The economy has been down for quite sometime and computer heavyweights like Intel have closed offshore shops this year in various places worldwide.

It has been an issue for more than two years already since netbooks have hit the market and when they first came out it was on the linux version. Microsoft quickly stepped up the pace and have made partnerships with vendors to make sure that Windows XP would be loaded in these netbooks. Furthermore they have extended the life of Windows XP specifically for netbooks.
After a few months, it was reported that return rates for Linux based netbooks was four or five times higher than normal Windows XP. At that time Microsoft was making a killing continuously announcing …read more

The latest edition of Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics reveals that the world’s biggest PC makers — Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and Lenovo — have failed to improve their low scores. All three maintain a penalty point for backtracking on their commitments to eliminate PVC plastic and brominated flame retardants from their products by the end of 2009.
In 14th place, HP is lagging far behind other PC brands, having postponed its 2007 commitment to phase out PVC and BFRs from its computer products from 2009 to 2011. Dell and Lenovo are still low on the list, though they do have PVC and …read more

Dell has been all about the green of late, with lots of initiatives to make their computers in the most ecologically friendly ways. Now comes word that Dell recently asked forward-thinking designer Jocko Chan to develop a new concept for them called LOOP. The idea is simple: an all-in-one computer that comes in a handful of easy-to-assemble, component-based parts, that you rent instead of buy. The components that become outdated are replaced through the rental system, and everything is recyclable, making the whole concept uber-green.
Plus, it’s pretty doggone nifty to look at, showing a soothing, tactile feel that’s unlike anything …read more

November Month in Retrospect
I started this month as the new damn PC guy and ended it by buying a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 in one of the Black Friday deals though I wish I had won a PC in a giveaway.
I had been opinionated about using push buttons and organizing program files, worried about the rising types of blog fraud and spam mail, conscious about the precautions to be taken in a cyber cafe and disposing e-waste responsibly, sad about the layoffs and the Mumbai attacks, and excited about the Ancient Rome 3D and the LIFE photo archive projects. I also began an ongoing …read more
I Bought a Dell Inspiron Mini 9
I told you about my recent interest in netbooks. I want to test if it sufficiently supports a writer’s lifestyle, which I’ve been embracing slowly. I had an eye on the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 in particular. Today, I ordered one at $434.
The best thing about Dell is the customizations available during purchase, and the upgradability and extensibility options later. The following are the initial features I went for: Ubuntu OS, 1GB DDR2, 16GB solid state drive, 1.1M pixel webcam, Obsidian black. Of course, the most important default feature is the Intel Atom Processor which is 100% lead free and …read more
