OK. I get it. I understand the need to shake up a roster now and then, especially if things aren’t clicking. But just becasue the Boston Celtics failed to make it back to the NBA Finals this season doesn’t mean they need to go crazy and dismantle the team.

The bottom line is that this team works. They have it all: Chemistry. Talent. Veteran talent. Young talent. Defensive prowess. Offensive spark.

What was missing in the playoffs was quite clear: Kevin Garnett. Yet Danny Ainge, the same genius GM that brought Ray Allen and Garnett to the team in the first place, wants to deal Rajon Rando and Allen to the highest bidder.

Why? Sure, Allen is going to be 34 but he can still shoot the lights out in any building and has at least one more good year left in him. And Rando has improved to become one of the top point guards in the league. Combine that with team chemistry and a healthy Garnett and you’ve got the makings of another championship team.

Trades should come on the outskirts, with the shuffling of role players and not on the inside where the core of the team is already in place.

I don’t get it. But maybe that’s why I’m not a GM. Maybe Ainge sees something that I don’t see. But I think that if Allen and Rondo get traded, we won’t see another NBA Championship in Boston any time soon.

The news regarding Ainge hit the news wires shortly after it was learned that superstar power forward Kevin Garnett may miss the entire playoffs due to a knee injury. Garnett was the star acquisition by Ainge last summer that propelled the Celtics to the 2007-08 NBA championship.

Even before Ainge brought a championship to Boston as a general manager, he was very popular in the city of Boston. As a player, he won two championship rings in the 1980s playing alongside Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale.

The Celtics begin their attempt at back-to-back titles when they take on the Chicago Bulls on Saturday. Without Garnett, the Celtics will have to rely on Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo to care the workload.

Apparently, Danny Ainge didn’t really understand why the Boston Celtics won the 2007-08 NBA championship. If he were watching closely, he would have seen a group of players with great chemistry who believed in each other — even when times were tough.
Instead of building on that chemistry, Ainge is blowing it up. According to reports, Ainge is set to sign both Stephon Marbury and Mikki Moore. Both Marbury and Moore became available after their previous teams bought them out.

And let’s set the record. Marbury and Moore weren’t bought out on a whim. The New York Knicks and the Sacramento Kings, respectively, were fed up with this duo. They saw a buyout as a better way to dispose of a problem player rather than letting their contract simply expire. That says a lot.

Ainge obviously isn’t listening. What happens the next time Kevin Garnett tries to rally the troops and Marbury and Moore don’t fall in line? What happens when Paul Pierce tries to lead by example and Marbury and Moore aren’t watching? I guess that’s when Ainge will learn why the 2008 championship Celtics were special.
