Americans Watched 12 Billion Videos in May

Are you watching more videos on MySpace or (God forbid) Hulu? I ask because the comScore numbers for May show Fox Interactive Media gaining a bit of market share in the US.

Oh well, there’s still some good news. Those same stats show that Americans watched 12 billion videos in May, up from 11.5 billion in March. Of course, GooTube still rules the roost with 34.8% market share.

I’d really like to see some global stats on this. MySpace is big mostly in the States, while Hulu is inaccessible outside the States. I’m willing to bet the Fox jump isn’t reflected globally.

At the rate online video is growing, is it even news anymore that Americans streamed 11.5 billion videos in March, up from 10 billion in February?

Is it even news anymore that the average YouTube viewer watched 50.4 videos on the site in March, up from 42.6 in February? Hell, I watched 670 YouTube videos in March.

Oh, right, it’s news to TV types. Viacom still thinks it can sue this YouTube thing away. TV is still growing in the state of denial.

Americans Watched 10 Billion Online Videos in February

The latest comScore numbers show a 3% gain in online video views in February at 10,089,048, despite that month being two days short. Note that comScore just counts streams and progressive downloads. Ten billion doesn’t even count torrents and direct downloads.

Other interesting tidbits:

* 72.8 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video.
* 80.4 million viewers watched 3.42 billion videos on YouTube.com (42.6 videos per viewer).
* 50.2 million viewers watched 539 million videos on MySpace.com (10.7 videos per viewer).
* The average online video duration was 2.7 minutes.
* The average online video viewer consumed 75 videos.

So the average YouTube US viewer watches 42.6 videos a month? I watch an average of 452.7 YouTube videos per month. Damn, I need to get out more.

One-Third of US Video Views on YouTube

YouTube’s market dominance continues. According to comScore, what Yahoo derides as “The YouTube World” includes a third of all US streaming video views.

Google Sites once again ranked as the top U.S. video property in January with nearly 3.4 billion videos viewed (34.3 percent share of videos), gaining 1.7 share points versus the previous month. YouTube.com accounted for more than 96 percent of all videos viewed at the property. Fox Interactive Media ranked second with 584 million (6 percent), followed by Yahoo! Sites with 315 million (3.2 percent) and Microsoft Sites with 199 million (2 percent).

Fox is second because of MySpaceTV. With the expansion of the YouTube API, expect YouTube’s lead to widen.
