That’s what they said

Did you miss our post-selection interviews of the NCAA committee chairs? They answered our questions and yours, including about the men’s bracket of death, about why Ithaca’s women didn’t get in, or the Buena Vista men, or the St. Mary’s (Md.) men. Listen to the archive.

So yes, there’s a bracket of death. And the Final Four in Salem could be a blowout.

But while it seems like that could happen about half of the time when we first see a bracket, only once or twice has it actually turned out that way. Who thought Catholic could win in 2001 or Virginia Wesleyan in 2006?

So while the top seven men’s teams are all in one quadrant of the bracket, we can’t assume that the national champion will come from it. The NCAA Tournament men’s bracket was announced this morning, with 60 teams vying for a chance to hoist Walnut and Bronze on March 21 in Salem, Va.

If you’re a top-ranked men’s team, you may well be in the lower left-hand bracket. That’s where the top seven teams from last week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 all reside, with No. 8 Ithaca the highest-ranked team in the lower right-hand bracket and No. 10 Richard Stockton in the upper right-hand bracket.

Baruch and Franklin and Marshall got into the men’s field, where we had projected St. Mary’s (Md.) and Buena Vista. St. Mary’s lost to Baruch head-to-head in a non-region game early in the season, while Buena Vista had no games against regionally ranked opponents all season.

The field of 63 teams who will compete for the 2009 Division III women’s basketball championship has been announced with Cortland State and Mississippi College as the surprise Pool C picks. They take the place of Ithaca and Texas-Dallas in our projections. Add another chapter to the Cortaca rivalry as the Red Dragons head to the big dance and the Bombers do not, despite Ithaca beating Cortland head-to-head in November. The Choctaws and Comets split their season series and then both lost in the first round of the ASC tournament.

George Fox (27-0) gets the lone first round bye and then will host the winner of Chapman and Occidental in what has become a traditional Wednesday west coast tournament opener. Fellow undefeated Illinois Wesleyan stays home to host Ohio Wesleyan with UW-Eau Claire and DePauw traveling to the Shirk Center.

Looking for interesting matchups? How about top-sixteen showdown between Simpson and UW-Whitewater at St. Benedict in the first round? Or a regional featuring two schools with more than one title — Washington U. and Capital — along with defending champion Howard Payne? Or Christopher Newport’s super sophomore Chelsie Schweers heading to York (Pa.) where the Spartans make their tourney debut?

The top 10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy were announced today by members of the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. The club is responsible for the initial review of annual nominations and narrowed the pool to 10 men and 10 women finalists.

The men’s finalists: Jimmy Bartolotta, MIT; Jose Guitian, Lasell; Rashawn Johnson, Wesley; Tim Madson, Bethel; Scott Morton, Geneseo State; John Noonan, Ursinus; Joel Patch, Susquehanna; Kent Raymond, Wheaton (Ill.); Jeff Skemp, UW-Platteville; Tony Thrasher, Hamline.

The Jostens Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., to honor the most outstanding men’s and women’s Division III basketball players of the year. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The trophy models the Rotary motto of “Service above Self” by recognizing those who truly fit the ideal of the well-rounded Division III student-athlete. This year’s class marks the 12th year the award has been presented.

The list will be forwarded to the 35-person national selection committee, which will complete the selection process by picking the two Jostens Trophy winners.

Last year a surprise Sweet 16 team, this year St. Mary’s (Md.) is 21-4 and hoping to avoid all bubble references.

A week for the strong

A week from now we’ll know who all 123 NCAA Tournament teams are and where they’ll be playing. But before then, we’ve got a lot of business to attend to. Here’s what’s coming in this most crucial week of the Division III basketball regular season, with all but two tournament bids still up for grabs.

If you’re not already following D3hoops on Twitter, you should be. That may be your quickest source for conference tournament upsets that change the face of the NCAA Tournament.

Wednesday: The NCAA releases the final regional rankings that you and I are allowed to see, through games of Sunday.

Thursday: Hoopsville takes a look at the first wave of conference upsets — you know there will be one — and talks to coaches of teams on the bubble and still in control of their own destiny.

Friday: The CUNYAC crowns its automatic qualifiers as do the NJAC men, as we start handing out tournament bids in earnest. The ASC and SCAC begin their three-day, eight-team events, while many other conferences play their semifinals.

Saturday: Automatic bids fly left and right. We’ll have live broadcasts from conference title games (CCIW and MIAC for starters), plus links to any others we can find, audio or video.

Sunday, March 1: Bright and early in the morning we’ll have our first NCAA Tournament bracket projection, based on the games already played. That afternoon the final handful of bids will be awarded, including the NESCAC, SCAC, ASC, NEWMAC and others. We’ll update our bracket projections, if necessary. That evening, Hoopsville airs after all the dust has settled, and we’ll also find out what teams made the women’s NCAA Tournament, scheduled for release around 10 p.m. ET.
And you’ll hear many cliches about madness, I’m sure.

Monday, March 2: The bracket announcements, which will be streamed on live video by the NCAA and simulcast on Hoopsville, are scheduled for 10 a.m. ET (men) and noon ET (women). After each announcement we’ll talk to teams affected as well as decision-makers. We’ll also open our NCAA Tournament Pick ‘em contests on Monday.

Wartburg ends BVU streak
Buena Vista had won 11 consecutive games, five of those by four points or less or in overtime. But the No. 6 Beavers’ luck ran out when they ran into Wartburg on Monday night.

Wartburg shot 13-for-24 from three-point range and handled Buena Vista in giving the Beavers their first conference loss, 80-66. Cole Danielson hit seven of them in scoring a game-high 25 points, while Mitch Eslick added three three-pointers in the win.

“Eslick got it going tonight,” said Wartburg coach Dick Peth. “He had been waiting a long time to shoot like this. Cole had good looks on the perimeter, too. Our point guards did a great job of getting them the ball which helped lead to those chances.” Monday’s men’s scores.

Elsewhere on Monday, No. 2 St. Thomas played its fifth game in 13 days and edged Hamline 64-59 behind 15 points from junior guard Joe Scott. No. 20 Texas-Dallas lost a home game for the first time this season, falling to University of the Ozarks 68-66. No. 23 William Paterson rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to beat Baruch 70-65. Willamette edged Lewis and Clark 75-73 in the completion of Saturday’s suspended game. Tyler Sanborn recorded his fifth consecutive double-double as Guilford beat Hampden-Sydney 69-51 to remain a half-game behind Randolph-Macon in the ODAC standings.
