Without Lilly, the Cubs could find it difficult to hang in the playoff race. They are .5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central, however the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers are also less than three games back.

The Boston Red Sox placed the knuckleballer on the disabled list, however Wakefield apparently doesn’t believe this is a long-term injury.
“It’s a minor setback,” explained Wakefield, “that’s all.”

Earlier in the month, Wakefield was named to the All-Star team for the first time in his career — quite an accomplishment for a 42-year-old who has been in Major League Baseball since 1992.

On the season, Wakefield has a 4.31 ERA to go along with a record of 11-3. Prior to this injury, he was on pase to win the most games of his big league career.

With Wakefield heading to the DL, the Red Sox called up Clay Buchholz. The 24-year-old will make his second start of the season in Wakefield’s spot in the rotation. Buchholz’s other start saw him go 5.2 innings and give up only one earned run.

On the season, Ibanez is hitting .312 with 22 homers, 59 RBIs and 51 runs. At 37, he’s on pace to have the best season of his big league career.

Ibanez could even miss more than the 15-day minimum. According to Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., there’s a chance the Phillies opt to keep him out until he’s near 100%.

After Philadelphia won the 2008 World Series championship, many experts were surprised when they let Pat Burrell walk and signed Ibanez away from the Seattle Mariners. However, now those same experts feel foolish for second-guessing the move.

Ibanez made news recently when he got mad at a blogger from bringing up steroids rumors.
