LeBron James chipped in with 25 points, 12 assists and five rebounds. Delonte West had 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Anderson Varejao had 15 points and nine rebounds while making all seven of his field goal attempts.

Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs with 27 points and nine rebounds. Jason Terry had 25 points off the bench. Defense was the problem for Dallas, as Cleveland scored 68 points in the first half.

Following the game, both teams had a record of 12-5.

For those that don’t remember the 2007 postseason, that was the one that featured the eighth seeded Warriors defeating the top seeded Mavs. That series was perhaps the most exciting series I’ve ever watched, although neither team has really been the same since.

The Golden State Warriors once had the blueprint for developing a solid team and a playoff contender. They were well on their way when they shocked the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 2007 NBA Playoffs by sending them home.

It was the upset of the decade, as the Mavericks had the best winning record in the league that year.

Since then however, the Warriors have failed to make the playoffs for the past two seasons. Certain questionable trades were made, with the most recent sending Stephen Jackson and Acie Law to Charlotte.

Now there’s a rumor circulating that Monta Ellis is next in line of disgruntled players

Could a trade be coming for Golden State's Monta Ellis?

Ellis has not verbally expressed his desire to be traded, but his agent Jeff Fried has left the door wide open. Fried recently told the San Francisco Chronicle, “I don’t have any trades working right now, but who is to say what might happen down the road?”

Golden State managed to pickup sharpshooter Stephen Curry in the 2009 NBA Draft. But you have to wonder how a young player will be able to grow and develop on a team that lacks continuity.

While LeBron has recently been sick, that wasn’t the reason why he missed the game. Cleveland’s top three stars sat out due to this game being a back-to-back affair.

This season, the Mavs face a pivotal campaign. They’ve made a number of big moves — namely the trade for Shawn Marion — and they need to see results early. If not, Mark Cuban and the rest of the Mavs management might blow it up.

Tim Thomas, who was signed by the Dallas Mavericks in the offseason, injured his knee while getting ready for the NBA season. He’s scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery. A timetable will be set following the surgical procedure.

The 32-year-old was signed by the Mavericks to add perimeter marksmanship to the club. Last year, he shot 42.1% from three-point land in his 36 games with the New York Knicks. In 18 games he played with the Chicago Bulls, he shot 44.2% from beyond the three-point arc.

If Thomas misses a lot of training camp, he may find it difficult to carve out a niche in Dallas. At the forward positions, Thomas has to compete with a number of talented players including Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion, Josh Howard, Drew Gooden and James Singleton.

Thomas has also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks and Phildadelphia 76ers in his dozen seasons in the NBA.

Singleton began his NBA career with the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2005-06 season. He played a second year with the Clippers but was out of the league during the 2007-08 season.

While Singleton played well last year, it’s difficult figuring out where he’ll get minutes during the 2009-10 campaign. The Mavs have added Shawn Marion, Tim Thomas and Drew Gooden this season — three forwards that will battle for minutes with the 6-foot-8 Singleton.

Another move the Mavs made on Monday was to release Greg Buckner. Buckner was acquired in the trade that brought Marion to Dallas.

Stephen Jackson has long been a good player in the NBA. However, sometimes his actions can overshadow his play. Now the Golden State Warriors may have a giant distraction on their hands after Jackson announced that he wants to be traded.

Stephen Jackson has a message for the Warriors (Image: Zuma Press)

Jackson point out the four teams he wants to play with — the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks or the Houston Rockets. Other than the Warriors, Jackson has also played with the New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers in his NBA career.

Last year with the Warriors, Jackson had one of his better seasons. He averaged a career-high 20.7 points to go along with 6.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds — both also career-high marks. Jackson shot 41.4% from the field and 33.8% from beyond the three-point line.

While the Warriors could very well look to trade the 6-foot-8 swingman, Jackson’s contract is ugly and teams could be turned off by his off the court history. As the 2009-10 NBA begins, the Warriors could very well have an unhappy player on their team who is on record as saying he wants to be elsewhere.

While the Mavs technically have seven days to match the offersheet, insiders believe that there’s zero chance that Dallas will match. As a result, Hollins will play with the T’Wolves next season.

To begin his career, Hollins played for the Charlotte Bobcats. He was a second round pick in the 2006 NBA Draft and played with the Bobcats until getting traded to the Mavs in the middle of last season. In 27 games with the Mavs, the 7-footer out of UCLA averaged 2.9 points. 2.3 rebounds and 0.6 blocks in 9.6 minutes per game.

To go along with his ample height, Hollins is a very athletic player. He can run and jump about as well as any center in the league. What he lacks is skill and strength. His 230-pound frame still needs some muscle added to it.

With the T’Wolves, Hollins should fit in well. Minnesota needed a center to pair with Al Jefferson and Kevin Love — and Hollins is a center who could grow into a very valuable role.
