken in order to alleviate the aftermath of a drop in profits, which fell 17 percent to $1.7 billion.
Hewlett Packard has expressed its pessimism over the state of the market in other ways as well, increasing its predicted drop in sales from 2-5 percent to 4-5 percent. The company predicts that sales of personal computers will be especially hard hit.

Hewlett-Packard Plans More Layoffs

Hewlett-Packard, a giant in the computer industry, is planning to layoff nearly 6,500 employees. Prior to this round of layoffs, Hewlett-Packard reportedly had more than 320,000 employees around the world. These layoffs will take place over the upcoming year.
Drops in both second quarter profits and second quarter sales are the reasons why Hewlett-Packard is conducting this latest round of layoffs. The company had a quarterly profit of $1.7 billion, which was down by more than 15%. Hewlett-Packard’s sales were down 3% to around $27.5 billion.
