OK, I’m waaay past the traditional age for cat-calling and guys whistling at me, but it happened to me on yesterday. I was at a lunchtime business meeting and was mingling with the guests shortly before the meeting started. I had to excuse myself to take a phone call, and when I returned, I had to walk through a huddle of business men who were just standing around talking. I very politely and discreetly said “excuse me” and just slid through the huddle. Well, I guess that wasn’t enough for them, as I heard them say (and rather loudly),

Calling Yourself “Bitch” Is NOT Empowerment

(www.bizchicksrule.com) — Can someone please explain this to me? I’m seeing it everywhere, but I don’t get it: Women who identify themselves, and people they purportedly like, as "bitches." You call women you don’t like, women who offend and anger you, "bitches." Why on Earth would you want to call yourself "bitch"? Why would you want to call someone you like and respect "bitch"?
From Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: bitch
Pronunciation: \ˈbich\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English bicche, from Old English bicce
Date: before 12th century
1: the female of the dog or some other carnivorous mammals
2 a: a lewd or immoral woman b: a malicious, spiteful, or …read more

Soap Box for a moment, please.
We take things for granted like having hot meals, toiletries, entertainment and the basic necessities of life. Having grown up in a military family and having been married to a military man for over twenty years, I can tell you the easy life it ain’t.
Our military men and women endure a lot for the sake of our country and the freedoms we enjoy. I’ve witnessed it and been involved in it firsthand, so I know from whence I speak. Although we all don’t agree and perhaps will never agree on the war(s), we …read more
In Response to the Comments on My Mean Girls Post…

(www.bizchicksrule.com) — The comments exploded on my mean girls post when I wasn’t looking! I tried to respond in the comments box, but it got so ridiculously long that it made more sense as its own post. So, here goes.
I’m going to steal from a comment I just left on Ry’s post "Why I Fear Women and Love Mythical Hobbits":
Whether Heather [Armstrong] is in actuality a mean girl is in my opinion immaterial to this discussion because she’s not the one talking smack on the blogs and making herself look like a vitriolic shrew — and THAT is what I …read more
Apparently Mean Girls Just Don’t Grow Out of It

(www.bizchicksrule.com) — The thing about mean girls is that, unless someone smacks them down — hard — along the way, they grow from being mean girls to being mean women. And sometimes, girls who started out nice are so tormented by mean girls that they turn mean as they get older. And then, we all get to work with them. Good times.
This weekend at BlogHer, there was some drama during the closing keynote. I don’t know any of the people involved personally and I couldn’t tell you anyone’s intentions and I’m not going to try. But here’s what happened in …read more

My parents raised me to believe that there was nothing I couldn’t do if I really wanted to. My father believed that women were smarter than men and I was the smartest. With his encouragement I started a boutique publicity agency. Today I own Miriam Silverberg Associates, a small publicity firm specializing in restaurants, fashion and anything that appeals to a woman’s comfort, vanity and convenience. I’ve been in business for well over 20 years.
Here’s what I’ve discovered Most men don’t think women are as smart as men. They won’t treat a woman the same as they treat …read more
Fun Friday (a little early): Gas Prices Are Still Rising, and It’s Time for Commuters to Revolt
May 22, 2008 by Kristen King

I’m doing this week’s Fun Friday post a little early because I filled up my gas tank this afternoon on the way home from taking this little guy to the vet for the second time in one week with a mysterious gaping wound on his back, and it was $62.16 at the pump. At first I thought I was seeing things. Then I thought I was going to throw up. That’s the most it’s been yet, and we’re only paying $3.79 a gallon near my house. (Only? Ha!)
But the best part, the thing that really made me swoon, is that …read more
Brilliant Business Move or Biggest Mistake of Her Life? Miley Cyrus and Her Semi-Nude Vanity Fair Photo

She’s and actress and a singer. She’s the idol of millions of little girls around the world as Hannah Montana. She’s worth millions. And she’s ubercontroversial right now thanks to a mostly naked photo in Vanity Fair. Yes, I’m talking about Miley Cyrus.
Parents are in an uproar about the scandalous photo of the underage Disney star, but VF says everything was on the up and up:
Me, well I hate to say, "I told you so!" but I stand by what I said in February in my Lively Women post "Does Miley Cyrus Have Histrionic Personality Disorder, or Is She Just …read more
Hard-Working Black Women: No New News Here

It’s true. Black women have for decades been the matriarchal backbone of the family, continually providing support. Through her tenacity and diligence, many famed Black leaders have excelled who have come from some single-parent, female-led, Black (or other ethnicity) homes. What the Black society is slowly starting to realize is just how important the Black woman’s role is, and has been, in the home.
