Dayton edged Auburn 60-59 in overtime in the Chicago Invitational Challenge at the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on Friday. The Flyers are underfeated at 5-0.

At least Auburn hit seven three-pointers. The Tigers went 7-for-31, but at least they hit seven three-pointers.

But I’m sure Auburn would trade those in for the win. The loss dropped the Tigers to 3-2.

Thursday January 24: #6 Washington State at Arizona – the Top 5 Cougars face a stiff road test at the McKale Center. Do not underestimate the Wildcats at home. #19 Dayton at #22 Xavier – the top 2 teams in the A-10 square off in what should be a fantastic game.

Saturday January 26: Georgia at #5 Tennessee – How will the Vols react after their upset loss to Kentucky? At 11-5 the Dawgs are no pushover, and Tennessee must be on upset alert. Connecticut at #8 Indiana – a great Big East-Big Ten matchup.

Sunday January 27: Michigan at #10 Michigan State - Wolverines vs. Spartans. Whatever the sport, you need to watch this matchup.

Games to watch this week – 1/23

For a team that is 11-1 and ranked in the top 10, things aren’t looking very pretty for the Pittsburgh Panthers. In fact, their dreams of a deep run into the NCAA tournament have turned into a medical nightmare.

The injury-depleted Panthers suffered another major setback on Saturday night when junior guard Levance Fields broke a bone in his left foot. Doctors indicated that Fields will require surgery that will keep him out of action for 8-12 weeks, which basically means the Panthers will be lucky to have Fields back by the time March Madness rolls around.

Combine Fields injury with Mike Cook’s season-ending knee injury and Austin Wallace’s fractured patella, Pitt has 9 healthy scholarship players left on the roster.

The effects of these injuries is starting to take its toll on the Panthers, who were drubbed 80-55 by Dayton on Saturday, and they could get worse as the Panthers gear up for the tough Big East conference schedule.

Everybody who had Pitt penciled in for a trip to the Final Four should get their Pink Pearl erasers out and remove Pitt from their brackets.

Alas, poor Pittsburgh, we hardly knew ye…
