Dedication of the month : July 2008 : Neil Harvey

Yeah, you saw that right. From this post on, every month six and out would dedicate the month to some cricketer who I feel strongly about. Throughout the month, I would garner facts and trivia about the person. Should be fun.

Asif Karim is the man we were talking about in Cricket Trivia 3
*Played three World Cups: 1996, 1999, and 2003; captained Kenya in 1999.
*Played another sport: Captained Kenya’s Davis Cup team. Woah, he had talent!
* Renaissance Man of Kenya Cricket: Played Kenya’s first 25 ODI’s and was their most popular player for a while.
(I mentioned in the comments he had an India connection. Well, he’s of Indian origin. So that’s the connection.)
Surprise fact: Kenya lost their match against Australia in the 2003 World …read more

Cricket Trivia 3: Hints

I did it. I outsmarted Google this time. None of the folks are getting the right answer!
But here’s to your help.
So far the following responses have come up.
1. Viv Richards: Close, but not quite it. Had an Indian girlfriend, but he played four World Cups. Our trivia guy played just three.
2. Dave Houghton: Uh, no. I heard this name for the first time!
3. Rick Charlworth: Same as no. 2
4. Hansie Cronje: This is again close, but I’m afraid, the answer is no.
Our guy is from Hansie Cronje’s continent and the India connection is that he …read more

He’s a former hero (of sorts) of ours.
So here’s *blip* described in quick bullet points.
*Played three World Cups. Even captained his team in one. (Of course, we won’t name the years)
*Played another sport for his country. (What sport? Um, no. That would make it too easy)
*He’s often considered the renaissance man of his home country’s cricket.
Jonty Rhodes played another sport for his country as well, by the way. Of course, this is in no way related to this trivia. And it shouldn’t really help you.
So, dahlin’ readers, whose name did we, ahem, blip out?

Sourav Tiwary, a player from Under-19 Cricket World Cup is the correct answer to Cricket Trivia 2. Looks a bit like Mahendra Singh Dhoni. No surprise though: he hails from Jharkhand, Dhoni’s state. In fact, he’s being hailed as Dhoni’s lookalike.
The clue lied in his resemblance to Dhoni, something we hinted in “faking the smile”; we emphasized million in million-dollar smile owing to all the millions Dhoni is getting.
Congratulations to Baseer and Kishore for the correct responses!

We’re back with another weekly trivia.
Identify this player:

Looks familiar, doesn’t he? Look around yourself; you know who he is.
Answers on Sunday.
Hint: He’s got a million-dollar smile. Or maybe, he’s just trying to fake a million-dollar smile.
ETA: Sorry, but we’d to remove the image for technical reasons.

Neil Johnson is the correct answer to the last trivia question.
With a broad space between his incisors, he makes for a good caricature model, but this man had real gift and emerged a hero for Zimbabwe in the 1999 Cricket World Cup. Bagged three player-of-the-match and was pivotal in getting zimbabwe into the Super Six where they beat South Afica.
This Zimbabwean team had also defeated India in the league matches. Henry Olanga made some news with his singing skills during the same tournament.

This was by far my most favorite World Cup. I didn’t …read more

I might not have been a real great in that sense,
But I did help my country get into a World Cup Super Six,
And surprise the biggies
What’s more, I bagged three Man-of-the-Match awards at the same World Cup,
I knew I could do more,
The gifted all-rounder I was,
But I wasn’t being paid much,
So I just called it quits…
Now if you recognized me,
That should make me content for life,
So..who am I?

D: Who is he? Tell us and show your cricketing genius. Look for the correct response in a few days.

We had some fun here amidst the umpiring row. I had a hunch this would be rather controversial so kept mum on it, but now I feel there’s nothing wrong or particularly racist about it, as some had suggested.
That is a lookalike of, hold your breath, Shantakumaran Sreesanth. Now, how many had got it right?
