The economy has been down for quite sometime and computer heavyweights like Intel have closed offshore shops this year in various places worldwide.

It seems that the industry is seeing some positive signs and are predicting a strong finish in 2009. The demand for microprocessors have increased and Intel has changed it’s third quarter forecasft from $ 8.1 billion dollars to $ 9.2 billion dollars. Other heavyweights like HP and Dell has also increased they forecast saying that third quarter would have a spurt in computer sales. I am not sure if Windows 7 has anything to do with this but it is definitely nice to know that these companies would not cut jobs going into the holiday season.

Dell has reported last week they experienced 23 percent drop in profits for the second quarter but this is still better than the analysts estimates. Michael Dell, CEO of Dell is confident that the second half of this year would be stronger than the first half. HP on the other hand has the same fate as that of Dell where their profits have dropped 19 percent for the first half but they feel they can get back to the game in the second half.

The economic stimulus package in China is expected to boost the PC industry and could be the spark to the economic recovery in the U.S.

I think this should be an exciting finish for the tech industry and these hardware vendors are making up for the lost profit in the first half, Microsoft is redeeming themselves via Windows 7, and both the software and hardware companies are relying in each other to boost their respective sales.

I had a request asked of me the other day that confused me for a bit. Someone wanted me to email directions to someone else. Two thoughts came to my mind, the first of which was trying to determine at what point I was going to get around to doing that simple, little task. The second thought was why in the world did I need to be the one to complete the simple little task?

We’ve all heard the analogy of giving a man a fish or teaching him to fish. The same holds true for technology. I can keep doing something for you, or I can teach you how to do it. The great thing is that sometimes the task is really so simple I don’t even need to teach you. You just need to do it yourself a couple of times and you’ll figure it out.

If you need directions somewhere, go visit Google Maps (http://local.google.com) which is my personal preference and put your address in. Then you can click on the little link that says get directions and put your other address in. Done! Print it out, email the directions, embed the map into your website or blog.

Need a phone number? Don’t call me and ask me what it is. Use the Internet and you can find just about anything you want.

Now, if you’ll excuse me I have to call my dad and remind him how to move files from his 3.5" disk over to a CD-ROM.

I had a good conversation recently with someone and we were talking about a variety of things, but one of the general thoughts was that it’s interesting what we don’t think about in our areas of strengths. For instance, many people look at me as a the “computer geek” because of what I know about computers.

I on the other hand think about my computer skills and see all the other things I wish I knew how to do or just knew more about. More than general networking stuff? I think I’m clueless. Hard-core programming, LOADS of information to still digest and learn.

However, in my “real” job, I’m regularly reminded how much general computer knowledge isn’t out there. In helping support the applications and websites I develop during the day, I come into contact with a number of computer users that it’s far from second nature on what to do.

It’s for that reason that I think I’m going to do some short and quick, general knowledge posts about computers right here. If you’re like me and serve as the tech-support guy for people (particularly friends and family) then hopefully you’ll be able to direct some people to these posts for a quick tip on how to use their computer more efficiently, or just at a little bit higher level than they have in the past.

If you’re not the “computer geek” and have questions on how to do stuff and you’d like me to tackle them and give you a quick post on what to do, feel free to leave me a comment and let me know what you’d like me to try and help you with here in the future.

I look forward to hopefully hearing from a variety of people on this one.

He says that when the user starts his computer and hears some mechanical sound, make sure you turn if off because it could be your hard disk destroying data. In case there is no sound, it is likely that the hard drive is good and the monitor is the only one affected.

He says that when the user starts his computer and hears some mechanical sound, make sure you turn if off because it could be your hard disk destroying data. In case there is no sound, it is likely that the hard drive is good and the monitor is the only one affected. If you don’t see anything on the screen, try plugging the laptop to any monitor and see if it works.

This should work for the time being especially when you haven’t budgeted for such an accident. The most logical thing to do is call your manufacturer’s support and inquire for a replacement. In most cases, the author says that the cost of changing your laptop screen is more expensive than buying a new laptop. In his case, his Lenovo X60 should cost him around $435 dollars. Wow, that is expensive.

Anyway, I think that if you are buying an expensive laptop like the Lenovo tablet, you better invest in an insurance policy probably from Best Buy to cover your expenses. The extra few hundred dollars should make sense when your laptop cost 2,000 dollars and up. Also, try looking for spare parts and used parts from Ebay and have a professional technician do the labor of changing your laptop. I don’t think you should buy a brand new laptop screen since your entire notebook parts are all second hand items already.

Go ahead and read the article here.

The discussion wasn’t so much around what video is available on the Internet, but more on the devices available to help you ditch the cable box for something else.

Of course you can access the Internet from your laptop and then stream video to your TV using a variety of options, but I found out this weekend that there’s a potential option for using the Nintendo Wii to serve as your Internet video portal in your living room.

There’s an Internet channel that you can download on the Nintendo Wii that allows you to access websites through the Nintendo Wii . Could you then use that channel to access your favorite video programming and display it on your living room TV? I haven’t tried this yet, the channel is $5 for unlimited use I believe.

This is what the Nintendo Wii website says about the Internet Channel:

The Internet Channel will change the way you surf the net forever. No more hunching over your computer. Just download the Opera browser for 500 Wii Points and within minutes, you’ll be a professional sofa surfer, pointing-and-clicking your way around the web with your Wii Remote. Opera supports Adobe Flash and JavaScript so you can even watch most movies on your favorite video sites!

If you’ve used this method to watch Internet TV on your own TV through the Nintendo Wii , please let me know. I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments.
