Bryan Clay Wins Gold in the Decathlon

Bryan Clay of the United States won the Olympic decathlon on Friday and earning him the title of the “World’s Greatest Athlete.” Clay is the first American to win the event since Dan O’Brien won the Gold in 1996.
Clay, the 2004 Silver Medalist, led the event from “wire to wire,” earning so many points that he only had to jog around the track for the 1500m, the last event.

It was a crazy day at the Bird’s Nest on Thursday. Both the United States mens and womens 4×100m relay teams dropped their batons in the qualifying heats and were disqualified from the events. In addition, there were also a lot a positive things happening at the “Nest.” Here are the highlights:
Andrey Moiseev of Russia won the Gold Medal in the men’s modern pentathlon competition. That’s the five-event content, which includes epee fencing, pistol shooting, a 200m freestyle swim, show jumping, and a 3km cross-country run. The event was added to the Olympics in 1912. Another Shooting Gold for the Czech Republic

David Kostelecky won the second shooting Gold Medal in as many days for the Czech Republic, with his first place finish in the men’s trap shooting event. He hit a perfect 25 targets in the final round. Earning the Silver Medal was Giovanni Pellielo of Italy and the Bronze Medal went to Aleksey Alipov of Russia.
Kostelecky’s countryman, Katerina Emmons won a Gold Medal on Saturday, the first of the Beijing Olympic Games, in the women’s 10m air rifle event.
US Women’s Basketball Team Off to Winning Start

The US women’s basketball team got off to a strong start on Saturday by defeating the Czech team 97 to 57. Diana Taursi led the scoring with 17 point, followed by Sylvia Fowles with 16 points. Eva Viteckova was the high-scorer for the Czech team with 12 points.
Among the spectators were US President Bush and his wife and daughter as well as members of the US men’s basketball team.
The US women’s team is seeking their fourth consecutive Gold Medal. They face China, who defeated Spain in their first game 67-64, on August 11.

Czech Republic Snags First Beijing Gold Medal

The first Gold Medal of the Beijing Olympic Games went to the Czech Republic’s Katerina Emmons in the 10m air rifile event. She finished with a score of 503.5, a new Olympic record. Silver went to Lyubov Galkina of Russia and the Bronze was awarded to Snjezanan Pejcic of Croatia. IOC President, Jacques Rogge was on head to present these first medals of the Games.
Du Li of China, the defending Gold Medalist finished fifth.
Emmons met her future husband, fellow Olympic shooter Matt Emmons, at the Athens Games. Perhaps the pair will both be bringing home Gold?

Sweden, Hockey’s Finest

In Ice Hockey, I heard that Sweden is the country to watch out for in the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
They are the first country to win both the Olympic gold and the World title in the same year. They beat Finland in the last Winter Olympics in Torino and beat the defending champion, Czech Republic in the Hockey World Championships.

Well, I’m talking about the Draw for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
It’s a list of the qualified countries divided into groups which will play during the finals group stage that can somehow be translated to a “how-to-get-rid-of-World-Cup-wannabes” process.
There is a mixture of opinions and emotions about the draw. I reckon particularly in Australia since it’s their first time to qualify for the World Cup in years only to get Brazil in the draw or England who got Sweden, a team they haven’t beaten in 37 years. Czech Republic and the Olympics

In 2003, Prague Mayor Pavel Bem told International Olympic Committee members that his city would put forth its candidacy for a future summer Olympiad. Despite a wave of criticism, the city plans to submit its application in July 2007 to host either the 2016 or the 2020 summer games.
